Hi.

I'm planning to get a ultrabook between xps 13 or toshiba portege Z930-2002. Any advise on which model better? The price I got in pc fair today in Penang for toshiba is rm 3300? Is it cheap ? I'm going to use this laptop for long hours like 7-8 hours, for office work, programming software like visual studio, and some light graphics. Mostly would be heavy surfing and doing microsoft office. If you all can recommend different model would be good also. Thanks alot.

Depending on your definition of "light graphics" you might need a notebook with dedicated graphic card.
If you prefer an ultrabook, perhaps you can consider this one:
13"
Asus [Ultrabook] UX32VD-R3001H, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT620M + 24GB mSATA SSD + 500GB HDD@RM2999[1.45kg], 4GB, W8 ---> Has dedicated GPU

or
Asus [Ultrabook] UX31A-R4005H, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD + (1920 x 1080)@RM3499[1.3kg], 4GB, W8 --> comes with a full HD screen, larger workspace

If you prefer more performance but relatively shorter battery life, then this one (not ultrabook):
13"
Sony Vaio SVS13125CV, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M LE@RM3099[1.72kg], 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm), W8; colors: maroon/white/black/pink; Vaio carrying case

If you consider hybrids as "ultrabooks", then perhaps this?
11.6"
Acer Iconia W700, i3-2365M + Intel HD3000 + 64GB SSD + (1920x1080; touch)@RM2199, 4GB, W8

Planning to buy a laptop soon and I'm very confused. I'm not sure whether I should choose a laptop based on its brand or the specs. And should I even consider getting an ultrabook (but they are kinda expensive.) @_@

1. Preferred Brand - Any
2. Budget - 3.5k and below?
3. Usage - Student work, photoshop(not all the time), mediocre gaming, multimedia
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - I was told to go for Acer V3-571G ( but I don't really like it), screen size maybe 14" or 15" and with FHD.
i7 processor preferred. Nice design, and not too heavy. I wanted to get Dell XPS but its too expensive. I did like the laptops with touch screen, W8 looks better with a touch screen no?

Really2 confused and any help will be appreciated! biggrin.gif

Normal notebooks with FullHD are mostly 15.6" in size yo laugh.gif
And are mostly powerhouses, for work or game brows.gif
15.6"
Lenovo Ideapad Y580, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GTX660M + 1920x1080 @RM2999[JBL], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HB/W8, backlit keyboard, 2 yrs warranty

Might help you abit with deciding laugh.gif

I think you need to narrow down abit the devices you are looking for. If you decide to go with ultrabooks (or those with touchscreen), you'll have to sacrifice on performance (both CPU and GPU)...
If 15.6" powerhouses, then these would be your best best:
15.6"
Dell Inspiron 15R (Special Edition), i7-3612QM + AMD HD7730M + (1920x1080; anti-glare) + 32GB SSD + 1TB HDD(5400rpm)@RM3199, 8GB,backlit keyboard optional, W7HP/W8 --> use remaining money for warranty support [Dell offers the best warranty support in Malaysia]

Lenovo Ideapad Y580, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GTX660M + 1920x1080 @RM2999[JBL], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HB/W8, backlit keyboard, 2 yrs warranty --> This one offer a much better graphic performance

*Personally I don't think having a touchscreen on a normal notebook (that the screen cannot twist or detach) is not a good idea. All you are going to get is a wobbly screen due to the user's excessive "poking"; and also an even more expensive bill should the screen spoils sad.gif

My term of graphic means very light usage using photoshop or corel draw to do small editing. I'm not good in graphics actually. sweat.gif Just test and try. If we use intel graphics, it won't be sufficient right ? What do you think of asus ultrabook and warranty wise ? I'm using asus laptop currently which is core i3 model with nvidia graphic but this is low end model and I don't have any problem. Recently, I'm hearing a lot of complaints on asus after sales service when claiming warranty. icon_question.gif If we don't use for graphic what other options do we have?

The sony vaio stated Up to 11.0 hours battery life with optional sheet battery. What does this mean and how long is standard can last? Thank you very much for helping.

The Lenovo Z480, 14R SE and the Asus A45VS are the 3 top picks for your budget, especially if you are into gaming nod.gif
Whether a notebook lasts or not depends very much on how you take care of the notebook. Warranty support is also pretty important when something bad happens (touchwood)  tongue.gif

Lenovo warranty support is generally good in Malaysia, but sorry I can't comment for Kuching (I am from KL).
Y580 is a popular gaming machine, so you have strength in number smile.gif
Anyway, Lenovo offer on site warranty (not the standard warranty that come with Y580). Ask the seller if they could do it for you or Lenovo offer it in Kuching. 3yr onsite extension from the standard 2 year warranty will cost you RM250+, I think.

Well thanks to Intel, everyone is confused what is "ultrabook" now
Intel's original definition for ultrabook state it should NOT have discrete GPU that drain battery life, but recently after much protesting from brands, Intel relent.

Seriously though, the HD4000 in 3rd gen icore (ivy bridge) processor is a significant improvement over the HD3000 in 2nd gen (sandy bridge). HD4000 can let you play some games (eg. star craft 2, etc) in low setting reasonably well
So it can definitely handle "light" photoshop or corel draw, just don't expect miracle when you start doing 3D design or modeling

Ultrabook aim for portabilty and battery life. Those ultrabook that has discrete GPU, once the GPU kick in, battery drain fast.

Asus Malaysia warranty support is "iffy" to put it nicely. No doubt Asus design and quality for consumer line is pretty good, but there bound to be lemon Warranty support service, from what we see and heard, is inconsistent.

The Sony Vaio "sheet battery" is a very thin battery, the diameter is almost the full size of the laptop, (like a sheet of paper (but thicker) hence the name) that could be attach to the bottom of the laptop.

All ultrabook that use Intel ULV processor has decent battery life (anyway they are your best bet already, no other option give better battery performance ). If the model use SSD (no HDD), don't have discrete GPU, then battery could last 5-6 hours under "normal" usage.

If you still looking for ultrabook, and worry about Asus warranty:

Dell
XPS13, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3299[1.36kg], 4GB, W8, backlit
HP
Envy SpectreXT 13-2018TU, i7-3517U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3399[1.39kg], 4GB, W8, 4 cell 45WHR, no ODD, backlit keyboard
Samsung
9 series NP900X3C, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD + (1600x900)@RM4799[1.16kg], W7HP

These are great ultrabook, and the brand offer good warranty support. Dell of course standout, since you can extend the warranty (if you willing to pay) to longer period, and they offer NBD on site service (you call, they come to your place to fix it on next business day).

TJ suggested Asus Zen because it has the best screen (IPS panel) and best resolution (FHD) among ultrabook.

Asus
A45VS-VX026H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT645M@RM2199[2.4kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8

extra 4G RAM cost you ~RM80 extra. Asus line up all in W8 now (unless you manage to find some old stock). Talk to reseller if they could give you Win7 if you insist. Btw have you actually use Win8 before or you just won't "touch" it since "people" say it is bad? laugh.gif

All laptop have "heat" issue when gaming (even high end gaming laptop with good internal fan, heatsink, layout design, etc., is not immune).
Get a good cooling pad or some ingenious external cooling solution.

The Asus N55SL has been EOL-ed for quite some time yo laugh.gif
It is now replaced with the much better (and way nicer looking) Asus N56 brows.gif
Just like its predecessor, the N56Vz comes with 2 variants:
15.6"
Asus
N56VZ-S4284H, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT650M + (1920x1080) + Bluray@RM3699[2.7kg][B&O], 4GB, 1TB, W8; color: black

N56VZ-S3151H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT650M@RM2799[2.7kg][B&O], 4GB, 750GB, W8; color: black

The latter fits your budget, and you can upgrade the RAM to 8GB with the remaining money, plus get an external HDD tongue.gif
