Best cinema halls in Malaysia, using Top Gun: Maverick as reference for picture & sound.

1) IMAX Sunway Velocity - Largest IMAX screen in Malaysia.
2) IMAX Midvalley Southkey, JB - Best IMAX screen in Johor + best overall IMAX sound setup in Malaysia.
3) 4DX - GSC OneUtama, PJ - In terms of 4DX motion system setup. Picture & Sound Quality loses out to IMAX.
4) 4DX - GSC Midvalley Southkey, JB - If you want to catch 4DX in Johor. Picture & Sound Quality loses out to IMAX.
5) ScreenX - Not worth the money if you're watching the movie for the 1st time. Better to watch in IMAX instead.

6) Everything else, still loses out to IMAX. I would aim for IMAX first, 4DX second in terms of catching any blockbuster movies in Malaysia.

Haha using top gun as i the motion guy i take 4DX then imax second

The motion will be even better if it had IMAX level sound - because the IMAX cinemas I went to, the sound was so loud that the chair and floor was vibrating. Really heart-pounding effects.
4DX sound levels is around 8-9/10 at most. But the motion effects, is really worth experiencing multiple times!

I was literally blown away, watching Top Gun in 4Dx. But agree the only downside is the sound quality not as good as IMAX

Yeah, Top Gun is one of the better 4DX movies out there. Last time Transformers was quite fun, because it felt you were on-board an Autobot / Decepticon during the scenes and being tossed around.

Just watched John Wick 4 in IMAX (Central i-City), movie is great and the sound dayum. Especially the first scene (the fist punching scene, I can feel the pain by just watching the scene + sound)

Let me guess. After the 3rd punch, you sit forward from the chair cause can feel the punches, right?

Hello, I'm planning to watch Transformers either on Onyx Or 4K Barco but I'm not sure which one have more image clarity, I have tried Onyx before but I'm not sure if 4K Barco projector is much better than Onyx or not.

Audio clarity is important as well and as I read, both hall have Dolby Atmos sound system right?

Onyx:  GSC Tropicana Gardens Mall.
4K Barco: GSC HLB Big mytown or GSC HLB Big Tropicana Gardens Mall.

IMAX. Always go IMAX. Especially the one with LASER projection.

Sadly due to transportation, reaching ioi city mall is expensive to go.

The other imax I consider is one utama and velocity mall but both of the hall is using 2K projector if I'm not mistaken which make make me worried to see "blury" image on the screen due to the sheer size of the screen.

Other consideration is also the cost of the ticket itself, Imax is kinda expensive for me.

Btw, thanks you for giving me suggestion. I will consider Imax in the future smile.gif

IMAX Differencehttps://www.imax.com/content/imax-difference

I wouldn't worry about IMAX 2K projectors. Overall, it's still better vs. other halls in Malaysia when it comes to both picture & sound quality.
Sadly, Transformers is not filmed using IMAX cameras / with expanded IMAX ratio, but it's still going to be good to watch in IMAX.

If you want to feel the IMAX difference for yourself, I would suggest watching Transformers, then comparing it later with MI / Oppenheimer.

I see, thank you for sharing the link, you make me less worried about the 2K projector.

Thank you for convincing me smile.gif

You're welcome. Plus, IMAX is the only cinema screen in Malaysia, where the Chief Quality Officer's email (based in US/Canada) is displayed at the end of every email.
He replies whenever you provide feedback. I once complained about dirty screen in GSC IMAX JB, and it was solved within 1-2 weeks.
When I complain about 4DX to GSC/4DX owners, no action taken.

Great review as usual from the MVP here!

Oppenheimer and Mission Impossible coming out next month!

As both are shot with IMAX camera, definitely going to IMAX theatres for these 2. Question is which one to go?
a) IMAX Laser at IOI City East (better picture quality but screen is smallest)
b) IMAX at Sunway Velocity (might be able to showcase the taller aspect ratio of IMAX better than the one in i-City, as shared by @Katharsis previously)
c) IMAX at Central i-City

Why not watch 3 times for both movies? You can't replicate the same setup at home.

LOL! Imagine watching the same movie 50+ times in the cinema (IMAX / 4DX / maybe Screen-X too...)
