Fuji X-E1 with 18-55 and 23 f1.4 lens kit is another good option and will
probably cost rm2k less than RX1. But if money is not an issue than
RX1 is a very compact alternative to SLR smile.gif

Buying this will depends whether u want a small size FF or u prefer the D600 DSLR size FF. But i think the latter one will be better for now.

Sony camera can just buy second revise version which most likely gonna release a year later with all the problem settle. First of its type is always for BETA tester.

U prefer 50 over 35 in which view? Crop or actual 35mm format? U spend a bit more to get the Leica 35 lens. Here u get the 35 AND the sensor in a single package, and also it's slightly cheaper than the Leica 35 lens. Not to mention the advance technology in the Sony. Leicas have never been known for its added on values. Eg. in camera functions.

actually if there's only 1 choice, 35mm is a much more versatile focal length. if you're worrying about not close enough to the subject and capturing less details, do check out the samples on flickr. the detail resolved all the way down to the pixel level, even if you crop out 50% also got quite a lot of details. biggrin.gif

also, if for the sake of changeable lens, i'm not going to pay extra RM20,000++ for that... sweat.gif

poison indeed..... but this poison too far from my reach..... not that cant afford it just dont feel right if i spend so many money on it.

Yup like you guys said Sony camera do pawn Leica in terms of the technology..... Leica is just too expensive.....
But i think spending so much money on a Full frame with only 35mm.... maybe 1 year later we get Sony RX-pro1 like Fuji X100 -> fuji xpro-1....
i believe it can be done.... since they already downsized the FF camera that much. Just that they will need to reboot their lens all over again like what Fuji is doing.

actually now more user shots posted and i think it ain't that bad at all. biggrin.gif

by the way, tested this monster at Sony KLCC, freakin damn this thing is POISON!! did a few test shots and damn this thing take sharp shots!

what i liked:
- sharp images!
- nice focus peaking, automatically magnify upon turning the ring and back to normal after 2 sec (can be changed) or half press shutter
- manual controls
- considerably small size for what it is
- very nice 3D feel to the image, not just the bokeh

what i dislike:
- built in flash cannot be tilted up at all, can only fire straight on. sad.gif
- manual focus ring seems react slow to my taste, need to turn quite a bit to cover the whole range
- macro ring seems easily missed when needed, can't feel where it is often
- focus peaking is forced to enter magnified view, although that's not really disadvantages
- price, price, and price! (including the accessories!)

all in all a great camera. the only thing that i consider deal breaker is the built in flash cannot be tilted up (although the sensor/lens performance make up for it), and of course, the price! sweat.gif

but still using flash can override the lighting a little which can be useful.

oh and i missed out an important point, the sharpness of longer focus range seems to decrease conpared to closer range. seems like the lens will excel on closer object but not as sharp for landscape. hmm.gif

pretty nice price if you ask me, but still if import from US will be cheaper and still lower than RM9k although without card and case.

i think it's more reasonable if the price come down to RM9000. hmm.gif

main-main with RX1 @ KLCC more today, brought my memory card.

the bad - was frustrated with the focus when using it, it's tricky to get a focus combining with the 2m-3.5m macro mode and 3m-∞ mode. and even under decent lighting, it's not easy to get a focus lock with larger aperture. and again the same issue with MF, need to turn the ring more than i'd like so keep shaking the camera/lens in magnified mode and hard to see what's going on on the live view. i've used lens with mechanical focus ring on canon 60D and it's just so much easier to get a focus. didn't get to test the flash, going to expect the result for straight fill flash and it just can't do bounce as the angle is fully locked.

the good - well, shit my pants with i brought home the files and view it on my laptop. drool.gif pull the highlights, mmm~ lots of details recovered, and no harsh artifacts detected. push the shadows and lots of details but not much noise. i really like what i see on the noise patterns, very similar to my Nikon V1 which is film-like but more details and less (and finer) noise/grains. used OM-D before and didn't like the noise pattern at all, very "harsh" to me. and first time i didn't need to touch any of the fancy parameters like vibrancy, saturation, clarity, the image is just "there". a little sharpening helps bring out the details but very easy to get over-sharpen since it's already very sharp to begin with. also, like my V1, it's able to fix aperture/shutter speed and let the ISO do the exposure, very easy to use.

all in all, one heck of camera. however, due to the difficulties of getting a focus of the focus ring, and not so reliable AF, rendering the camera much less intuitive to use. no love at first use at this point. at the price point, and disappointed with limiting the flash angle (why not make it like RX100?!?), i don't think i'm going to save money for it until Sony come out with a successor with improved design - tilt-up flash, on-sensor PDAF, more responsive focus ring (via firmware), and bring the price a little lower, i'll save up and buy it. biggrin.gif

anyways, here're some SOOC jpegs, so beautiful that i don't need to tweak anything (although might have awkward setting cause still exploring with the camera's menu):

and here's SOOC jpeg vs RAW. didn't edit much on the RAW, just highlights/shadows and mild sharpening/NR, colors are as is and to me eyes it's spot on:

sweat.gif Why the raw not much difference from the SOOC. Did you just convert it from RAW without any adjustment? No shadow, exposure or highlight adjustment? Do you use lightroom or photoshop?

pay attention to the person on the right, jeans is completely black but is visible on edited version. then in the middle of the frame, the person with backpack and the lady blended with the black background, and recovered. then the display lights around the LCDs in the far background. overall not so contrasty compared to jpeg. i'm doing this on an ISO 1250 shot and still not seeing a lot of noise. to me it's marvelous. biggrin.gif

woah don't get too excited, the price in yen is right beside the RM. brows.gif

the price is just the current street price you can get every where in Japan. some online shop can sell lower than that by 15,000 to 20,000yen off!

Just an question here whether we able to choose 12bit or 14bit RAW files or its by default 14bit? But if there is no options to choose how able to determine that it's true 14bit without the use of any lab measurement ? I don't seek for the differ but as claim that it's 14bit raw I believe the Sony A99 will be the same?

It depends on what you want?

I think through optical view finder you're most probably need hyper focal distance!

Which I do most on the Leica.. focusing might miss the moment!

Got my RX1 few months back and did not have any chance to try it out fully. Took a few shots with my kids but mostly OOF. I notice this camera has slower auto focus hence taking kid pictures is difficult, often OOF or miss the moment. But if manage to take the right moment and focus, the picture is very sharp and clear, not to mention the ISO up to 12800 is ok to use.

Bought a few accessories with the camera ready for my overseas trip.

Thanks.

Hmmm.. can't really blame it

With such a wide aperture I guess the glass is much heavier, even a nikon d4 and 35 1.4g focuses real slow..

I love the rx1 alot its awesome to bring it wherever I go compared to my other cameras

Sony reveals AA-filter-less Cyber-shot DSC-RX1R

The new Cyber-shot RX1R full-frame compact camera is designed to satisfy even the most critical photographer’s desire for sharper, more detailed pictures and enhanced resolution. The model’s ‘R’ suffix denotes a further improvement in the pocket-sized camera’s already spectacular resolution.
In common with many digital cameras, the original Cyber-shot RX1 camera features a multi-segment optical low-pass filter (OLPF) in front of the sensor to suppress unwanted moiré and color artifacts. The enthusiast-oriented RX1R model removes this low-pass filter to realize the full resolution potential of the image sensor and bring new levels of realism to landscapes and other finely-detailed subjects.

Additionally, to take advantage of the OLPF removal, the camera’s processing functions have been optimized to maintain image sharpness without compromising lens/sensor performance.

While weight and dimensions remain the same as the ground-breaking DSC-RX1, the special edition RX1R is also now compatible with TRILUMINOS Color technology, allowing for the ultimate image playback experience on compatible BRAVIA televisions.

do a search in garage sale, but most are cash price, you gotta add 5% for epp. not quite worth it cause it's more than rm400 just for the fee...

the 55mm with 36mp is tempting, but so far i like what i can get from RX1R, and body+lens weight of RX1 already equal to body weight of A7, and i bring my RX1R with me often and doesn't feel i add much weight inside my bag. my upcoming trip involve walking whole day with camera/ipad/bottle of water inside my bag so i want to go as light as possible. also, 35mm is already slightly narrow for what i shoot (food, buildings, a bit of landscape), cannot imagine anything more narrow (and the 35mm f2.8 seems overpriced and not as good as the RX1 combo).

also, i love shooting in restaurant, my previous trip involved a lot of crowded (yet quiet) restaurants so silent shutter sound is always a huge plus. biggrin.gif

Question: Does RX1 focus continuously like in video mode? I mean without using Servo focusing and without pressing the shutter button, will it keep pre-focusing?

no constant focus, you'll have to press the shutter button. in fact, they actually drop the AF-C thing altogether so no AF tracking when you half press and hold the shutter button (i could be wrong but i couldn't find any setting that enable the AF-C).

the RX1 image on the first page is the early leaked image, and they took out the "C" which is AF-C.

food shots with RX1R. very happy with the jpegs, all these are with minimum processing - white balance, tonal adjustments, and cropping, some added vignetting. very happy with the rich color without touching any saturations. biggrin.gif

these are just snap shots, no preparation, hence the messy framing lol.

I'm poisoned but waiting for RX1 price drop. Not happening soon! At this moment, only with RX100 which I'm 90% satisfied. Hehe.

Btw I was a Canon user before this.

Dunno lah. 8k still quite high. Was hoping it drops in price similar to RX100 (2499 to 1699 now ie about 30% drop). So RX1's 9999 shud be 6799. Jahat lah Sony nie :-)

i don't think it's possible unless RX1 mark ii come out. even now in US RX1 used still going around $1800 so don't expect to see it dropping that low any sooner. afterall it's FF and the lens alone at least RM3000+ for that kind of quality.

seeing the a7r 36mp so nice, i'm lusting for the RX1 mark ii instead lol. i'm not into lens changing cause i don't find the need, and i don't like loud shutter as a food hunter cause during my travel to Tokyo some of the restaurant are packed with patrons and they're quiet eaters... biggrin.gif

Yeap. Not into changing lenses either. All these whiles, I've been using regular P&S with small sensor. Then Canon S90 with slightly bigger sensor. Then RX100 with even bigger sensor. RX1 seems like the ultimate target. All these have some things in common: (1) relatively cheaper without adding lense (2) much easier to carry around (3) decent IQ except for RX1 which is mindblowing :-)

spot on. also i always wondering why people can praise fuji x100 so much yet regard RX1 as highly limiting. in fact the lens at f2 already damn sharp (although doesn't mean much cause thin DOF means most area are OOF) and highly useable, the difference in quality vs the x100(s) reflected in the price and definitely reasonably priced IMHO.

by the way, any RX1 owner experienced paint scraping off on the lens barrel? mine already got tiny dot scraped off the aperture ring by my fingernail cause the grip pad is so near the lens, although very difficult to see. at first so sad leh less than a minth old but then eventually got over it cause it'll bound to happen sooner or later cause saw quite a few RX1 for sale also like that on the lens barrel and especially on the edge of focus ring. saw the two demo unit at KLPF are worse, the edge of the focus ring faded here and there due to heavy handling (careful not to knock the focus ring, seems like made of plastic). hmm.gif

Where got ppl praising X100s? Maybe coz it's cheaper so more ppl own. More people own = more noise. Hehe.

RX1 is highly regarded in dpreview forum. Maybe not so much in LYN due to less users. Even RX100 forum on LYN is more active with lots of samples, complaints and praises.

In summary: X100s = cheaper = more ppl bought. In term of IQ, not fair to compare since one is using APS-C and another is FF sensor.

Anyone selling 2nd hand RX1, PM me! Hehe

it's pretty natural for people to overlook the IQ when they look at the price alone, and RM9000 for a camera is heck of a money when it's not even a semi-pro like the a7. every time i look at the images captured with this camera i quickly forget about the price i paid cause i get what i paid for. biggrin.gif

if you want to get a second hand you can pay close attention to eBay as the a7 is causing some impact on RX1 price. eBay will be more expensive though due to eBay PayPal fee, if you brave enough can try forums like Fred Miranda, they can sell like $2000+ together with EVF some more lol.

EDIT: this one starts really low for mint condition and EVF although can shoot up to $2000...

thanks for the info bro se7en, seems like the lens is fated to have paint scraping, i think i need not baby the camera cause it'll happen anyway and use the camera more carefree. your post somehow made me feel better cause i find that being too careful with the camera making it difficult to enjoy lol. biggrin.gif

i tried the hybrid VF on xpro1 during KLPF and definitely can see why people love them so much, but any VF will inevitably add bulk to the camera. can be very nice to have on the RX1 though cause i did find the RX1 battery life to be quite short though still can last whole day if i'm to shoot 100-200 shots, OVF can save a lot of battery juice.

i also hope they'll put the mighty 36mp sensor into future RX1. but at the same time i also hope they'll stick to 24mp with improved tech cause 24mp is a sweet spot for me, not too big files, but plenty of details. i would choose even better ISO performance (than current RX1) over 36mp. hmm.gif

Yeah I've been watching ebay lately. Need to budget RM5k or 6k even for 2nd hand. Hopefully goes lower in next few months. For RX100, I bought at Sony Centre coz .... ahemmmm ... affordable. By same virtue, I shud get RX1 from Sony also coz warranty coverage. But not ready to part with 8-9k yet *cry*

X100s vs RX1 - in terms of raw detail in IQ, hands down RX1. However, X100s with the X-Trans sensor edges ahead after IS0 3200 where RX1 image begin to introduce noise even in good lighting condition while the noise level of X100s is pretty much noiseless up to 6400. In good day light, I have no reservation going with RX1/R but in low light/challenging light situations, like restaurants and gatherings in the evening, X100s is the go to for me.

i heard that if buy from sony center they actually allow one to one exchange instead of warranty if anything goes wrong within the first week, and able to purchase extended warranty. otherwise dealers usually offer much lower price. hmm.gif

yup the x-trans is very good at high ISO but seeing many samples all over the internet i'm still convinced that even RX1 has more noise grains it still retain that 3D look. i almost went for the x-trans but decided to wait a little longer and gather more x-trans samples to compare.

in fact, the RX1R has more intelligent noise reduction in jpeg engine and i'm seeing much more details and keeping the noise low on places with less details. also i see better color gradation due to the large sensor. i saw some high ISO shots from x-trans it look flatter and lacking fine color gradations, so i'm convinced to straight go for the FF sensor. biggrin.gif

sure but it'll appear as a small white dot, it's only a tiny dot that will be easily mistaken as dust in person or on photo, but the metal beneath will reflect light.

I agree that X-Trans sensor high ISO is very good..but only on JPEG..when u compare RAW files from both..X-trans falls behind..RX1 can be very noisy as well but details never lost..and wide open..X100s just too soft and hazy..start to look sharp at f/2.8 but X100s still for me the best camera below 3.5k..i really really hope sony will release 2 version of the next RX1..one with 50mm f/2 and one with 24mm f/2.8..24mm or 28mm highly possible..but 50mm i don't think so since we have Zeiss 55m for FE.. the new FE 35mm f/2.8 can't beat RX1 35mm f/2..at 2.8..RX1 still sharper corner to corner..the reason why i will keep my RX1 is 1) very discreet 2) leaf shutter 3)Amazing 35mm sonnar design with superb micro-contrast....

but even if it'll ever happen, most likely will be f2.8, f2...will be too big. biggrin.gif have a strong feeling though sony will still update the RX1 the way x100 did - upgrade sensor and focus, think they'll wait until their sensor tech to improve significantly before updating it. hmm.gif

actually even if it's not local set, still a great price and if you're concerned about the LCD scratches it's not expensive to replace (i guess). biggrin.gif

well, if you can read japanese or memorize all the menus. japanese units only have japanese language in menu, there's *NO WAY* you can flash the firmware or install english menu. i would have bought one when i went to japan earlier this year but don't want to deal with japanese menu (although i grew up with japanese games and complete the RPG without understanding much). sad.gif

Thx little ice for your input. Good point about Japanese-only menu. Anyway, since rakuten is now like the amazon.com of Japan, I think the sellers start to notice interests from overseas purchasers and may have though about the English-menu offerings. But that's a good point to note!

japanese units are made for locals so that's why they're cheaper than anywhere else, they do have international version but expect to be at least same price as US. i was like you trying to save every penny as possible to get this camera, in the end i just bite the bullet and buy local unit for the sake of warranty.

it's either you go for local unit (or wait for price drop if you will), or go for cheap cheap 2nd hand unit. if i haven't bought one, i would have snatch that RX1 in garage sale as it's VERY low - given that there wasn't any mechanical failure and in 100% working condition.

that's exactly the reason why i went for it despite knowing the a7 is around the corner, it's just not easy to create an ILC that's as small as the RX1. biggrin.gif

ISO 6400 is not that bad on RX1..especially when u shoot RAW..noisy but resolution still good..D4 sensor still the best high ISO FF sensor..

Yes, it is noisy but details are there. D4 is the king...guess now together with Df. I still do find Fuji X-Sensor noise control is the best, APS-C or FF inclusive....again, except D4.

Yup, can't agree with you more. Now I am staying put with my existing mirrorless systems (m4/3 and APS-C) + RX1. It all fit into my shoulder bag. Can't complain.

After seeing many sample images of A7/r...quite tempting at 1st but i still satisfy on RX1/r images quality which i think on par with Leica

For me whose not a pro, I will keep this for long time unless i wanna play around other focus length.

Expect probably to get 1/2 of what you have paid for the Rx1 now that the A7/A7r is on the market.

Preliminary observations I got from the

(a)35Summilux+A7R vs (b)RX1R+35F2

shows that (a) has more of that "3D pop" and smoother bokeh, but (b) has those uniform sharpness corner to corner and that nice "grain" look that I prefer compared to the noise on (a). (a) has details but comes with the price of not so nice looking "noise", very coarse looking noise. (b) still has noise, but the noise is in the form of "grainy look" that I like. (a) still prone to CA, (b) is virtually free. If you do a lot of portrait on 35mm, I prefer (a)'s look than (b), the micro-contrast and 3D contrast is very revealing, almost in-your-face in fact. If you do landscape, I prefer (b) over (a) for that corner to corner sharpness. (a) is still king in lowlight (no-brainer there), and when push comes to shove and I know that I had to go into situations where I need to push it wide open, I still go for (a). *i hate flash btw*

Different rendering for different looks. Don't ask me to choose please. They're unique characteristically.

Other well known website had discussed it before.
I think you can only check the shutter count number via file number.
However, it can be reset....

Thanks for the compliment! biggrin.gif

I'll have to give most credits to the camera, because the RAW files has so much headroom to play around and so malleable that you can go heavy handed and still look 3D. The rest are pretty much some of my best shots, I shot a lot and not all are nice. sweat.gif

Most are pretty much just LR touchup, some I spend more time on e.g. the 4th one which the white balance was off initially and lighting a little tricky where the gate is actually underexposed. The last one is in camera HDR + manual panorama stitch (3 shots) using PS auto stitch then crop and touch up in LR, could've done it better with manual HDR as the white balance was slightly off on 3 of them although I locked the exposure setting.

Actually, some I didn't even touch anything, and use the jpeg (I shoot jpeg+RAW). The person sitting on bench I think I mostly didn't touch, just rotate a little I think. Like this one is OOC and just import to LR and put slight vignetting:

I find that when I'm "limited" with my gear, I'll learn how to do tricks on getting the shots I want. Actually from where I stand, it wasn't possible to capture the whole thing even with the widest lens (and fisheye would give you that...fisheye look), so I opted panorama + HDR. Fortunately there isn't any need to deal with moving objects, so I was taking my time to plan my shot. It's the planning part that's fun! biggrin.gif

Edited: Upon a second thought, it is possible to capture everything in vertical shot with wide angle lens...but panorama can capture much more details. biggrin.gif

Dynamic Range of sensors are so good these days, the shots just turn out amazing.

It doesn't look HDR to me because the D750's output is like what you show so. biggrin.gif Nikon's using sensor made by Sony anyway.

Those RX1 are awesome stuff, I love it the first time I tested it and well, just that the price is a killer.

Yup, that price! But as me, to be able to bring back such photo, it's all worth it. And it's the lens and body combo that's unique, I can literally crop the hell out of the frame and still get fantastic details, and it always has that organic look to the shots, as I read some member mentioned it - it felt like I'm looking at the actual scene in person. thumbup.gif

Haha, the system is not that fast yet la.. Especially is manually sending out confirmation letter. tongue.gif However, no worries about that. Once you registered, you are eligible to join the sales. wink.gif The email should be sending out by today before evening. laugh.gif

Shashinkin selling import set at RM6658 for a brand new RX1R

I saw this too in their website. It says 1 year warranty from Shashinki.

My 1st Sony was RX100 M1 after years with Canon. Bought it in Apr'13 and for some reason, I added 200 for additional 2-yr warranty. The sensor failed recently (Nov'14) and I sent it back to Foto Shangrila in mid Dec'14. Not sure when I'll get it back. Will follow up.

If I get this RX1R (always been my dream camera), I'm afraid something similar could happen. I know I shouldn't make generalization about Sony product longevity but RM6,500 is quite a big amount if something similar to RX100 M1 happens to my RX1R after 1.5 years.

Hmmm .. confused.

Yes, I don't mind Shashinki's or Sony's warranty. Both are OK. Like you said, makan sendiri after >1 year lah, bit scary : )

Btw, my RX100m1 now under "3rd party" warranty repair which probably will take ages but given my guestimate they had to change the sensor, if I have to makan sendiri, better just buy another RX100 which is so cheap nowadays.
