Well generally i says it depends on what you wanna do , if you really wanted to be flexible and able to learn anything about IT (from networking to programming to etc blah blah blah , people with enthuasiasm in technology tend to wanted to know more about computer rather than treating IT as a degree course) , Yes mathematics is needed .
But if you're a person who just think studying IT is because you know it has better future prospect and it's not something you have interest in (generally many Malaysian assume they like to play game , do some wallpaper changing and minor on tweaking consider they have interest in IT is false thinking ) . Then you will tend to just learn thing that will help you get a job in future rather than really go into the world of technology , then i would say mathematics is not a necessary , for example you might think nowadays web technology is so in need and you just wanted to focus on learning to design and create website then it might not be the case that you know any advance mathematics . But if you really have interest in IT stuff then you wouldnt just wanted to solely get a job but you wanted to know more , you can see for e.g facebook . Most of their algorithms being created to utilize all the feature on facebook (for e.g there's a new implementation on facebook where they will evaluate who's post updates should be shown on your facebook wall more frequently by evaluating which person facebook profile you visited the most , like the person post the most , chat with the most and etc ) . Athough this is something behind the scene but it's something so important that will affect the user experience of facebook user . There's no worry if nowadays your math is no good but the only problem is you will not able to deduce better algorithm for the thing you wanted to create , but lucky nowadays there are many API and framework out there that provides algorithms that are readily to be implemented by programmer for their own website and ease programmer job . But seriously if you're really into IT things and you very very very very love it , you would wanna create new things yourself instead of realying on existing one to make yourself a better one .

Some people also say mathematics and algorithms are two different things , all programmer needs to know is how to deduce algorithms . To me , it's something very vague so I would say the statement "mathematics is not needed to create a good algorithms" is not right nor wrong and this is the same situation as "mathematics is 100% needed to create a good algorithms ". To really give you an analogy , just take basketball as an example . Treat mathematics as Gym and algorithms as Basketball Training , it's true that no matter how long a person spend in Gym training his body and didn't do any training in basketball how is he going to know how to play basketball ?? In other way if a person has basketball training and without Gym training , he might get difficulties because his body is not fit enough to handle all the skills . There's the reason why basketball player go to Gym and also undergo basketball training in order to train both of their body and also skill in basketball .

This is same as math and algorithms , math is a way for us to train our brain in logical thinking , with better logical thinking generally you can come out with an algorithms faster and better though there're maybe an exception where a person not good in math might create a good algorithms (the world is so complex so I can't 100% assure things will not happened even though I have never encountered it before) , but still mathematics is a stepping stone for you to adapt better in IT field but as I say , many API and framework has been created to give programmer an abstract view of a system so that programmer doesn't need to care much about the underlying process but still if you wanna really go further and become better , you seriously need to throw away the mindset of what is needed in IT and what is not needed . A person who really wanted to learn won't have this kind of mindset and learn whatever he feels he wanted to . For example some people might laugh at people studying biology when he's pursuing IT , but i salute this guy for being so eager to learn . Who says biology can't be implemented in IT ?? Can't I create a program that analyse cell or gene ?? A technological breakthrough is someone who think out of bound but not confine to a set of thinking , this is why many people in Malaysia cannot have breakthrough because they have wrong mindset .

Let me give you a real world example , Google founder Sergey Brin is a computer science major as well as Mathematics major , he managed to make use of his knowledge in mathematics to create a data mining system and implement it on an old pc which is the first generation of google search engine . So in the end , it's not the matter of whether IT people should or shouldn't study biology , shouldn't take food(TROLL) as it's not related to IT or what . It's how you apply what you've learn and learn not for the sake of graduating and getting a job .
