PASIR GUDANG: The Johor state government will levy a processing fee on foreigners who buy properties in the Malaysian state from next year.

Bernama news agency quoted State Executive Councillor for Housing and Local Government Abdul Latiff Bandi as saying that the fee will be based on the property value.

Currently, foreign buyers pay only RM10,000 as processing fee.

Mr Abdul Latiff said the new processing fee of between four and five per cent of the property value enables the state government to control the sale of properties to foreigners.

"For instance, foreigners buying a property worth RM5 million, they have to pay only RM10,000 as processing fee currently. From next year, they have to pay based on the property value," he told a media conference after opening a seminar on Green Industry 2013 on Monday.

Mr Abdul Latiff said proceeds from the processing fee will be used for projects and programmes towards the people's development.

GE Summit: PM announces one-stop centre for creative industry in Cyberjaya

KUALA LUMPUR: A one-stop centre to support companies involved in creative multimedia, research and development, outsourcing and data management will be set up in Cyberjaya.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced the setting up of the Malaysian Global Innovation and Creative Centre (MaGIC) as part of the Government's latest effort to enhance entrepreneurship.

"The centre will be a one-stop shop for entrepreneurs, with everything from getting financing from banks or venture capital to incubators for developing start-ups, from intellectual property registration to facilities for training, coaching and mentoring," he said.

Malaysia will also be hosting the 5th Global Social Business Summit next month, he said at the launch of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) here Friday.

Najib added that he was looking forward to receiving creative solutions from the Global Startup Youth programme, which is part of the GES.

The programme pairs some 500 young people with 100 mentors to look into some of the world's most pressing problems, he said.

Later, Najib launched the 1Malaysia Entrepreneurship programme (1Met), which will help to accelerate the growth of 5,000 young entrepreneurs annually.

"Please dream. Please dream big. Be audacious. Dream of the improbable.

"The future is exciting. The future is today. The future is right now," Najib told a cheering crowd of thousands of youths.

During a question and answer session, Najib was asked if there would be a special allocation for the 1Met programme.

"Yes, the answer is yes. I will announce it in the coming Budget 2014. I can announce it today, but that will be letting the cat out of the bag," he said.

To another question, Najib agreed that holding a gathering of global entrepreneurs from time-to-time was a great idea to improve entrepreneurship in Malaysia.

US Secretary of State John Kerry, who was with Najib at the 1Met launch, told the audience that the United States would provide a means for collaboration between America and entrepreneurs in South East Asia.

He said there will be a partnership between the US and UP Global to train half a million entrepreneurs around the world, including those in Malaysia.

He also announced Beehive Malaysia, a collaborative space for social entrepreneurs to find solutions to great problems.

Earlier, Najib said entrepreneurs and potential businessmen should not be afraid or discouraged by failure, but instead use the experience to spur themselves to success.

He said the Government continuously worked on providing a better environment for entrepreneurship, and hoped that entrepreneurs would re-calibrate their attitude to failure.

"In a culture defined by a freewheeling and audacious capitalism, a country like the United States, which draws on a history of both liberty and plenty, a failed business gambit is seen as useful experience. Failure is not a death sentence.

"Other countries have different traditions, but the principle of encouraging people to attempt the improbable, without the undue fear of failure, can be more widely adopted."

In Malaysia, Najib said bankruptcy laws could be reviewed and streamlined to strengthen the safety net that allowed entrepreneurs to bounce back.

KUALA LUMPUR: The establishment of Malaysian Global Innovation and Creative Centre (MaGIC) will see more collaboration between Malaysia and the United States to further boost entrepreneurial spirit among youths, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.
Announcing the new initiative, Najib said the centre will be located in Cyberjaya, where companies are involved in creative multimedia, research and development, outsourcing and data management.
Speaking at the opening of the 4th Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) here, Najib said the centre will be a one-stop shop for entrepreneurs, with everything from getting financing from banks or venture capital to incubators for developing start-ups; from intellectual property registration to facilities for training, coaching and mentoring.
“I would like the centre to work very closely on a partnership with the global upscale entrepreneurship centre that was mentioned by the US Secretary of State John Kerry in his address,” he told some 4,700 delegates coming from over 100 countries to the two-day summit.
Earlier, Kerry said the United States would initiate a new programme called ‘Up Global’, which will support and train half a million entrepreneurs in 1,000 cities around the world, including Malaysia, over the next few years.
The programme is set to encourage more young and new talents and developing sustainable and exciting ventures.
Najib, who is also the Finance Minister, announced that Malaysia would be hosting the 5th Global Social Business Summit next month.

“I look forward to receiving their creative solutions (and) I’m sure I will be inspired and hope to know how to turn my hair from grey to black,” he said in jest. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has announced the establishment of the Malaysian Global Innovation and Creative Centre or MaGIC in Cyberjaya to encourage entrepreneurship among Malaysians.

He said in his speech at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit 2013 that the centre would be a “one-stop shop” for entrepreneurs in getting financing from banks or venture capitalists and also to serve as incubators for developing start-ups.

The centre would also help prospective entrepreneurs with intellectual property registration and facilities for training, coaching and mentoring, Najib added.

“Ideas and opportunities cannot travel through a vacuum - they must be born in an open, market-driven environment that welcomes them, nurtures them, (and) allows them to flourish and spread.

“Creating an eco-system in which ideas can be realised is one of the pre-conditions for success,” he said.

Najib also noted that Governments should play an active role in supporting research, irrespective of whether it had an immediate commercial application or not, and not hesitate to work closely with industry to promote innovation.

“Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute’s joint applied research ventures between business and the state provide one model for successful co-operation across the traditional sector divide,” he said.

In relation to this, he also suggested that higher learning institutions devote more time and funding to spin-offs, which can bridge the gap between research and commercialisation.

Entrepreneurs Can Expect "Magic" Boost

By GES Team

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 11 (Bernama) -- The proposed establishment of the Malaysian Global Innovation and Creative Centre (MaGIC), will provide a proper platform for entrepreneurs to expand their wings.

Multimedia Development Corporation Chief Executive Officer Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said MaGIC, to be located at Cyberjaya, was primed to unite the country's next generation of entrepreneurs.

"Entrepreneurs can also obtain consultation services and witness government initiative in enhancing the quality of local entrepreneurs," he told Bernama on the sideline of GES 2013 here Friday.

MaGIC, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today at the Fourth Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) 2013, will be a one-stop shop where entrepreneurs could access financing from banks or venture capital, incubators for developing start-ups, intellectual property registration, as well as, facilities for training, coaching and mentoring.

The initiative is also slated to improve and strengthen government and entrepreneurs' relationship.

Malaysian entrepreneur, Gerald Daniel, who helms First Billenium Sdn Bhd which developed mobile applications, said while the government had always been supportive of local entrepreneurs, they, however, found it difficult to tap the initiatives.

"The MaGIC initiative can definitely improve that," Daniel added.

For Ariivazhagan Supramaniam, Chief Executive Officer of Robin Capital Sdn Bhd, the most important thing was to facilitate entrepreneurs with the right policies, access to finance and continuous support to grow their business.

"I think government procurement is an important area where they have to take risk to test these entrepreneurs because that would create market confidence and allow the commercial side to come in," he said.

DFRAN Research Technologies Sdn Bhd Executive Chairman Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir described the move to establish MaGIC as being in line with the current situation where a majority of innovative ideas from developed nations came from young entrepreneurs.

"It is important for Malaysia to provide an ecosystem, in which innovative and creative young people have the opportunity to become a new entrepreneur," Syed Zainal said.

The former Managing Director of Proton Holdings Bhd hoped the initiative would be followed by right implementation.

Meanwhile, foreign delegates described MaGIC as a fantastic idea.

Among them was the Business Development Manager of Technology Innovation Agency from South Africa Dr Muhammed Sayed who pointed out that having a one stop centre was an excellent idea as a lot of countries have fragmented efforts that frustrated entrepreneurs.

Egle Vinauskaite, a delegate from Lithuania, was confident the initiative would succeed.

"Malaysia is doing a great work. In the last few years there's a lot of entrepreneurship programmes, workshops and mentorship's, they all worked. It makes a great impact because people especially youths realised their own potential and I think that's really a positive thing," she said.
