hi HiVi fans,

i own a pair of D1010MKII speakers, and for the past year or so they started making this hum/buzzing noise. it was faint enough that i could live with it (playing any music easily drowns it out), but over the past week the noise has gradually gotten louder and louder. today, i tried powering the speakers off and turning them back on again, and it has gotten even louder now. like... really LOUD!

the other symptoms i can describe here is that the volume control has no effect on the level of hum/buzzing, and also the noise is present even without any audio inputs.

i have zero electronic experience, and was unfortunately not able to find any resource online about this problem or how to repair it. i was wondering if somebody on this forum has some idea what could be failing here, and perhaps lead me in the right direction on how to get it fixed. smile.gif

would really appreciate the help so much. thanks in advance!!

You have removed all the audio input connector from the back of the speaker and still have buzzing sound? Then possibly the internal board or amp that causing the sound.

hi thanks for responding. yeah, the buzzing sound is there even with all audio inputs disconnected. also, turnting the volume up or down has no effect on the buzzing sound.

if it is an internal board or amp issue, is it an easy repair job in your opinion? just wondering if it is worth repairing, or should i just retire this speaker and find a new one? 🙏

thanks for the advice bro. appreciate u taking the time. smile.gif

nope, it's definitely nothing external that's causing the buzzing. i've changed cables, disconnected cables, changed location. ruled everything out, so it's very likely an internal issue.

problem is not sure where to send something like this for "reputable" repair these days. i know a few electronics shop that repair A to Z, but not sure if they know how to handle good speakers properly. confused.gif

Try downloading a frequency app on your phone and check the buzzing is what frequency. If it is 50Hz then that's the mains power frequency and something could be wrong with the speaker power supply filtering. It happens sometimes.

thanks for the advice bro! thumbsup.gif

i managed to download an app and the result is 500Hz (hope i'm reading it correctly). i attached the screenshot below.

does this mean that it is a power supply filtering issue? not really sure what that means, but is it something that is fairly easy to repair? appreciate the advice. notworthy.gif

also, here's a video of the buzzing issue ---> https://streamable.com/l5hifa

That sounds like mains frequency.

Maybe my app idea wasn’t a good one since it cannot isolate it.

It could be the mains frequency failing to be smoothed by the power supply filtering stage but there are other possibilities.
The challenge to repair speakers like this is the amount of glue they use on components. Sometimes they’re not repairable.

One of the shops around jalan pudu probably can take a look at it

thanks for the feedback. i ended up taking it to this A to Z electronics repair shop. the guy seems to have some experience with speakers and TVs. RM30 to diagnose so no harm i guess. wish me luck!

will update my results. smile.gif

hey man, really sorry for such a late reply. totally forgot to update this thread. unfortunately, my D1010MKII speakers are probably in a junkyard or laying in a scrap heap somewhere. i threw them away!

the electronics shop i sent them to for repair turned out to be run by a complete idiot. he did not get rid of the buzzing, and totally messed up the sound quality of the speakers in the process. so he actually made them worse! bangwall.gif

i figured it was time to give them up anyway. they had a good run, and i tried what i could to bring them back to life.

thanks for following up tho, i appreciate this forum! thumbsup.gif
