On my recent trip to Tawau via Airasia. I booked a return flight to Tawau much much earlier due to promotion, but later realized that I can't make such a long trip. So I booked another 1-way flight from KL-Tawau and plan to burn my earlier KL-Tawau ticket from the return flight.
During web check in, I checked in my return flight (Tawau-KL only) for my first booking.
And check in as usual for my second booking.
No issues whatsoever. But please check with your airline for more info.
I think it has to do with the way airlines operate.
traditional full fledged airline - return is always cheaper, if you book 2 x one way it will cost more than a return ticket.
budget airline work a little different in the sense that they just add up the cost of going and return.
I miss my MAS flight and they automatically remove my return ticket, called and they claimed this is the policy and there is nothing you can do about it. A friend share that it is possible to rescue that ticket if you have special reasons such as health condition etc but basically if you miss the first flight of your booking due to last minute change by yourself, your whole booking is gone.
