FAQs

Employments:
Job opportunities are always available for those with higher education level & in-demand work experience. The following are the list of available online job sites:
1. Jobstreet
2. Contact Singapore
3. Jobs Central
4. JobsDB
5. eFinancialCareers.sg

The most effective but expensive method is to do it the old fashion way. Come over to Singapore, flip through the recruitment newspaper and apply for your job through the company itself. This way, you're almost guaranteed to be in front of the queue from those who applied through Jobstreet. You can also attend their interviews without any delays while you're here in SG. Do note that you can only stay 30 days at a time, and a total of only 60 days out of every 90.

Various employment passes are available to enable you to work in Singapore depending on your skills and pay. Employers will help you in the application of passes. Your job is however pending on the approval of the pass. Information of types of passes are available through MOM's website. Do not worry of what passes you get. Eventually all will allow you to work in SG. Some do fuss about it due to "status" and extra benefits (i.e: credit card and contract phone applications). Just be hardworking and move up the passes or apply directly for PR few years down the road.

All you need to know about PR application and requirements are available here: http://www.ica.gov.sg/page.aspx?pageid=151&secid=150

Please take note that ex Singaporean PRs who renounced their status without serving the National Service will have their job and employment pass applications greatly degraded.

CPF and Taxes:
Malaysians working under employment/work passes are exempted from paying CPF. Singapore PRs have to contribute to CPF according to the rates found here: http://mycpf.cpf.gov.sg/Employers/Gen-Info...ri/ContriRa.htm

As for the complicated tax returns, i'll just provide the website so everyone can search under their own categories. http://www.iras.gov.sg/irasHome/page01.aspx?id=88

Accomodations:
HDBs everywhere! Prime and new areas should cost around SGD600 and above per room (with or without utilities). You can still find small & cramped sub-SGD400 per room in remote or rundown areas. If you can afford the luxury, apartments and condos are the way to go. SGD1000 onwards per room is the current market price. Normally comes with swimming pool and gym facilities.

Below are some useful sites:
http://www.flatsdb.com/
http://www.hdbflat.blogspot.com/
http://singapore.roomsdb.net/
http://easyroommate.com.sg/
http://www.sg-house.com/
http://www.propertyguru.com.sg/

Transportation:
No need to describe any further. Been compared and discussed too many times between SG and MY. In SG, you can be anywhere in the island just by using public transport. The all too convenient EZ link card can be used in both MRT and bus (even McD yeah!). For places out of reach, taxi is the answer. Don't worry, you won't get touted with expensive fares. They are a bunch of professionals with accurate meters. First entry onto cab is SGD2.80 or SGD3.00. The rest runs on meter plus any surcharges from tolls, airport surcharge or stopping period. If you are travelling in group of 4, taxi is the cheaper option on certain routes compared to others.

SBS bus maps: http://www.sbstransit.com.sg/iris3/nextbus.aspx
MRT maps: http://www.smrt.com.sg/trains/images/tn_networkmap_big.jpg
Directions: http://gothere.sg/maps or http://maps.google.com.sg/

Malaysians can drive in cars/bikes to work in SG. For SG PRs, you have to drive singapore registered vehicles. More info here: http://www.lta.gov.sg/content/lta/en/motor...fsingapore.html

Expenses:
This is very subjective depending on the spending power of different individuals. But here are the basic breakdowns on rough estimates:
1. Accoms SGD600 (varies)
2. Food SGD500 (varies)
3. Transport SGD60
4. Entertainment SGD300 (strip it off if wanna save)
5. Shopping $$$

Further Information about Converting your MY license to SG license:

QUOTE(hokin @ Jul 11 2012, 08:45 AM)
Officially Malaysian converting to Singapore driving license has to 'surrender' or have their M'sian driving license revoked.

Officially there is a law that requires our Malaysian driving licence revoked if anyone would like to convert the licence to a Singapore driving licence. See the extract below from the JPJ Driver’s Education Curriculum handbook (on page 113 – 114). It does add on that one can still get back a Malaysian driving licence and that whilst holding a Singapore driving licence one can still drive a Malaysian registered car in Malaysia and Singapore.

So to say JPJ blacklist your Malaysian driving license is not correct and misguided, they are just doing their job as required by law. However many would like to keep both driving license, hence the 'extortion'.

I have a question, I'm starting work in SG this Oct, am I allowed to drive my car in SG while holding an employment pass? at least for the period when I'm not yet a PR. How much do I need to pay per month?

i got fren working in globalfoundries as equipment engineer commanding 3k++ but he has over 5 years experience. hope this info help

QUOTE(tkhoo @ Sep 28 2012, 07:11 PM)
Thanks for reply. 3k++ with 5 years exp. Good salary....

Considering that fresh grads get 2k+, I fail to see how 3k+ with FIVE years working experience can be described as "good salary."

QUOTE(winter1941 @ Sep 28 2012, 02:00 PM)
so is SD$3000 salary in SG consider low or average?

For fresh grad, considered high. For 20 years working exp, considered low.

The level of spoon feeding you expect us to do for you is amazing. Isn't it crystal clear in the link r1v3r gave how much the spouse relief is? doh.gif

Good for you as company provide car for you. For my case, I have to drive my own car (Malaysia registered) and company provide me fix car allowance of $500/ month. So I planned to stay at JB and drive in daily......Salary only $3300, still not sure grab it or not sad.gif

You DO know that it'll cost you $400/month in daily VEP charges to drive your M'sia car in, right? That's not including petrol, ERP, parking, car price/installment, maintenance, etc. Seems that a decent chunk of that $3300 will also go to the car upkeep.

In this case not so worth for non-PR to convert MY license to SG license... lol

It is not so much a story of worth it or not worth it. If you check back a page or two for the link that mackiddo gave, actually by law you are not allowed to drive in SG on a foreign license after 1 year.

30 days.

[edit] Source: MOM website, which I found on the very first link of a google search for "cancellation of EP."

i have also look into the same link before posting here. But the the first page of this thread state that ones can stay in sg for job hunting for 60 days out of every 90 days. So i wonder if this apply to EP cancellation employee as well.

60 days out of 90 days, but only maximum of 30 days in one stretch (as would be stamped on the white card). You can exit on day 30, and come back in, and be given another (up to) 30 days white card. Once that one is expired, you gotta wait 30 days outside of singapore before coming back in. exact numbers might be off a bit but you get the picture.

Is Petrus any good?
I've been to none of GR restaurant.

I haven't been to any of the top restaurants here in SG cos of the frankly prohibitive prices. Petrus, in contrast, I paid just £33.75 for set lunch (starter, main, dessert + complimentary amuse bouche, 2 side dishes, pre-dessert and petit fours). amazing value even after conversion to sgd considering any of the top places here would be at least 3digit.

Food was good, service exemplary.

Especially since I'm not the type that can save a whole lot of my salary, I like to enjoy my food  laugh.gif

I don't see how you can conclude that you should work in malaysia because of this. work in my, earn rm2.5k, eat pork noodle rm4, eat ramen rm25. work in sg, earn sgd2.5k, eat pork noodle sgd3, eat ramen sgd15. it seems to me that if you like spending, you actually can get more bang for your buck in sg rather than my.

Start in SG if you wanna build your career here. One thing very important is your network. If you start in KL, your network won't be very much useful if you wanna come SG later.

Well, the networks I built in KL were the reason why I was able to come to SG in the first place icon_idea.gif

Work in sg, get pay in sgd and stay in johor. Best combo =)

Eh, debatable. Personally I would never stay in JB/work in SG, all that extra time taken travelling isn't worth it to me. Plus JB more dangerous than SG.

Haha I passed my BTT on tuesday. But I haven't got my license extract yet, lazy to take leave to go in JB just to get extract. Probably will do the extract in KL in November when I fly back for friend's wedding.

But can i continue renting my room eventhough my ep cancelled?

Officially, you are not allowed to. Unofficially, as long as your lease is still valid, you don't tell, the landlord/agent won't know. But like what crazykid said, if you can't find job within 2 months, your 3rd month you'll pay rent for an empty room, and some more you'd then need to arrange 1 month accomodation in JB (or stay with parents).

Hi athrun, may I know more about white card 60days stay? As I know we can enter and stay in Singapore maximum for 30days and before the the last day, we can just go to JB and enter again, right? Are you mean Singapore only allow us to enter and stay in Singapore with white card maximum for 60days (mean out and in again)? May I know later how long after the 60days we can enter Singapore again with white card?

There are two limitations. Firstly, you can only stay up to maximum of 30 days at a time. Secondly, in a 90 days period, you can only stay in Singapore for a total of 60 days and must remain outside of Singapore for the remaining 30 days.

guys i have work permit right now, so that means i dun have to fill up white card the next time i go to singapore?

yes. when you enter singapore you show passport + WP/SP/EP card to immigration officer.

if you did fingerprinting process during WP formalities i think you can also use the autogate directly. I know EP can, dunno whether SP/WP can or not.

is it legal to do freelance as a permit holder in Singapore?

No it's not. If MOM finds out, they can/will/could cancel your permit.
