Benefits of watching Alien Romulus in IMAX is for the taller image as the 1.9:1 aspect ratio version of the film is exclusive to IMAX. Other formats, Big DA included will be 2.39:1. You will be missing some picture detail and imo, the extra image is pretty worth it since the scale of the space horizon shots are epic.

Otherwise, Dolby Atmos is the better audio experience for surround sound. IMAX is louder but sometimes can be deafening.

Onyx is mainly for the LED screen: brighter colours, better contrasts and higher definition detail. This format is the best looking of all the formats, but the screens are small. Mid Valley and I-City uses this JBL audio system while Tropicana Gardens Onyx has DA.

If you do want to visit an Onyx hall, I would recommend Tropicana Gardens. It has the largest Onyx screen among the 3 and better audio with DA. However, I think the DA set up there is weaker... At least the last time I was there for a film which was a few years back.

Edit
My recommendation on selecting which hall to watch certain films at is to search the film's technical specs online then check their aspect ratio and audio mix, not only imdb, but reddit and other promotional sources. For example, The Creator's aspect ratio was very wide, 2.78:1 or something, wasted on IMAX screens.

Sometimes, some films with 1.9:1 scenes aren't exclusive to IMAX like The Flash last year. There's a reason movie screens are slightly taller than 1.9:1 here even normal halls, so they can accommodate film's image.

Audio mix too to a lesser extend to see whether it has 12 track audio or not so you don't need to fuss to visit the limited IMAX 12 channel halls.
*
Yeah, the exclusive IMAX aspect ratio is very tempting. To be honest, I wasn't that interested in watching Alien: Romulus initially and I'm not super into Alien as well, but it seems like the reviews are pretty good compared to previous Alien films. And apparently, it's also got a lot of references to the game Alien: Isolation (which I didn't play because I'm a pussy but I do enjoy watching the playthroughs of it). So might as well just watch it now in cinema and maybe rewatch the old Alien films at some point.

And then I see people say that the sound design is particularly good and it's something I appreciate in films aside from visuals and cinematography. So might as well watch it in IMAX or finally try out Dolby Atmos, right? And so I'm gonna have to spend more money now on this film. laugh.gif

I think I'll watch it in IMAX and save DA for another more appropriate film in the future. If I do watch it in IMAX, it'll be my first horror film in IMAX and I don't usually watch horror films. sweat.gif

Not sure if I'll watch any film in Onyx since I'm not too particular with that kind of display quality in a cinema, and I already don't watch films in PLF that often. BIG Atmos seems to offer a better experience with a bigger screen with similar (or even better) audio. Or IMAX simply with a bigger screen. Maybe films like Avatar might benefit more with that kind of display quality with so much attention to the world?

Yeah, I'm gonna have to check the technical specs for films in the future. While I still enjoyed watching The Creator in IMAX because of the visuals, I think watching films like The Creator or Furiosa in DA might've been a better choice. It's not really because of the aspect ratio, but because they didn't place as much emphasis on IMAX visual quality as films like Oppenheimer and Dune, so it might've been better to appreciate the sound quality more in DA which were already pretty good in IMAX.

Thank you very much for all the information, by the way!

Watched it at Velocity IMAX and it was great! I think it was one of the last IMAX timeslots at Velocity, so it's great that I caught it. The aspect ratio probably makes a big difference especially on those space shots.

On the other hand, is anyone going to watch the OG Godzilla 1954 and Godzilla Minus One? Yup, GSC is showing them in cinemas as part of JFF 2024.

Unfortunately, it seems like there's very limited showtimes and only at Mid Valley and 1U, unless you want to watch Minus One at Aurum TRX IMAX. It's to be expected because it's part of JFF but it'd be great if there are more showtimes and cinema locations. You can also watch both in a movie marathon, but you have to buy both tickets manually which is strange.

They're also showing Akira. Yes, that Akira.

Anyway, I'm planning to watch them all. Not sure about the other JFF films since I'm not familiar with them but it's going to be great to be able to watch these in the cinema. I actually haven't watched any of these films yet and was thinking of watching them at home especially when it was expected that Minus One wasn't coming to the Malaysian cinemas, but I guess it was a good idea that I saved them until now.

This is all actually thanks to a recent partnership between GSC International Screens and Goggler (and also The Japan Foundation KL as usual for JFF) so I think we can expect to see more of these international films in cinemas. This is great for us cinephiles and you can follow Goggler on IG for news.

The tickets are already on sale now so better get them quick.

GSC is also showing Harry Potter 1 and 2 soon but I'm not super hyped on that. We'll see.

Hello fellow lowyat!

I was looking for the BEST IMAX experience (with specs) that you could possibly find around semenanjung??

I'm planning to watch Joker: Folié a Deux in another 30 days so I better prepared some ammo 😆

This is gonna be my 2nd time of IMAX experience!!
*
For the long answer, you can get a very detailed breakdown and review from Katharsis here: https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...#entry109116763

But the short answer is TGV Sunway Velocity IMAX.

It's one of the few IMAX with Laser and 12-channel audio in Malaysia and it's got the biggest screen out of them all. I always go there for IMAX now.

Except if you're looking for a premium and luxurious experience, which would be GSC Aurum Theatre at The Exchange TRX, but with apparently smaller screen.

Yo LightKeyDarkBlade, I checked out the JJF stuff at GSC and man, I wished I knew sooner as the tickets were already sold off like hotcakes. The tickets are cheap as well at RM10. I mainly want to watch Godzilla Minus One in IMAX, or at least Mid Valley's Hall 18 as it is their DA hall, but the latter hall is booked through while the former's ticket price is RM50 (OG price is RM70 but still). You're not required to book a whole twin seat unlike the hall's usual booking MO, they separated the twin seats this time around.

However, I have already watched Godzilla Minus One (gotta love vpns), so I'm not in the hype to watch it. I still do want to watch it in a cinema hall, mainly DA since the film is properly audio mixed for DA. IMAX not really worth since the film is 2.39:1 and mainly, it doesn't have 12-channel audio config, only 6-channel.

Conclusively, all the JFF films are almost fully booked already, so I also missed my chance for Akira, OG Godzilla. I think Aurum IMAX still have decent seats for Minus One, but RM50 is eh... I mean, I could finally tick off my "visit all KV's IMAX hall" bucket list, but I do have standards of price value and not motivated enough to tick this list off (KLCC Suria IMAX is the smallest screen in Malaysia, surprisingly taking that spot away from Sunway Pyramid, and East KL Mall is pretty far).

I was interested in the Harry Potter films, but they are mainly in the Velvet halls, and a ticket cost RM60... so no. I'll probably check them out in streaming instead (if I'm bothered to).
*
Ah shiet. I checked the seatings again and there are still seats left, but either at the side or a little to the front. I think even if the seating isn't ideal, it's probably still worth a watch since it's only RM10 per ticket. And at least for me, nothing beats watching a movie in the cinema even if it's a regular hall. Like I couldn't get an ideal seat for Akira as well so I ended up buying a seat at the side. I'm kinda surprised that Akira is selling better than both of the Godzilla films. The sales for both Godzilla films are also similar since I expect Minus One to sell better than the OG 1954. They're all huge Godzilla fans, I guess.

I don't think you need to watch it in IMAX unless you want to use this opportunity to tick off your bucket list. laugh.gif It's probably better if you save it for another movie just like how I'm saving my DA experience. However, I actually didn't know Mid Valley's Hall 18 is the DA hall. Interesting. Not BIG Atmos though but I guess this'll be my first experience with regular DA.

I'm still thinking whether to watch Sand Land since it's based on Akira Toriyama's work. There're still quite a few seats left. hmm.gif

The Harry Potter films will be available in regular halls as well in October. I'm pretty sure they'll open up the ticket sales but maybe 1-2 weeks before screening in October. Or you can buy a ticket bundle on Keepsake by GSC and you also get collectible tickets. It's similar to the Warner Bros. promotion we had (last year?).

@LightKeyDarkBlade @Katharsis Well thank you for the utmost responses.

To clarify more about the student fee ticket on TGV, I don't see any viable options to choose as student when I'm buying tickets via online. Is there any other way how to do so or I just fail to spot.

Like what BetterCallSaul said, student pricing is only available for screenings during weekdays before 6pm. It's not available after 6pm or during weekends and public holidays.

Haven't been here in a while and also haven't really watched movies in the cinema for a long time already. Nice to see I still recognise some familiar names here.

Kinda late for F1 but since friends ajak so I'll tag along and it seems like we're watching in 4DX. How's F1 in 4DX?

Doesn't seem like there's IMAX anymore 'cause there are movies like F4 and the upcoming Demon Slayer now.

I know my things with IMAX but no idea with 4DX since I've never tried it before.

I kinda want to watch F1 in 4dx but kinda sian with the film since I watch it 4x in IMAX hahaha. It should be very fun since it's high octane, thus the seats will move more. That and the wind velocity etc to add in the mix.

I think it may get a few more IMAX slots on the 7th Aug to 13th, that week, since F1 returned to IMAX halls after a week of Superman. 7th Aug would be the 3rd week for Fantastic Four and it's losing steam right now in terms of ticket booking. I think IMAX Corp decides which films would return to the halls than TGV/GSC, and considering how popular F1 is even now, it could return.

Otherwise, bro, it's a film by the Top Gun Maverick director and 4dx with that film was top tier (I watched top gun in 4dx back in 2022, shit was fire). This film is also fantastic action/racing wise, I'm sure it will be a blast.
*
Damn, 4x in IMAX! The most times I watched the same film in IMAX was Oppenheimer which was 3 times I think.

Welp, time to see how F1 is like in 4DX. Very curious.

So I watched F1 in 4DX at LaLaport.

Honestly, it's really fitting for the film. Since I hadn't tried 4DX before, I wasn't used to it at first and sometimes it took me out of the movie with all the seat movements.

But as time went on, I got accustomed to it and was immersed in the film. The 4DX effects are mostly fine. I just find the water spraying effect to be a bit strange and not so fitting for the film.

I think 4DX is a very specific type of cinema experience that's not suitable for many films. But it's made for films like F1. I can recommend it. Not sure if there are different 4DX experiences for different cinemas since I've only tried the one at LaLaport.

Now I'm curious how Ford v Ferrari would've been like in 4DX since I really enjoyed that one even in a standard cinema.

Planning to watch the new Demon Slayer movie, is it recommended to watch it in IMAX or should I just watch it in GSC's ATMOS ONYX or BIG ATMOS?
*
Yeah, personally speaking, I don't see a real benefit to watching anime films in IMAX. Aspect ratio is the same and sound mixing is also the same as far as I know.

It's an animated film; this kind of films generally have no major difference in IMAX. Some animated films might have IMAX 6-track sound mixing but it's not necessarily better than other formats. Like Transformers One was available in IMAX last year, but was it worth it? I don't think so.

Films that are shot with IMAX cameras definitely should be watched in IMAX in my opinion. For films that are not, it really depends on what real benefit and different experiences it can offer for the respective film. My last IMAX experience was Alien: Romulus from last year and even though it's not shot in IMAX cameras, it offers a great IMAX experience with its aspect ratio and sound mixing.

Demon Slayer? Nah.

Thanks for the replies, in the end I chose going for Onyx ATMOS at IOI Mall Damansara's GSC instead of IMAX (not like there is any IMAXs with vacant seats, all booked out for next few days everywhere!). Still had a damn good time even when it's not IMAX, and the Onyx LED screen was a damn treat with gorgeous animations!
*
Nice! Yeah, if I wanted to watch it on a really big screen, I would watch it in BIG or something instead of IMAX. I just don't see the benefit in Demon Slayer in IMAX with pretty much the same visual and audio quality. Any other format would've been better than IMAX for Demon Slayer in my opinion.

I'm really surprised that Demon Slayer in IMAX is full everywhere when I last checked. Not that I should be surprised, I guess. The common moviegoers don't really understand what IMAX is. Sometimes I also question the cinemas' decisions in selecting IMAX for films. I get it for Demon Slayer since they know people will watch it in IMAX anyway so there's profit right there (really good profit 'cause they're all full). But I'll never forget when they used literally all IMAX halls for Madame Web when there were films like Dune: Part Two showing around the same time. Thank God they brought the IMAX halls back for Dune after 1 or 2 weeks. Like, bruh... why?

Just curious - if purely based on image & sound quality (disregarding price & value), which format & which hall do you think would've been better than IMAX for Demon Slayer?
*
Like what Katharsis said, something like Onyx or BIG or those with Dolby Atmos would've been good. Not to say that it's wrong to watch it in IMAX but you're paying a lot more for quite possibly not even the best experience. But yeah, it depends on your preferences in terms of the balance between visual and audio quality since they all offer different perks.

Just watched Seven Samurai at Mid Valley yesterday (first screening) and it was amazing. It's remastered in 4K and it was my first time watching it, and some more on a big screen in cinema. Fantastic.

Also watched the special screening of Diamonds in the Sand at MyTOWN on Wednesday for free. Too bad there's only 1 screening for that because it's a very good film and it's a Japanese-Filipino-Malaysian co-production, with the same editor who also worked on The Gardening of Evening Mists and Abang Adik (both very good Malaysian films). The Q&A session was also insightful.

Most likely going to watch some other films for this JFF. Really like how JFF is turning out when they show really good films like Seven Samurai. JFF 2024 even had Godzilla 1954, Godzilla Minus One, and Akira.

Speaking of animation Princess Mononoke is having an IMAX re-run as it got a 4k remaster or something. I've never watched any Studio Ghibli film so gonna take this opportunity hahaha. Aspect ratio is 1.85:1 so screen real estate may be enticing. Will share my experience after I watched it in Velocity.
*
I watched a few Ghibli films before but not Mononoke so I might watch that. Most likely not in IMAX though. laugh.gif I still haven't watched Demon Slayer so might need to watch that first. sweat.gif Enjoy your movie!

Last year watched Akira

No regrets

Not very action as i thought but the story great

Best RM10 i ever spent🤑🤑👏👍

I actually spent RM20 for Akira because I bought a ticket the first time and then it turned out I couldn't make it for the screening. sweat.gif Oops. Eh, still worth it. I guess I wasted 1 seat. laugh.gif

Even if we're not talking films like Akira, Godzilla or Seven Samurai, I think RM10 per movie is very cheap and very worth it. The JFF films are all expected to be at least decent or good; it just depends on your personal tastes.

I watched 3 films last year and 4 films this year and I enjoyed all of them. And because I got 3 stamps this time, I got some free gifts. I spent like RM41 to watch 4 films (Diamonds in the Sand was a free screening and The Solitary Gourmet was RM21), one of them being Seven Samurai, and I got free gifts as well? So worth it, man. A lot better than those fan screenings when you spend like RM50 to watch 1 movie and get some "free gifts".

I'm wondering, does anyone know what the aspect ratio for One Battle After Another is for IMAX?

According to IMDb, it's 1.43:1 for IMAX GT Laser & IMAX 70MM. But we have neither in Malaysia, right? As far as I know, we only have either CoLa or XT.

So does that mean we only get the default aspect ratio that is 1.85:1 for IMAX?

Aw man. I was hoping for something better at least, not necessarily 1.43:1.

Now I'm not sure if I want to watch it in IMAX since it'll basically be just for the IMAX 6-track sound mix.

I've watched a couple of Paul Thomas Anderson's films before (There Will Be Blood and Phantom Thread) and as much as I love his films, I'm not sure if I want to spend IMAX pricing for this.

Yup - the PT Anderson films you quoted are the best (+Magnolia/Boogie Nights/Hard Eight) - I would rewatch those and not OBAA. Not missing much if you catch this at any tiny 1.78:1 hall.
*
It also helps that Daniel Day-Lewis is the lead actor in both of those films, who is one of the greatest actors alive (and one of my favourites). I need to watch more of PTA's films, especially those with Philip Seymour Hoffman 'cause I hear he was a really great actor, quoted by Tony Leung Chiu-wai (also one of my favourites) to be one of the best alongside actors like DDL. RIP, gone too soon.

I think I'll still watch OBAA in the cinema, just not in IMAX. Just need to find time for it.

Reviews of Tron Ares revealing it to be a bust. Ahhh I need my movie fix! This season really dry af ah for films.

Yeah, unfortunately. But then again, Tron: Legacy had very similar review ratings and I enjoyed that film despite its flaws. The original Tron, thought I haven't watched it yet, also had very similar mixed reviews, only slightly more positive. And yet, look at how it became a cult classic and how big the fanbase is now.

So I think it's just a thing with the Tron series and I wouldn't pay too much attention to the reviews. Might watch it in IMAX.

Interested in Predator: Badlands, but still undecided on whether I need to watch it in IMAX or not.

Late update but I watched Tron: Ares in IMAX and I enjoyed it. Definitely a flawed film but I don't think it's as bad as people make it out to be.

I decided to watch the original Tron 1982 afterwards since I recognised some references (from Kingdom Hearts lol) and it turns out there were a lot of references to it in Ares.

Since I watched all 3 Tron films, I notice Ares is very much a Tron film like the previous 2. Mixed critic reviews, visually spectacular, excellent music, average or decent story, etc. Acting is also not a strong point in general across all 3 films. The acting (especially in Legacy) is pretty much carried by Jeff Bridges, though there are also a couple of notable acting performances from other actors (Ares also has a couple). Character writing is definitely one of the weak points of Ares but Tron '82 and Legacy are also not excellent too; Legacy has arguably the best character writing out of the 3.

So yeah, Ares is Tron film. NIN soundtrack is very good but it's unfair to compare it with Daft Punk.

It's a sequel to both Tron '82 and Legacy, but you can't go in expecting another Legacy. I think watching Tron '82 apart from Legacy would definitely enhance the experience of watching Ares. But it's a very old film with dated (but still impressive) CGI from the '80s, so it might be difficult to appreciate it and it would be like a fever dream to you if you can't vibe with it.

The ending and the mid-credits scene are setting up a sequel (also related to both Tron '82 and Legacy). But unfortunately, it's not doing well at the box office. Maybe we have to wait another 15 years for the sequel. cry.gif
