What do you mean by 0.8:1.0?
Is it like i getting RM5k in Malaysia then it is worth to accept the offer if I offered at least SGD4k in SG?
Sorry if I get it wrong..

From a perspective of your pay relative to your peers, the figure is (on average) about 0.83 sgd to 1.00 rm. So if you were getting rm5,000 in KL, and coming to SG on sgd4,150, you would be equally compensated in SG and in KL relative to your peers. Of course there are other factors in play such as security, safety, better infrastructure, better prospects, etc, for which it might make sense to you to accept a "lower" compensation.

Just had a HR consultant brainwashing session yesterday.

Interesting that the higher you go up the pay scale, the equivalent salary ratio gradually drops from (almost) 1.0 to (roughly) 0.65-0.70. So for those junior people coming over to SG this data seems to support the notion that you should be actually fighting for more than 0.9 sgd to 1.0 myr if you don't want to be short changed.

Perhaps it's the job titles or definition of manager / director. Some companies tend to call fairly junior supervisors, team leaders and minor managers as full fledged managers. I would put managers and above as the top 10-15% of the global employee population.

In the organisation I work in, some of the departments have ridiculous naming conventions. Fresh grad right out of college as long as got a degree already "Assistant Manager." Their seniors are "Managers" who then report to "Senior Managers." So by title only Senior Manager but by responsibility and payscale is probably just a junior management position doh.gif

Any good offer for note2 from telco there? Can i get prepaid there like in Malaysia?

Prepaid yes, but you don't get the carrier subsidy.

QUOTE(mules @ Jan 27 2013, 12:25 AM)
I think nobody play computer games here ? cause i cant find out what telco to subcribe for best latency.

I'd think there's not much difference. I'm currently on starhub 150mbps fibre, latency to WoW is around the 180-220ms range without any tunneling services.

Anyway, I just received confirmation from my future company that the application for my employment pass completed and successful, do I need to collect the pass? From who? Do I need to bring along documents to collect the pass..

Congrats and welcome to the club. The company is supposed to give you the IPA (in principal approval) letter from MOM (ministry of manpower). You print this and enter SG (do note that you still need to fill up immigration white card). Once in SG, do medical check up if necessary, then follow the instructions on the IPA to schedule the completion of formalities to get your EP card issued by MOM.

Also, PM your contact number/details to MacKiddo and ask him to add you to "the list." There's about 20 of us who meet up fairly regularly to do BBQ's, TCSS, yumcha, etc etc.

QUOTE(ameil @ Jan 29 2013, 02:31 PM)
And also, any room to let nearby Clementi mrt or boon lay mrt..?

PM yeahs4.1, this one is Boon Lay kaki and I think also looking for housemates.

Maybe you can try to apply employment pass, like no quota for employment pass.

Company decides what pass to apply for (prospective) employee leh. Employee got no say in the matter.

QUOTE(samual8833 @ Jan 29 2013, 08:51 PM)
I don't think they will give EP for us nowaday. The most possible should be WP instead of EP. Only engineers may get EP, others fields should be quite hard to get EP.

EP criteria isn't that high. degree + $3k/month job and you qualify liao. Considering you've already got 5 years work experience it shouldn't be a problem for you to get a job offer within EP range.

You are right, though, in that many companies won't bother with the trouble of hiring a foreigner unless the foreigner is very skilled or very cheap, etc etc.

Really,I thought mom to decide what pass to give and has the final say?
Why employer wanna pay extra levy while they can apply EP(zero levy&no quota) for foreigners(with degree qualification)?

Yes and no, I suppose. The company applies for a specific type of pass (WP, SPass, EP). In the application, the company can opt to tell MOM to "grant the lower pass if higher pass unsuccessful." Example the company could try to apply EP for employee, MOM might say eh EP cannot but I give SPass lah. But the company needs to initiate in the first place.

QUOTE(samual8833 @ Jan 29 2013, 11:49 PM)
Not really... Do you think that's so easy for a degree holder to get salary above 3k in SG?

As a fresh grad, maybe not. As a degree holder with FIVE years experience like yourself, you should be looking at way higher than 3k which is like ... fresh grad pay hmm.gif

My friend who is working as IT engineer/ Programming. She hold 1st class honours bachelor degree from M'sia private Uni (Vr famous with IT course) her salary is below 3K

Half the taikors posting here like seantang, mackiddo, keelim, mercury are elites earning 15-25k+++ monthly. Don't assume that Malaysians are universally low paid in SG because of your ONE friend. Although I understand how you feel cos I am low paid bank clerk as well.

1. My friend hold Master of Engineering and Bachelor Degree of Engineering from UK! He got 2 years plus experiences in engineering field at KL. He got an offer as engineer from MNC in SG!... His salary is below 3K SGD with EP!

2. Another friend hold bachelor degree from public university M'sia with 10 years experiences at KL (5 years relevant experiences to the job she applied and another 5 years from others industries)! She only got below 2K SGD job offered in SG!...

What's happening here is that you've somehow only been meeting the bottom feeders (of receiving SG job offers) and assuming everyone else is also getting that same low pay. Go check out some salary surveys to get a better idea of what Singapore salaries should be like.

QUOTE(toughnut @ Jan 31 2013, 09:08 AM)
how many of those actually really earn that >10k?  (like 120k+ per annum sweat.gif )

seantang has a secretary. anyone high rank enough to have a secretary would be earning big bucks.
keelim is in IB, and they get paid craploads of cash.
mackiddo is senior guy in O&G.

So yes, I'm sure they all earn at least 10k per month icon_idea.gif

Might as well put that 2.5K towards an instalment rather than rental.

The problem is not the installment, it is the down-payment. Vast majority of us coming over from Malaysia wouldn't have rm500k in savings lying around to plonk down on the condo, so no choice but to rent.

You have never set foot in SG and your entire knowledge of Malaysians working in SG consists of a couple of bottom feeders ... and here you are dishing out opinions about the SG labor market? rclxub.gif

True.
But with reference to the dude who posted the rant,.. if he's considering a S$2.5K++ rental, he's bound to have something stashed away or be in a position to accumulate a significant amount over the next few years.

On a whim I added up every single ringgit I've earned in the 5+ years I worked in KL before coming over to SG. After conversion, also not enough to put downpayment on a 4 room resale HDB flat haha rclxub.gif

hi, i would like to ask if i am a e pass holder, can i use the eiacs directly during custom instead of scanning at the custom officer there?
do i need the access card to pass the gate before that?
as i was told that i need to register the access card from my other friends.

no need. once you've done your fingerprinting at EPSC than can liao. just scan your passport at the auto gate and use your thumbprint. No need to even show your EP card to anybody.

From this one comment... we can confirm your friend doesn't know any Singaporean girls.

From his previous comments, it seems his friends don't know SG full stop and are bullsh*tting him left right and centre, yet he is taking their word as gospel and assuming that he is now an expert on all things SG icon_idea.gif

QUOTE(caihong @ Feb 4 2013, 11:38 AM)
But there is a label/board right before entering autogate stated... "singaporean/PR".
I asked the officer.. they said need to get access card.

Yeah, but any long term pass holder also can use it. Funny story the other day I was queue'ing at Tuas and one Singaporean lady was looking damn lost and confused, turned and asked me "eh this lane Singaporeans cannot use ah?" Cos everyone around her holding non-Singapore passport lol.

Anyway according to ICA, "With effect from 5 April 2011, ICA has ceased issuing Access Cards." So everyone now uses passport 1st page can liao, no more access cards.

QUOTE(crazy25kid @ Feb 4 2013, 11:45 AM)
probably the autogate system has yet to be updated...delay maybe as u just started work like one month?
yes, just scan the page of your passport with the pic.

QUOTE(yhoong12 @ Feb 4 2013, 12:25 PM)
That mean EP holder noneed to apply for anything but just go to the autogate and scan the passport page with pic?

Yes. Like crazy25kid and IlikePanadol shared, we can all pass the autogate using passport and we never applied for anything also. I've passed at airport, woodlands, and tuas all also no problem. Even my fiancee last time on LTVP (long term pass) also can use autogate. caihong I really got no idea why he cannot use.

need to check my wife's passport (which is older version than mine) but she can scan too.

QUOTE(yhoong12 @ Feb 4 2013, 05:06 PM)
O? is all about the biometric chip?one of my friend also cannot go thru the autogate, possible is the chip i think, how to know which year passport is useable to go thru the autogate?

the new passports that are ICAO standard or something like that have this logo:

but my previous passport without this logo (issued in april 2007, expired april 2012) also can pass through SG autogate leh.

Hi.. since we r talking on rental, and agent thingy...
Who is responsible for the agent fee? Landlord or the tenant? What's the agent fee like?
Just want to get a rough idea on these so I can know what to look into when I'm getting a room there..
Tq

QUOTE(yhoong12 @ Feb 6 2013, 08:48 AM)
normally is the tenant responsible for the agent fee, because when you find some room and called them and is agent, then it would stated agent fee there, mean you need to pay the agent to find room for you. agent fee mostly is half month rental of the room. this is only one time payment.

Not entirely accurate. Normal practice in SG is that two agents are involved, the "landlord's agent" and the "tenant's agent." The typical agent fee is 1 month per year of contract (so if you sign a 2 year contract they would charge 2 months), shared between both agents, for which the tenant pays half to his agent, and the landlord pays half to his agent.
