I really wish we have IMAX Laser & Dolby Cinema soon in Malaysia.
At the moment IMAX or Atmos is my choice but still not good enough if compare to those two. sigh.....

Looks like MBO is upping the game by bringing in 4D. They also have a family friendly hall with a playground. Not sure if their screen in the Big Screen hall is bigger than GSC's Maxx though.
MBO Cinemas introduces Malaysia's first 4D motion seats

Hey guys, movie buffs, cinema lovers, etc, big news!

The new MBO Starling's big screen is super awesome. Its the best non-IMAX/normal hall in Malaysia, hands down. Pricing at RM21-22, it has super screen clarity, powerful bass, comfortable VIP seats with headrests, huge screen and good surround (Dolby Atmos). The only downfall is, the aspect ratio of films does not utilize the full screen. Quite a portion of the top and bottom part of the screen is blank! I hope MBO can rectify it by getting a different format reel for their big screen.

They also have MX4D, Kecil and Premier halls. Hoping for someone to review it. No time and money to check them out yet rclxs0.gif

Is the screen bigger than GSCmaxx at Times Square? I remember it was huge.
Watched Fast8 in the MX4D hall and it was kinda fun and something that you should try at least once. Besides the rumbling seats you get to smell burning tires,  see some smoke, flashing when gunshots are fired, feeling bullets narrowly miss your ear, and have a bit of water sprayed at you.
*
MBO claim its the biggest screen in Malaysia. I watched Fast8 in BigScreen. In my opinion, they were somewhat the same. GSC Maxx fails at many points. The projector used is somewhat old. The color isnt as vivid and bright as BigScreen and the sound quality lacks a bit. GSC Maxx doesn't have that boomy bass and super surround as BigScreen. Seats in BigScreen has better comfort and lots of legroom. Hoping to get more reviews on MBO BigScreen. My last movie on GSC Maxx was The Force Awakens. Will have a go there again.

Love your description on MX4D. I wanna go too drool.gif

There are a few GSCMaxx screens, can i know which one you referring to ?
The 'true' biggest GSCMaxx screen is located at Times Square as the hall previously build for full spec IMAX hall .
Now the largest IMAX hall if not mistaken is located at Sunway Velocity Mall but the seating  is screw up  mad.gif
All the middle seat is reserve for dining seat while other 'preferred' seat is located side way sad.gif

Me yet to try MBO Big Screen (which they claim one of the biggest screen in Malaysia)
MX4D is worth to try @ RM23 only smile.gif
*
Yes, they claim MBO Starling bigscreen is the biggest. Another reason to love this hall is cz the VIP seats has headrests, which is such a plus for tall people like me.

I went to the true GSC Maxx in BTS. Only the size of the screen is big and everything else is not up to par. Don't you find the seats to be too much for a row? You'll have to go through like 50 people if you're sitting at the end of the row to the washroom, with everyone staring at you! It's just a bummer for me.

Haven't try IMAX Sunway Velocity. Dining area? Is it the indulge seats or something? Must be a huge bummer to lose the best seats in a cinema, especially for IMAX sad.gif

I'm thinking of the best way possible to watch Dunkirk which I believe is IMAX 70mm. Where should I go for that? I usually just go to standard screen cinemas.
*
70mm IMAX is gonna be extinct soon. We had one in Malaysia BTS, our first IMAX which was closed down. The reason why it closed down is the same reason why 70mm IMAX is no longer an option. Why?

1. Not many movies are being shot in its true large format/aspect ratio
2. Too expensive (high cost of projection)
3. Thus less profit
4. Needs such a huge space to build the cinema hall (heavy renovation)

Therefore, IMAX is shifting to Digital IMAX screens, famously known as LieMAX. Smaller screens than 70mm but somewhat trying to give a same experience. But even the smaller IMAX screens are bigger than normal cinemas!!!

Have you guys experience the brand new Onyx Hall in GSC Mid Valley (Hall 11) using Samsung LED Screen instead of traditional projector ?
*
Hey, recently watched The Incredibles 2 in Onyx. Seating wise, they've added some cushion pads on top of existing leather seats. Audio was good enough, although the bass felt forced?

Picture, well, its a huge TV screen. Its like watching movie on VIVID mode. There is a reason why our TVs have cinema mode for picture, its because that's how the movie makers intended us to watch their movie.

Will come up with a proper review after trying a few more times. Appreciate if others could give in their opinions too...thanks icon_idea.gif

While I still wait for my second trip with Onyx, wanted to review our IMAX again. With MBO going for 4K projectors on their BigScreen, I think its time for TGV to upgrade from 2K to 4K laser IMAX projection. Just watched Mission Impossible Fallout at IMAX TGV 1 Utama. Sound is excellent as usual but the pic quality to my eyes getting worse laugh.gif Seating is not comfortable. Front row too near with leg. BigScreen is far more spacious!

Therefore hands down the best cinema hall in Klang Valley notworthy.gif MBO Starling Mall's BigScreen notworthy.gif

Somehow I feel that BigScreen is not immersive enough, perhaps due to not closed enough like IMAX screen.

Nevertheless, do you guys aware that GSC MID Valley and 1Utama already have Laser Projector?

haha true as well...that's why i always sit a couple of rows in front the middle row to create my own immersion. If only IMAX can go with 4K Lasers lust.gif

Sure, if price IS part of the discussion, nothing beats a dedicated Home Theatre - built from the ground up. But that would be an endless debate, no?

That's why I said borderline decent. I think the local cinemas are charged right, but there can be improvements. Example, do you know that the current GSC Maxx at MyTown has issues with the subs and the ceiling? The ceiling is rattling and it's been that way for over 3 months now - I watched Aquaman in Dec and Cap Marvel yesterday, rattling is STILL there ffs. Oh and the the top right sub (they have 5 subs, 4 on the ceiling) is busted but of course no one knows wtf I'm talking about when I bring it up. doh.gif
As for countries, check the list of Dolby Vision cinemas in the US and the UK. As far as commercial goes, they are the benchmark right now. I happen to travel to Houston Texas often enough (family in law there), so AMC @ Katy Mills or Willowbrook is where I usually go to. The best is apparently the Odeon at Leceister for now, but I've not had the chance to visit it yet.
*
Totally agree with you. Malaysian cinemas are way behind. 4 years ago when I was in India, the major cinema chains were playing movies on 4K projectors. Most of my trips overseas has shown me how far behind our cinemas are. That's why I hope forums like this gain attention of local exhibitors, expose audiences to such matters and promote healthy competition as well. Cheers tongue.gif

I did not notice on the MyTown MAXX hall issue when I was there on Feb. I'm always alert of sound distortions actually. Did you manage to raise the issue with the branch manager/technician? I suggest all movie goers to do so the next time you face such situations.

Cinema Hunting Report

One Cinemas Spectrum, Ampang

Its basically just decent. Not satisfied with audio quality though, the rest were borderline fine. A budget cinema option for Ampang folks. Free parking and good popcorn!

Amerin Cineplex, Seri Kembangan

Again no complains. Better surround system in comparison to One Cinemas. Popcorn was decent. Another budget option as well.

Hunting Soon: Bona Cinemas, Genting & TGV Central i-City, Shah Alam rclxm9.gif

MBO is at least taking the initiative to make better cinema halls, but still have some ways to go.

The rattling in MyTown Maxx hall can only be heard on the D-box row and the 1 row (D) below it.  As for the sub, I'm very aware of sub distortions. I did raise it with one of the technician yet, but of course they don't understand the issue. They actually don't even understand what a sub bottoming out sounds like, so yeah.  mega_shok.gif

Guys, is TGV Indulge better or GSC Gold Class?

Planning to catch Avengers Endgame in either one, any recommendations?

(From the photos online - their screens seem really small, compared to GSC Premiere Class in Signature Gardens)
*
Tracking to be the biggest pre-sales in history, biggest opening of all time and what not, Avengers Endgame is the real deal for the box office. It simply is the movie event of the year! rclxm9.gif
So definitely have to watch in the best cinema hall in Malaysia. Now lets clear up all the fuss and muss. Avengers Infinity War and Endgame are the only movies in history till date to be shot 100% on IMAX cameras, making IMAX the 1st choice, no questions asked!
Check It Out!!

So which IMAX to choose?
Seeing that the Digital IMAX is the only way for Malaysians, my guess is that the newer IMAX branches might be the better choices to go to. Cleaner screen, newer equipment, better environment. I've got my tickets for Endgame @ TGV IMAX Central i-City in IMAX 3D thumbsup.gif Although the other IMAX will still be a good spot for it regardless. To those who wants exclusivity/premium feel, get the IMAX Indulge seats at Sunway Velocity.

IMAX 2D or IMAX 3D?
Last year I watched Infinity War in IMAX 3D @ TGV 1 Utama. I was impressed with IMAX as usual, but not for its 3D presentation, which depends on the movie actually. IMAX 2D would have been equally good, or better for me. Considering the fact that Endgame runs for more than 3 hours, I'm not sure if 3D will be the better option if you are prone to headaches and discomfort. Given the choice I would have preferred the 2D option for Endgame. Unfortunately, TGV has more 3D showtimes to capitalize on the hype laugh.gif Next time you guys wanna watch a 3D movie, keep track on this site as they suggest movies to be watched in 2D or 3D: https://www.cinemablend.com/3d/

Best non-IMAX option?
Go with BigScreen or Maxx Halls. How far wrong can you go? These halls are already equipped with Dolby ATMOS as well.

Premium halls?
As I have suggested, the Indulge seats in IMAX are your best bets, don't think twice. The rest of the premium halls (Gold Class, Premiere Class, LUXE) will come with a smaller screen and sound. Suitable for those who truly desire comfort and exclusivity over big halls with the masses. Choice is yours smile.gif

Don't care about which cinema hall or tickets sold out?
Well, the least you can do is get to the biggest hall of your nearby cinema that you know is reliable and consistent.

Good luck on scoring Endgame tixs on the opening Wednesday night thumbup.gif

I'm guessing any 10 rows from the back (center seating) will be good! I prefer it into my face so for me, the 8th to 12th row from back is ideal. I'm judging this based on the IMAX I've been to 1U, Sunway Pyramid, Velocity and Gurney Paragon only tongue.gif

I noticed you mentioned that TGV Indulge has IMAX screen, is it a real IMAX screen? And whats the difference of screen between IMAX 2D and Indulge (TGV Sunway Velocity)? Thanks
*
Its better put that there's an indulge seat in an IMAX. TGV Velocity's IMAX also has a dedicated Indulge Twin Seats (RM96 for Endgame), allocated at the back of the hall. They also have the indulge seats for a normal cinema hall. Its also safe to say that we don't have the real 70mm IMAX in Malaysia. Hope it helps...

GSC- Midvalley - HALL 18 with ATMOS

Only 7 rows for middle seats.

Not sure if this is good for 3hours movie. Is the screen really that big? Any can give feedback?
