do not estimate a Mesmer ability, they can do crazy amount of damage while supporting your teammate to kill opponent and without hurting yourself. super escape artist with phantasm,clone,invisible and chaos armor as well as teleporter. Mesmer is not a dps burst class, you will not see big number damage and few shot to kill your enemy immediate but what a Mesmer can do is to outlast your opponent to make them little bit of something in stun,confuse, slow, condition-ing, mindwrack, confusing illusion and as well as morphing your enemy. It makes your opponent hate to deal with you and require seek for help from their teammate to prevent 1vs1 with you. While on top of that, you get some crazy supporting skill ( yes I mean crazy)to support your team member in certain condition like helping them removing all their condition/buffing up their boon and swapping boon from your opponent to become yours while returning them your dangerous condition back to your enemy, all of this kind of CC-ing spell counter attack and defensive spell to supporting your class which what makes Mesmer abit unique to other classes. I can write a lot regardless Mesmer class but meh I'm a lazy person to describe em. conclusion - Mesmer is a class here to support your team and to deal certain amount of dps to your victim. a few Quick Tips - I try out a few build for leveling, IMO i prefer both weapon to be 2hd staff/2hd sword while swapping in 1hd sword + pistol or focus as offhand for the extra swiftness. Traint Point are there for you to build your Mesmer to suit your play style. here are some of the build which easily find on any gw2 forum/guideline conditional base Mesmer, power based, crit based, vitality high hp tanker type based or a balance based is all up to your preferences. Going Sword/Sword and Greatsword now. For normal mobs and soloing, Sword/Sword deals crazy damage and is more than enough to burst things down in one cycle of iSwordsman, Leap, Frenzy and Mind wrack. For tougher mobs, iBerserker and 2 mirror blades, stab, wave, and swap back to swords should take them out.
I do miss the AoE of the staff tho. Keep a staff in the bag for situations where mass AoE > all. Like most Dynamic Events right now. |

I found that Staff + Scepter/Torch fits my playstyle for soloing. I didn't like Pistol 5 accidentally pulling mobs. Also, both Staff and Torch have skills that break targeting.

Playing as a staff / scepter + pistol mesmer, seems to fit my play style, mostly generating clones for the special skills of the class.

Yeah, im running it with signet of inspiration for the tume being, still havent fully explored the class.
Btw anyone running a condition mesmer? Would like to know how well they run since im seeing a majority of skills trigger conditions, would very much like to go on that path |

lvl 39 mesmer reporting. currently on a power build. kinda good so far. but i might need to up my toughness soon. was abit paper when i did my run is ascalon catacombs

sword pistol for PvP actually. Pistol mesmers are really strong because of the illusionist spawn. It focus on one target and shots rapidly.
GS is a general great weapon for all class, cool looking, strong and f***ing cool looking. floating GS casting range skills? bury GS come out illusion attack the at range? YES PLEASE! No comments on staff, not a mesmer just a tester |

Im playing a 80 mesmer staff and sword/focus. Condition 30 power 10 toughness 30 im like a walking nuke bomb with the shatter skill as I slot a trait that allow me to shatter onto myself. The reason I went sword/ focus is mainly the speed buff to chase those annoying their and also as a pulling mechanism if u trigger it the 2 nd time. I do great dmg overtime but not direct dmg

So far armor on sylvari mesmer seems better to me, human armor are kinda normal.
Changed my off hand to focus, and went as a clone bomb mesmer, since 10 trait in chaos gives a skill that inflicts random condition on a nearby foe when a clone dies. Pumped up domination 10 to get 20% extra damage for mind wrack. Didnt bother using +15% damage for illusions since clone only deals 3 damage for me, not sure if its bugged but seems to be way weaker for a clone. And both of the focus skill can instantly become a combo by summoning a warden and placing the veil skill on top of him. Currently trying to get my inspiration to 20 for cooldown reduction on scepter trait. Running a condition mesmer as I was saying, able to get 1.8k confusing damage with 8 stacks of confusion |

sometimes can be confusing for both illusion and phantasm

Rolled a mesmer alt. now at lv21. too bad now attending courses till monday huhu it was pain to play/leveling from lv1-15. then crafted toughness armor and accessories. survivability is quite ok now. and most importantly, mesmer seems to be more fun to play rather than my ranger haha currently running a GS/Sword n focus combo. it is great.

Lvl 80 mesmer now, 20 30 0 10 10. Phantasms are the way to go if you ask me. Just got my Mystic claymore too. PvE isn't bad at all, tho tagging stuff in Orr is a b****. PvP mesmers own faces.

15 25 0 25 5 Mesmer, Staff + 2 Swords / Pistol + Sword , Berserker stack set, takes a while to build up your damage in PvE but when you can get 3 Warlocks up the damage output is crazed. With a necro / engi in team my warlocks would crit at a minimum of 9k and max of 12k Best part is being able to make ready supportive skills while your phantasm are doing the damage Not really a sPvP / WvW build tho |

Mesmer hard meh, hmm my human mesmer level 7 already and I don't really find it hard to play though, and it's quite fun. Higher level I don't know yet, but I guess as long as I don't charge in like I do with my warrior, I should be fine haha.
I have learn all weapons skill for my mesmer except for spear, at the moment using greatsword and sword/pistol. |

good thing about berserker phantasm is that you can send them directly behind the gates/walls or let them distract those archers at the top of the wall
just the skill tooltip kinda misleading they actually hit 3 times per enemy which makes the stated dmg output in the tooltip was meant for 1 hit |

Just got my mesmer to lv52. Doing great now with GS & Scepter/pistol combo. It seems that I'm better keeping ranged attacks rather that using sword combo. too squishy haha. Swapping weapons like crazy to summon Phantasms. Seems like they're the main dmg dealer luls i just run around kiting the mobs lol and hope not to die

my Phantasms don't do dmg wan.
I love the sword wielding capability but the character is as described - "squishy" ......... but I still use the sword anyway, my dual wield sword fighting is still better than running around with scepter + focus. |

Phantasm do damage but clone does not. Using mesmer really test my dodging and moving while attacking skill. Currently running on greatsword and scepter/pistol. Haven't use traits yet, too far from trainer lol

have changed my playstyle into greatsword/sword+pistol. Really nice for PvP and WvW. Start the fight using Greatsword and bring up the pistol phantasm(really nice damages and bleeds). Then, if the enemy gets near, ill either push them with greatsword skill5 or use sword skill2(invulnerability while doing dmg).

mesmer got nerf badly on latest patch..... we got hammered by anet...
Signet of Domination can no longer be cast on targets behind the mesmer. Added a much faster breakout for mesmer underwater mantras. Phantasmal Warlock: Increased recharge to 20 seconds. Chaos Armor: Decreased recharge to 35 seconds. Chaos Storm: Increased recharge to 35 seconds. Phantasmal Duelist: Increased recharge to 20 seconds. Phantasmal Swordsman: Increased recharge to 18 seconds. |

maybe we should think on another way on phantasm,

It's not that bad a nerf. In PvE, your phantasm is still not going to recharge before whatever you're trying to kill is dead (unless its a boss). In WvW, the berserker is still the same, and its the best phantasm to use in wuvwuv anyway.
Don't do sPvP so I can't comment. |

To a certain extent it's true though, we usually kill the target even before phantasm initiate 2nd atk. I just analyzed through the runes
the healing mantra can utilize superior runes of centaur (There are some other runes that also utilizing healing as trigger. same thing applied) the 4th skill of the rune: +20% swiftness duration the 6th skill of the rune: cast 10secs of swiftness to own and any other ally around you. 10secs cool down. Apparently after tested it yesterday, casting or discharge the healing mantra also will trigger this effect. This means an infinite swiftness buff. Even though the rune skill stated 20% bonus for swiftness, but I can get near 15s of swiftness for ownself, while 10s for others. Downside is unable to have any other runes as this set already consumed all 6 armor rune slots. P.S: put the mantra trait skill (Power) to discharge 3 times per cast even nicer. Or the trait skill that allow any mantra casting to heal nearby ally. |

I am using dwayna currently.
healing wise still guardian or engy healing turret far more superior. mesmer currently have 2 ways of provide regen as i can think of. The phantasm regen field and from rune. Rune need healing skill activation which means not really viable to keep on casting it as we might end up get owned while the healing skill still in CD. as for the rune of water and flock, i have googled and check on the healing amount. the amount really not significant enough to be put on investment (somewhere 1k @lvl80 without healing stat). in this case I would say dwayna regen is better in some sense. as for mantra build. I have tested mantra build for quite some time. the recovery mantra really not suitable for WvW that require high survibility. Yes, with proper traits, the mantra can provide better healing amount, but the process is too tedious that can get you killed. Ether feast still the best shot to survive burst attack. PvE wise, mantra is damm good to provide own healing and heal support. (~2.7k hp heal times 3 with 1 time extra heal to ownself + nearby ally upon finish casting the mantra) |

iberserker dmg is bug now, obstructed everywhere when summon phantasm, torch skill still suck, blind/invulnerable/block (maybe) will failed to summon phantasm...

Mesmer so sad now? I wonder if A.Net nerf too generally because of balancing sPvP? Perhaps sPvP needs a different build than the current mesmer if it really is this bad. Well I hope there is still a mesmer come back or something in the future, this job interest me so much that I wanna try out but sad to see the recent posts.

Better tell us what kind of playstyle you want so people can give better suggestion. I tried mesmer recently up to lvl 20. Seems fine to me. My main is a necro so not that much difference.

Usually there's always a playstyle that fits your taste for a profession.Try watching the vids by MrPrometheus in the stickied thread of the mesmes subforum in the official forum. That vids focus on teaching the basics of each traits, utilities and also weapons usage. If your toon already lvl 80 you can always gets green items from tp to test the build that you like. I suggest green items because its cheap, than work your way up for the exotics later on. |

I'm at lv31 right now. I just want an easy & functional way to leveling mesmer, I dont have the luxury to test with a variety of builds yet. I can do it after reach lv80 anyway, yeah?
