there's 1 thing i missed out, for the screen size, 14" it's not 1900x1080 is it? does it really show FHD at it's best?
*
No 14" in Malaysia come with 1920x1080 (FHD) screen.
Therefore you will not be able to see FHD (1080p) materials (movie, video ...) properly on screen (scale down). What you can do is to connect through HDMI port to an external display or HDTV that can show FHD .

1. Preferred Brand - any brand except acer( bad material feel) and asus (bad warranty service)
2. Budget - 2.5-3k
3. Usage - light gaming ( some nfs most wanted ) file reading (law student)
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 14 if possible fhd screen for the max working space. if possible 15 might be ok if the weight is not too heavy and most of all must be portable not too bulky
*
Go and touch the new S7 from Acer, it has a quality feel smile.gif Not going to refute your comment on dear Asus though smile.gif

There is no FHD (1920x1080) screen for 14" in Malaysia. The best you can get for 14" is HD+ (1600x900) but those come in models that exceed your budget tongue.gif Cheapest:
Dell
XPS 14, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT630M + 32GB mSATA+ 500GB(5400rpm) HDD + (1600x900)@RM3749[2.1kg], 4GB, backlit, spill resistant keyboard, W8

Samsung
NP700Z3C, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT630M + (1600x900)@RM3599[2.07kg], 6GB, 1TB, W7HP

If you go 15" and want FHD, they are kind of heavy (~ 3kg).

Dell

*
I can't judge for you whether the screen size / keyboard is too small for you. I strongly suggest you go out and touch and feel the real thing biggrin.gif

If you find the screen / keyboard too small for your liking, then come back and ask the sifus again icon_rolleyes.gif

http://ark.intel.com/products/series/65795
i3 Ivy bridge ULV always come with HD 4000. Intel is not going to cook some special chips laugh.gif
The UMA is related to the B9/8xx Pentium CPU, and the catalog just printed it that way.
The easiest way to verify is to check the display unit, and look at the device manager. Go out and poke poke touch touch the real thing already laugh.gif

Lots of owners' comment in those threads.

Y400 is only 14" lah laugh.gif

You can check out LYN garage sales forum, there are some reputable reseller there.
Or you can check with the owners in those threads above and compare deals with them.
Or you could PM "devour" sifu in LYN (disclaimer: we are not related as far as I know smile.gif )
Remember to negotiate. Beware of grey import unit and its caveat.

Guys, any help on Asus Zenbook Series? I damn confused with all those UX terminology and which one is newer / older / better / etc. Basically my main requirement is need the 19x18 IPS display.

The UX31 series has SSD vs UX32 series which has (lousy) 500gb/24gb combo drive, but the UX32 series has GT620M ... something like that? UX31 is quite significantly more expensive than UX32 leh, is it only because of the SSD?
*
UX32VD-R3001H, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT620M + 24GB mSATA SSD + 500GB HDD@RM2999[1.45kg], 4GB, W8
UX31A-R4005H, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD + (1920 x 1080)@RM3499[1.3kg], 4GB, W8
UX31A-R4003H, i7-3517U + Intel HD4000 + 256GB SSD + (1920 x 1080)@RM4599[1.3kg], 4GB, W8

Not so confusing lah smile.gif Only 3 specs currently in Malaysia.
FHD only available in UX31A.
Stock full SSD only available in UX31A (but you can upgrade UX32VD with SSD yourself, just make sure the SSD is skinny enough to squeeze in smile.gif )
Yes, UX32VD has GT620M, which btw, is considered quite low end. Don't expect miracle in playing games smile.gif

128G SSD is only ~ RM250++.
The premium command by UX31A, I think, is more due to the FHD screen, and the even skinnier body (if you compare them side by side, UX32VD is thicker and come with more ports)

Check out the real thing and make sure your eyes can get used to 1920x1080 resolution in 13" smile.gif

Personally I think its hideous haha
But you do get a lot from such a budget machine
*
Never heard a girl says Inspiron is "good looking" laugh.gif (except those XPS ...)

Inspiron 14R (Special Edition), i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M(28nm Kepler)@RM2049[2.38kg], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), W7HP/W8
A45VS-VX026H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT645M@RM2199[2.4kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8
Z480, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M@RM2299, 4GB, 1TB(5400rpm) W7HB, colors: grey/red/blue

I think these 3 are about on par in term of performance.
If taking aesthetic into consideration (and in general principle avoid Asus myself (come on Asus, just change SC already tongue.gif ), then Lenovo Z series is another model you can consider if you find Dell ugly laugh.gif

Btw, TJ, I am changing company, so have to return the T430. The new company that I am joining is Dell "kaki", so most likely I will end up with a Latitude hmm.gif
Thinking whether to ask for the 14" with HD+, or 15" with FHD hmm.gif I need the numpad in 15", but in office most probably I will get the e-port ... I remember the FHD in E6530 has better viewing angle than the HD+ screen in E6430, but again the e-port .... doh.gif

I had lost count with the model offered by Dell, let the sifu here recommend you

jimmykvt sifu is right, Dell is king in Malaysia in term of good warranty support. Then you have Lenovo, then HP ...
I think girl prefer something light?

Dell
Inspiron 14z, i3-3217U + AMD HD7570M + 32GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm)@RM2099[1.87kg], 4GB, W7HB/W8, *no VGA port, OD

HP

Price is RSP, negotiable. If you go for Dell / Lenovo, upgrade warranty to 3 year on site. HP, you can extend warranty as well, but still need to send to SC.

I suggest you read this starting from post no. 259 smile.gif

If you are lazy, I will cut the long story short.
There seems to be multiple causes for the wireless problem in U series. Hardware and drivers.
According to Lenovo (as per the forum), all U series manufactured after 23July2012 should not have hardware issue since the fix was implemented in factory from that date onwards. The problem is how could you be sure the unit that you buy is manufactured after this date? Resellers / Lenovo Malaysia may have some really old (crappy) stocks lying around laugh.gif
On the driver side, apparently Lenovo W8 driver is crap (not only the wireless, but also the power management). If you read the forum, you will find the solution.

Good luck in your adventure laugh.gif

Unlike US, where most brands is customisable, Malaysia most brands have fixed specs (and also a lot less models), so the chances to find amazing cheap gem is a lot less ....

Hello all,

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 14 (N4050) with very good specs at its price of RM1,999 last year, but it was disastrous. I had to get the motherboard changed TWICE within the span of 6 months. I ended giving the laptop to my little sis.

So I'm a bit traumatized here. I am a very poor student and I need recommendations for a new laptop.

1. Preferred Brand - Acer maybe? Not Dell or HP.
2. Budget - around 2k
3. Usage - I run bioinfomatics programs locally, so I need something that runs reasonably well.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 14-15" +-

I'm thinking of getting Lenovo G480 as seen here: http://i45.tinypic.com/2qp8z.jpg @RM1.999. I might get extended warranty.  Any thoughts? I would love more recommendations. Thanks!!

EDIT: Two posts before me recommended ASUS A45VS-VX026H and that has a better GPU than Lenovo G480 with the same CPU. So this is definitely going in my list.

Vaio SVE15128CV, i5-3210M + AMD HD7650M@RM2599[2.7kg], 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm), W8; colors: silver/white; Vaio backpack
(The price you get for Sony seems to be based of RM2299? I listed down the cheapest SVE1512 model in Sony Malaysia website. Maybe Courts is carrying some special specs)

Both should be good enough for your sis usage.
Price is pretty good deal smile.gif
Acer and Sony has OK warranty support in Malaysia.
The Sony is more heavy. Since both only has HD screen, you have the same screen real estate.
If you want good battery performance, you may want to look at models with Intel ULV CPU (i3/5/7-3xxxU).

Cos y400 look awesome....the red backlight...how heavy is it?

~ 2.5kg ++
Also, iinm, Nvidia Optimus is not working properly (?), so battery performance suffer.
Check with owners here to confirm:

Hi people,

Need help on getting a laptop:
1. Preferred Brand: Non-apple, windows
2. Budget: RM 5k
3. Usage: Business traveler. Lightest laptop, longest battery life and must have optical drive. If there is SSD it will be great
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: between 11"or more. 15.6" or less

QUOTE(PF T.J. @ Jan 2 2013, 04:19 PM)
Not exactly an ultrabook, but is pretty light for the power it offers (normal processor) and comes with optical drive... Doesn't have SSD though hmm.gif
13"
Toshiba
Portégé R930-2019, i3-2370M + Intel HD3000@RM3499[1.4kg], W7P, 4GB, 640GB (7200rpm), Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010; 3 years warranty, color: metallic black
Portégé R930-2001/R/B, i5-3210M + Intel HD4000@RM3099[1.4kg], 4GB, 640GB (7200rpm), W7HP; 3 years warranty, color: metallic black, red, blue
Most ultrabooks do not have optical drive, if you omit that requirement, there will be a lot more options  laugh.gif

@mystvearn, Thinkpad X230, get extended battery if need longer battery life...
*
Yup, most come with external ODD sweat.gif
iinm, this one:
Dell
Latitude E6230, i5-3360M + Intel HD4000@RM4550, 4GB, 320GB(7200rpm), W7P(32-bit)/W8 Pro (64-bit), 3-cell; [CPU options: i3-3360M-i7-3520M
Can customise it to SSD, and can come with e-modular bay ODD. And you can buy a 9-cell (90Wh) battery slice (it dock into the docking port at the bottom of the laptop, in total could give you 8-9 hours laugh.gif (without the battery slice, if you opt for the 6 cell battery which protrude out of the back of the laptop, can still last 5 hours)

Among the two Asus the first one has higher clock speed and better graphic card right ? I saw that the 3317u is a 17w CPU and 3120m is a 35w CPU so would the A45VS consume more power ? If the processor n graphic doesn't make a big diff then I'm going for the K46CM
*
QUOTE(PF T.J. @ Jan 2 2013, 08:36 PM)
The i5-3317U is a ultra low voltage processor whereas the i5-3210M is a normal processor.
An ULV processor consumes less power at the expense of CPU performance.
Still, since your usage doesn't really require a lot of processing power, and since you are into gaming, its better to go for one that has a better GPU... unless if portability is extremely important to you nod.gif
*
What TJ said was, yes, the 3210M consume more power than 3317U, but in return also give you more processing power.
At this budget, the GPU is the bottleneck of gaming performance. The GT645M is better than the GT635M, but GT635M can play MOBA (I supposed you mean like DOTA 2, League of Legend). FPS, it depends on game titles and the resolution / details level.
So overall, you have to decide whether the "light, thin" is more important, or the gaming performance is more important to you smile.gif

Check this out, within your budget (cheaper than MSI or Alienware of the same spec)

If you are concern about warranty in Malaysia, get Alienware or Illegear. Both has good warranty support and can extend warranty to 3 years.

In Malaysia, only Alienware and Illegear are customisable.
For MSI & Asus, the specs by MSI and Asus Malaysia are fixed. But if you want customisable for these brands, get it from Illegear website (but the warranty support will go through Illegear).

And if you only want to buy in July2013, better do another round of survey then. New models / promotion could be launched.
