Granite stains easily. I think mine not sealed. Next time I will go for quartz but I don't like the price.
Color choice is limited to dark colors for granite so if you are out of luck if you want something white

If your granite is not sealed then no wonder it stains easily. How come your supplier didn't seal it for you? I thought it is standard procedure.

My granite tops are sealed and I have little problem with staining.

Who said granite is only limited to dark colours? You can get other colours, but yes there is no pure white for granite but there is a nice white & gray granite (can't remember the name now).

Was told by the staff at Signature Kitchen that Granite/Quartz will absorb some moisture and transmit it to the base cabinet. This will make the base cabinet a bit smelly.. Anyone can vouch to this??

I've not experienced this in my kitchen.

i never know granite has to be sealed. does it mean the installer has to apply a coat of sealer after installation?

It does depend on the type of granite. Some are non-porous. Have a read here:

http://home.howstuffworks.com/home-improve...ountertops3.htm

Ask the supplier if Emerald Pearl needs sealing or not.

That's what I wondering too.

In all my thought, granite should be more expensive than medium quality solid surface hardtop and quartz is a little bit higher than granite. I have other KC co provide me such quotation.

But for Unity, the solid surface is not a cheap price and hence just top up a little bit to get Granite and Quartz, thats confuse me too because in my mind, granite should be more solid and heat resistant and quartz is more good looking with lil shiny top....

I planning to get only solid surface for my dry kitchen because it may a lot cheaper compare to granite and quartz, but surprise that it just top up RM 350 to get granite or quartz. Ya, the SA also pushing for the Quartz.

Any bro can share idea which is better for dry kitchen with oven? Solid surface is 8k and if with granite or quartz, just add on RM 350 to get it ....

Even for solid surface there are different brands and quality. Maybe the solid surface they are selling is the more expensive type, so the price diff vs granite is quite small.

Of course even for granite there are different prices (depending on which type/color you get). So to do better comparison ask for full details of their solid surface and their granite. Then do some research on the net.

I do personally prefer solid surface but granite/quartz is more premium in looking
*
Why do you prefer solid surface?

I know one benefit of solid surface is that they can polish out the joins, so that if you have a large countertop (made with several pieces) it can look seamless.

Hi there, just wondering how would the quotation be like if I'm looking at a larger slab (3ft width) for a kitchen island? Is there a separate sq ft run quotation for a larger width?

Thanks in advance.

You would probably need to contact a supplier and get a custom quote. For larger widths there is more wastage, hence the rate might be different.

Hi,
Share with you my research on the price per foot run (i.e. 1ft x 2ft) for Granite & Quartz in Melaka:
1. Emerald Pearl or Blue Pearl Granite (both from Norway): RM160
2. Black Galaxy Granite:  RM140
3. Russian Diamond Granite: RM330 (only 1 shop has this granite stock; other shops used to sell at ~RM170 ... stocks are rare)

4. Silver Black Quartz: RM140

If you go for premium Feruni tiles 600mm x 600mm (for example Aludra Black AL81NN which is quite close resembling the Black Galaxy Granite) as countertop, you only pay ~10% of the Granite or Quartz countertop cost !
*
Seems like a good rate.

Does the granite quote include any fascia and backsplash?

Also how much do they charge for opening hole (for the sink)?

Here in Perak I got quoted RM160 per foot run for Black Galaxy. This is for the 24" main surface + 3.5" fascia + 3" backsplash. Sink opening hole is included.

The fascia and backplash size (if you want it) will make a difference in price, plus also the edge finishing as you mentioned.

Hi guys,

can refer to the link below for the picture?
The developer has provided the sink counter top with tiles.. but refer to the picture in link below, once the tiles is wet, no matter how u wipe them, the water stain can be seen and really unsightly to me.

can anyone share what is the problem with this? and what is the way to improve this?
anything can be added (by polishing or something) to prevent this from happening.
*
Hmm... from the pictures it looks like your tile is unpolished or has some kind of matt finish. Usually if the tile is polished, the water will just bead on top and not be absorbed into the tile.

You can try to buy a waterproofing coating to apply on top of your tiles.

Silestone price can varies greatly from 300-900. Mine is on the lower end ... Roughly RM350 pfr. Combined my wet and dry kitchen that was equivalent to 37ft run which turned out to be around 13k. That was more than 10 years ago (pic below)

My Silestone after so many years still like new. That's why I am using Silestone again for my new house

Good to know your Silestone countertop has lasted many years.

I chose granite (black galaxy) for my countertops and it's been 12 years now. I won't say it looks like new (because some of the shine & lustre is not like new), but it has remained stain free and still looks good. Of course the dark color helps too.

That is not to say all granite is good. I've seen a light color one called Barry White and that one I wouldn't suggest for countertops.
