Just came back from a long trip to USA and noticed some bumps along the way:

Be clear about the checked baggage weight allowance for trans-pacific flights. Some airlines have drastically reduced it. Typically, it's about 20kg per each of two bags.

Malaysians be sure to have an address with ZIP code and phone number for every stopover. It could even be fake but the counter at KLIA may not let you check in without it. If you must go to internet to get the address, the nearest place charges RM$10 for an access card and the few PCs might be hogged by other people or rosak. No free wi-fi with coffee.

If you stopover and then take a domestic flight, don't let the ground staff steer you to the self-check-in kiosks. You will be charged for baggage even if you are entitled for free. Go to the manned counter and tell them you are travelling "intercontinental" so should get free carriage for whatever your first airline from KL allowed.

However, each airline can have its own policies and some refuse. I found "American Airlines" especially stingy and made me pay US$25/bag every time, wheareas "US Air" and "United Airlines" did not. Moreover, AA had the worst value food on board, few choices, US$10 for a cold chicken sandwich on white bread & small bag of chips, no drink. "United" had appealing hot meals for the same price.

Where to purchase reseal-able and transparent plastic bag to carry liquid container ?

Sadly in comparison to us, many USA airports give for free and also have mail drop boxes to post home anything you don't want to throw away.

To address your question, the cheapest are Zip-Loc or equivalent food bags from any supermarket. You can also purchase clear plastic kits at pharmacies. Look for zip bags that come with other shopping items. I have some from buying little towels, bedding, cosmetics, cookies, etc.

I took that CS flight some years ago to LAX on the A380. The baggage allowance was generous.

The problem is if you interline with a stopover. The next airline (esp US domestic) might not be so considerate. If you do that, then allow plenty of time for check in at the next airport because you might have to ask to talk to the supervisor, show your tickets to prove transpacific origin, original baggage allowance, etc.

Another warning, if there is a potential problem, do not use the self-check in machines which will just charge you as much as they can.

Thank you very much for your time to respond guys. And yes, you're all right. I have contacted two travel agents and they confirm that the airlines allow 2x 23kg from Malaysia to US (even the flight from Malaysia to China first). So I don't have to worry about bringing winter clothing with overweight luggage issue tongue.gif . And oneeleven thank you for the additional information and sharing, will keep it in mind, who knows what can happen right? sweat.gif

I'm likely to do it again, so give us report on how everything goes, ok? Have a great trip.
