Hey man. Back early 2022, I'd watched Dune 1 (which had 1.43:1 scenes) in Velocity IMAX and I distinctly remembered few scenes of the film stretched taller, using almost the entire screen. Velocity's aspect ratio is taller than 1.43:1 at 1.33:1. Velocity uses dual 2k Xenon projectors which help compensate for the higher aspect ratio (there were older posts here that mentioned Velocity's IMAX uses dual 2k Xenon projectors, which should help achieve that 1.43:1 size. This is also why I saw Dune 1 stretch as tall as it did). I could be wrong but it wouldn't hurt to try. Also if I'm right, I'm be so sad cause I usually watch movies at cinema alone and I can't find a partner to justify for that stupid couple seat which are also the best positioned seats there.

Also an update, a few days ago, news broke out that Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 will only be 2.39:1. Chilaka, I booked IMAX tickets already before hearing this news. Anyway, upon doing a bit of research and reading articles, IMDB's info can be edited by anyone, so previously, it mentioned 1.9:1 alsong with the usual 2.39:1. I assume this was written as speculation as there wasn't any concrete info about MI7's aspect ratio. However, the film heavily marketed to be an IMAX film so the expectation for tall height was promised. Anyway, pretty bumped out right now as I could have saved money opting for BIG DA instead. Maybe the MI7 vs Oppenheimer IMAX screening slots and having Oppenheimer won out in the end may have influenced this change, I'm not sure. Anyway ooof.

Now I'm rethinking to watch MI:7 on IMAX and saving up for Oppenheimer. Would you recommend the Atmos Maxx @IOI? It's not exactly much cheaper.... (RM29.50 vs RM35 for IMAX Laser) or should I just stick to IMAX?

I hear the Imax seats are better, plus the IOI City's Atmos Max hall is handicapped by the D-Box seats and I find the immediate front rows just bit too near. Heck, think might just settle for the newer "vanilla" 2D hall at IOI 2 East and hope the audio is decent enough.

Only go Maxx DA as a last resort for a Premium Large Format (PLF) screen hall and only during discounted hours (RM18 usually). If you can't go during discounted hours, then just spend the extra for IMAX at IOI. If you want better quality than Maxx but cheaper than IMAX, check out the BIG DA halls in KL (biggest screen to smallest: Starling, MyTown then Tropicana Gardens). They are further from Putrajaya but definitely better value for visual quality while having equally great audio set-ups. Maxx screen projectors are outdated as the image is blurry and looks low res. I watched D&D there a few months back and it was not a great visually. Re-watched the film at MyTown Big and the clarity was a big difference. Shame cause the speakers are THX certified and audio there is fantastic. Hope they refurbish the hall to Big but then again, the new wing/mall 2 will be opening a Big hall later this year.
thanks mate, due to time constraint I can only watch on the opening weekday and at IOI City. Funnily GSC does not apply the usual Wednesday discount to newer movies (all the DA MAXX & normal halls are normal price of RM29 & RM25 respectively on 12th June )

so yeah might lean to IMAX, and skip the concession snacks to keep it economical tongue.gif

Quick one, anyone been to GSC IOI City's IMAX recently? I recall someone mentioned of muffled audio from the middle of the screen side.

Plan to catch MI8 at IOI since it's closer but if there's potentially less than satisfactory audio, I may pivot to Velocity although that may entail a slightly longer drive.

Edit: it's ok, went for IOI GSC IMAX 😁

IMAX @ Aurum is RM70 for a single ticket. Zaf said it comes with popcorn and drinks? Is that true?

TGV charges RM35 for 2D IMAX and RM40 for 3D. With regards to adjustable seats that Zaf mentioned, they don't recline that much. If you have a decent office chair that reclines, the TGV seats only go half way. That's just right for me. Perhaps the issue has something to do with a person's height and the stadium seating at 1 Utama.

I would prefer that TGV charges me RM35 if I can reuse my 3D glasses. But at least I have the option not to buy popcorn and drinks when I don't want to.

Yes at least currently, the RM70 includes food and drinks. I'm not even sure if it's popcorn or actually hot meal, but probably the former.

Did a quick test purchase, so apart from 3 Aurum Golden popcorn options, you can also opt for takoyaki ball or crispy chicken strips.. drinks are standard fare.
