51 people joined the course with me in Monash in my first year. Today only 39 people managed to cross the finish line. 23.5% failure rate lol

Did they fail or quit?

My uni made some new implementations to make it harder to pass. The academic papers are not the tough ones but all the practical examinations are quite intense! (preparing sterile formulations, prescription checking etc.)

The most discouraging part is that we go through all the stress and hard work only to be spat on by doctors and the public

mostly failed. you have to repeat the units with the juniors, unless the school thinks that you are worthy of a supplementary paper. however if you fail 3 units then u won't be allowed to sit for supp papers at all. i've never had an easy assessment before. good for u  laugh.gif

haha GPs only. doctors in the hospitals appreciate us very much.

We had it like this too, but now they changed it to 1 repeat instead of 3 haha.

did you have any hospital experience? Planning to go for a hospital attachment before I fly off to Caridff

Just on that matter, can you or anyone else elaborate on how the general public and healthcare professionals in Malaysia view pharmacists? Do they view us as respected professionals or just another glorified drug salesperson? I'm likely to move back to Malaysia soon and was just curious...

I started a thread in RWI when the dispensing separation drama erupted (again) and I'd say that only 1/4 of the population view pharmacists as healthcare professionals, even though many of them would say that they agree that pharmacists are HCPs, but they're other statements imply that they barely trust us. My sample size was extremely small though.

Things are improving though, more and more pharmacists are being vocal about their career and educating their friends and family about what they actually do.

biggrin.gif hello. T have concerns to ask anyone here about how you spend your RM250 book voucher. confused.gif  confused.gif  Is there some recommendation pharmacy and medical books (it is better to mention where) that should buy for a fresh pharmacy student (long terms use: BNF). For your info, I am currently in semester 2 year1 of bac of pharmacy. Thanks icon_question.gif  icon_question.gif  rclxm9.gif  icon_idea.gif

As a pharmacy student based in the UK, I don' think a BNF is worth it for long term use as it is updated continuously and old BNF's might not be as useful in a few years. I attended a conference where the president of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society was present and there was a debate about the use of BNF's, and he mentioned that the aim is to go completely paperless into the future via online services like Medicines complete.

You might want to look into digital solutions but as a year 1 student, I don't think it's useful since by the time you graduate things might have changed a lot and online copies are expensive if you're not covered by your company. It's only useful in practice anyway.

I'd recommend Rang and Dale's Pharmacology (it's a classic). I used my book voucher on it and it's a good reference book. Also, if you have spare, consider getting Bad Science by Ben Goldacre and his other book on Bad Pharma. You can listen to his talk on TED too. Many of my lecturers recommend it as it introduces current problems in the pharmaceutical industry in relation to evidence based medicines. It'll help you to think about Evidence based medicines. An understanding of EBM will be very helpful in the future IMO.

Anyone worked as a hospital pharmacist/is currently working as a hospital pharmacist in Malaysia atm? I've got some questions!

Also, anyone got any experience getting a hospital placement (unpaid) without connections? I've sent cover letters and CV's to many hospitals without a single reply. I think my cover letter is pretty impressive because I got it checked by multiple experienced people! I was rejected by Australian hospitals on the basis of how they have a policy of only letting students from local Uni's have placements with them because of the insurance involved.

what kind of questions?

try approaching smaller hospitals.. higher chances they will layan you..

I forgot that you've graduated and probably passed your PRP already lol (man time flies, I remember asking questions in this thread like 3 years ago)

What are some smaller hospitals near KL/PJ

Also, for the PRP program, if you finish your PRP with hospital X, do you immediately progress as a qualified pharmacist in the same hospital? In the UK, you get "fired" once you finish your PRP-equivalent with said hospital, usually the hospitals will rehire you, but if they don't have space you'll have to find a job elsewhere.

Another question would be: Is it true that private hospitals are actually behind government hospitals in terms of the roles that can be played by a pharmacist?
