I am planning to get a laptop with Centrino M technology, but I know nothing about the WIFI, can anyone please tell me what additional device is needed for WIFI connection, do I need to buy any card or antenna? Do i need to register an account with TMnet (hotspot package)?

Centrino laptops have the WIFI chipset built in, as you'll find out when you see the laptop. Always make sure what's in the package - if you don't know what you're looking for you may get swindled, and that's not cool.

As long as you can see the WIFI logo on your laptop, you should be good to go.

As for connection, you don't HAVE to register a hotspot account but it will help if you need to get online a lot and there are no free spots near you (which will happen soon IMHO).

Hope this helps.

Do you mean as long as I have a new centrino laptop, I can just bring it to any hotspot area (which is free) and it will be ready for me to surf anytime?

Centrino itself is supposed to be an Intel Pentium Mobile with Wi-fi built in. Then as for hot-spots, currently the free ones are in STARBUCKS which is by the telco TIMEZONE. Other like Airzed and TMNET requires you to buy a prepaid card.....

Does this software provides full protection? including Antivirus, Firewall, Anti-Spyware, and etc?
If so, why there are still so many individual security protection tool in the market? like Norton Antivirus, Norton Internet Security?

sorry thread starter, i also want to ask. notworthy.gif

about wifi pcmcia bus card, i know better get 802.11g type, max speed 54 Mbit/s. but after browse around, i found out there is super G which run 108 Mbit/s.

quoted from wikipedia:
QUOTE
Non-Standard Channel Bonding

Chipmaker Atheros sells a proprietary channel bonding feature called Super G[1] for manufacturers of access points and client cards. This feature can boost network speeds up to 108 Mbit/s by using channel bonding. Also range is increased to 4x the range of 802.11g and 20x the range of 802.11b. This feature may interfere with other networks and may not support all b and g client cards. In addition, packet bursting techniques are also available in some chipsets and products which will also considerably increase speeds. This feature may not be compatible with other equipment. Broadcom, another chipmaker, developed a competing proprietary frame bursting feature called "125 High Speed Mode" [2] or Linksys "SpeedBooster", in response to criticism of Super G's interference potential.
my question is:
which should one i go, normal g or super g? no point to get super g if INTERFERED with other networks rite? sweat.gif

The problem with Super G , is that if the router does not support it (or Access Point) , its useless

I suggest you to go with the normal G. Unless you have SUper G APs or Routers , then go with that

u mean, if the router doesn't supported, it's totally useless..no connection at all? i thought it will downgrade back to 54mbps.

i have interest to buy aztech brand super G one. do u think it will fit most of wifi spot in the malaysia? especially starbuck? sweat.gif

It will fall back to 54Mbps , when there is no "Super G AP" Detected. BTW , most hotspots in Malaysia are only .b , and secondly , we dont have 54Mbps Internet connection here in Malaysia yet....Unless you're going to Sweden or Singapore (15Mbps Broadband)

Yeah..you can. But home broadband can only offer so much speed(STREAMYX 1MB).
