I'm curious - what do people do with the offerings placed at the altars?

Back in my old neighbourhood, me and my family do most of our grocery shopping at a local shop run by a Chinese family. I always see them placing oranges and maybe sort other sort of food at altars inside and outside the house.

But after that, what happens to the food? Will the family eat it? Throw it out? Burn it? Give it to the poor? I'm always curious about that, but am too scared to ask them.

what have been put out cannot be taken back. leave it there and let it rot. or the animals will come and eat it. just ignore it. my home i use 3 for guan di, 3 for ancestor, 3 for land lord, 3 for tian shen, and 3 for zhuo tao(kitchen).
