Anyone converted their msian driving license recently? I tried to book a basic theory test (BTT) but it seems that the earliest date I can sit for the test is on the next Nov 21. Wondering why need to wait so long... Or is there anyway that I can sit for the test faster?

Thanks!

Hmm.. Doesn't really make sense since it is a computer based exam. I remembered when I took my undang-undang test at JB (8 years back), I can book the test anytime and resit whenever I want.

Unless they really have very limited number of computers. Hahaha.

Whats holding you back to pick 120k over 70k per year?

Given the same benefit, the salary is too far apart For same job scope. Did you forget something?

Poly, uni holiday.  Your waiting time is reasonable.
*
Hmm.... Can't they just set up more computers? Seriously 1 and 1/2 months wait is so loooong lar. Btw, anyone heard of EP holders are given 6 months (or 1 year) grace period so that he/she can drive in SG before converting his/her driving license?

Thanks for the heads up. I remembered I read this somewhere but I couldn't google it. Hah now I know its from SPF website smile.gif

They did expand the test center.

A quick check on one of the newer center revealed you did not pick earlier slot.

This time I agree a person have to learn to fish instead of asking for bigger pond with more fish.

Use the net. There are 3 test center.
*
I did look into Bukit Batok DC and SSDC. It appears that SSDC requires 1.5 months wait while I was told BBDC's waiting time is longer than SSBC. Another one is Ubi I guess? I'll look into it later.

Thanks!

Just saw there was no refund if you cancel your test date. Better verify with them is the rescheduling is FOC. Iirc, we can change our test date twice for free. I took my test at old sdsc amk branch. There was eye sight test and colour blind test too when I submit the application.
*
Thanks for the heads up (again). Actually I am now fine with the wait cos I think I maybe can drive a SG vehicle for 1 year before conversion smile.gif

Bro, your job need you to drive in Singapore? Look like I am in same shoes with you if I got my work permit approve. So you plan to drive Malaysia or Singapore registered car?
*
I will be driving my company’s car. Have you booked your BTT already? If not, book now! Because there is no expiry on BTT test, so it might come in handy if you need to convert your driving license later since the waiting period is so long.

Any idea on the eligibility of our Malaysian driving license? I am not sure about the English translation part as our license is written in Malay. Think Malay should be OK since it’s the national language. But oh well just wanna be sure..

Must drive? cant take cab and claim back company?
*
Can. But Car > Taxi. Lets say you are at some remote place and it is almost impossible to find a cab, you will see how convenient driving is. Some cabbies won't go to remote place even if you call for them. Since my company provided a car for me, I don't have to bear to cost of owning a car, so I'll choose to drive.

But sometimes finding parking slot can be difficult ohmy.gif

Hi Everyone,

I will graduate with Bachelor degree in graphic design March 2013, and plan to work in Singapore. I had around 3 years experience in both web, graphic, user-interface design job with client from Canada, etc. (by Freelance with good portfolio)

May I know:

1. Is it easy for company to hire foreign like us? Since it always stated Singaporean or PR preferred.

2. For those who came to Singapore and apply job through newspaper, where should we live? hotel or hostel (with deposit) ?

3. How much is the basic salary that probably I can get? Do they willing to pay high for foreigner?

4. For the employment pass, how long will it takes for apply and how long minimum before it expired, 1 year or 2 year? (Do I have to pay with my salary?)

5. I heard the tax is 20% for foreigner, but I also heard about tax refund, may I know what is that?

Please all senior in Singapore give me some guidance, and I am sorry if newbie like me ask so many questions.

God Bless You all smile.gif

Thanks So Much,

Kiero

Hi Kiero, hope you find my reply useful.

1) I would say its quite easy for Msians. Some company might have quota issues as in not enough quota to hire foreigners. But no worries if you're getting an EP since there is no quota for EP.

2) If you have relatives or friends currently in SG it would be much more easier maybe you can ask them to provide lodging? If not, there are some cheap hostels around which rent for $20~$30 daily, but be prepared to live with all sorts of people.

3) Not in the industry so can't advice but please bear in mind that competition is stiff nowadays (PRCs, Indians and even Europeans are flocking to Singapore). Your pay may be lower than locals.

4) Usually 2 years (I've a friend given 1 year validity though, he need to renew it every year).

Is SGD3500 enough to survive in Singapore?
BTW wad is the expected salary for an engineer who have 3 years work experience in Singapore?
*
There is always people asking "Can I survive with this salary" from time to time. I am sure you can find the answer you want on google.

Quick answer, yes. I am earning less than you do and I can save at least $2K per month. It really depends on your spending.

Wow......can save $2k with salary less then $3500. You stay in Singapore or JB? Thanks.
*
I live frugally. I stay on the outskirt sharing a room with a friend, my rent is below 300. Transport/mobile phone expenses all covered by company. I try to keep my meal expenses under $10 daily, so most of the time I'll eat chap fun.

Expenses/month = 300 (Lodging) + 240 (Meals) + 300 (Misc). Yeah thats about it even if I were to add transport/mobile expenses in, they won't cost more than 250. I am young and do not have any commitment. I go back home every weekend in JB to keep my entertainment expenses low.

So if you're talking about surviving, I am sure there are people out there who live more frugal than I do and still doing OK in SG.

QUOTE(toughnut @ Oct 9 2012, 09:55 AM)
you can survive in sg with expenses of sgd700~ per month.

food $250
phone $25
transport $50 (~$2/day)
room $250 (sharing)
misc $125

you can even further reduce the expenses if you have the motivation/desire.
*
Yup, you're right. It is not expensive to live in SG. These information can be easily retrieved from google.

Yupe north side, you're correct. Around 2k+ with some benefits that can help me save at least 500SGD per month (rough estimation), something like that. I guess it will depends on what's available by the time I start to job hunt, but for my case I probably should get some experience in Malaysia first right? Especially since I'm not the type that can save a whole lot of my salary, I like to enjoy my food  laugh.gif

Start in SG if you wanna build your career here. One thing very important is your network. If you start in KL, your network won't be very much useful if you wanna come SG later.

I wanted to ask, if my degree is not recognised in Singapore, is it possible for me to get a job there?

Well, technically, its just  not recognised by one of the professional bodies... For example, USM medical degree is not recognised in Singapore, meaning he/she could not practise as a doctor there, but can he/she find other jobs there?

Thanks!
*
Kindly check MOM for a list of recognized educational institution. I'm sure USM is in it.

USM's MBBS might not be recognized by SMC (they only recognize UKM and UM IIRC), but I believe you still can find work other than medical practice.

I'm a fresh grad from top US university (first class honors). Do fresh grad commonly get this salary? The interviewer told me that 'top school' like NUS grad could get 3k.. but in fact my school is better than NUS if he's talking about ranking or being 'top'. So I'm thinking is this being underpaid or not.
*
Fyi, 3K is average for NUS grad. Since your school is better than NUS and moreover you have a first class honors degree, you should be getting >3K.

I believe NUS first class honors grads are getting at least 3.6K.

Would like to ask if im able to work from dec till march only ?
How about working at singapore casino ?
Can? I have a sweaty palm, any position for me to work at singapore ? Using spm cert

btw regarding the tax issue, can i work from DEC untill march 2013 ? roughly 4 months only?
if i stop working at march and continue study at SG POLY, can be that way ? will i kena tax?
*
Have you received your official SPM? If no, I doubt anyone will hire you. Fyi, trial SPM or the result slip is not accepted by MOE (As well as school leaving certificate). If that's the case, I am afraid you will need to try your luck using PMR.

Anyway are you below 21? If you are, you can't even enter casino. Let alone to work there.

You will be liable to pay tax if your work period is in between 60 - 183 days.

You can work first on work permit then continue study later at any SG schools. I've done that before.

QUOTE(Quasi-Suave @ Dec 3 2012, 06:43 PM)
Strictly from a tax perspective, I think you will be liable to tax as a Tax Resident, under the criteria that you are :-

"a foreigner who has stayed in Singapore for 183 days or more in the year preceding the YA;"

The good news that as a Tax Resident (progressive tax rate), the final tax amount is often lower than a Non Tax Resident (15% flat) and the tax rate is 0% for the first SGD20,000 you make during the Year of Assessment (YA).
*
QUOTE(momijigari @ Dec 4 2012, 08:25 AM)
Chances of you getting tax is high, when you leave your job you/your HR will need to seek tax clearance.
That means the HR will inform the MOM/taxation office your last day of service and they would instruct the HR to withold your last salary for tax clearance.

If you work more than 183 days but earn less than S$20K, you do not need to pay tax. - this does not apply to you.

Everything goes by the book; imagine every tom, d*** and harry giving excuses to IRAS to get tax exempted  shakehead.gif
*
Like what Quasi-Suave mentioned. He won't be liable to tax if he stays more than 183 days and earns less than 20K.

Let's say he worked for 3 months (90 days) and continue to study in SG (with student pass). He will be a resident staying in SG for more than 183 days (Working + Studying).

No tax.

Another thing to add. The HR will most likely deduct your pay for tax first as it is still uncertain that you will be staying for more than 183 days.

You can get tax refund later after you prove that you have stayed for 183 days.
