QUOTE(iAlien @ Oct 10 2012, 11:20 AM) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JingxiangQUOTE The number of joss stick varies. When a devotee uses five, the sticks each represent respect for Tian Di Jun Qin Shi (天地君親師), where tian and di denote the realms of heaven and earth; jun the ruler—which could be Guan Shengdi, the prime minister, or another leader; qin the kins and relatives; and shi one's teacher or teachers. When offered with three joss sticks, each stand for Tian Di Ren (天地人), again tian and di for the two realms, and ren for all humanity as well as those who are deceased. Lastly it can also be practiced with one joss stick, denoting all creation, including both heaven and earth. Rarer still would one use nine josses which come to denote all of creation and all of heavens. This is for Taoism, btw. |

QUOTE "but it significantly reduced risk among smokers, even after adjusting for lifetime smoking amount." However, the researchers qualified the findings by noting that incense burning in the studied population was associated with certain low-cancer-risk dietary habits, and concluded that "diet can be a significant confounder of epidemiological studies on air pollution and respiratory health." safe to smoke when u go pray , anti smoker butthurt? |

I'm curious - what do people do with the offerings placed at the altars?
Back in my old neighbourhood, me and my family do most of our grocery shopping at a local shop run by a Chinese family. I always see them placing oranges and maybe sort other sort of food at altars inside and outside the house. But after that, what happens to the food? Will the family eat it? Throw it out? Burn it? Give it to the poor? I'm always curious about that, but am too scared to ask them. |

Just for general information, many religions and races burn incense. Not to mention those non-religious people who burn incense just for the smell.

QUOTE(LittleGhost @ Oct 10 2012, 01:22 PM) That is wrong. Taoism started out as a way of life long time ago, somewhere in between then and now, people used joss sticks.Taoism has never been associated with josstick. This is a common misconception. Taoism is not even a religion to begin with. Then what religion is it? In TS's picture? |

QUOTE(khelben @ Oct 10 2012, 01:26 PM) Taoism started out as a way of life long time ago, somewhere in between then and now, people used joss sticks. No.Then what religion is it? In TS's picture? Taoism in essence is Lao Tze's philosophy. The only reference you need to study is Dao De Jing. The rest is pure bullshit. Dao De Jing has no gods, no ghosts, no nothing. Religion in TS's picture is in its own a religion itself. A superstitious "i-believe-anything" religion. It has no name, and often varies according to where you are and who you learnt it from. I would coin it "superstitious native religion". Almost akin to animism. |

QUOTE(LittleGhost @ Oct 10 2012, 01:53 PM) No. Yeah actually those joss sticks stuff, with all the datuk-datuk, deities etc, don't really have an actual religion name for it. More like, pagan, paganism, paganist Taoism in essence is Lao Tze's philosophy. But it's true, the people who practise Dao de jing somewhere in between its creation till today, used joss sticks for dunno what but it's not popular. |
