Hi, I've just recently started lifting again after a 2 year hiatus. Would appreciate some advise about separating the core muscles.

My schedule atm:

Monday: Chest/triceps/ shoulders

Tuesday: Biceps/ Back

Wednesday: Rest

Thursday: Cardio plus abs

Friday: Legs

Is this optimal?

What I do is:

Day 1: Chest/tricep
Day 2: Bicep/Back
Day 3: Rest/swimming/sports
Day 4: shoulder/traps
Day 5: Legs
Day 6: Rest/swimming/sports
Day 7: Rest/swimming/sports

Abs every 3 days. Working good so far.

Depends on your goal, really. Are you aiming to bodybuild or for general strength and fitness?

For me, it is easier to find a routine that is created by a pro because it has been tested and there are a lot of proven result for it (depending on the routine).

Your routine is fine. I would give shoulders their own day, perhaps with abs on the day before legs. But if you really want to train shoulders on your chest day, then train them before triceps. Training triceps before shoulders will likely take away your pressing strength.

For me,

Monday- Chest
Tues- Back
Wed- Shoulders
Thurs- Rest
Friday- Legs
Sat- Arms

I usually lift at night, and I include 2-3 sessions of 30-40 min of cardio + ab circuit work in the morning before breakfast every week.
