Manchester United's Dimitar Berbatov is having a medical at Fulham, Cottagers manager Martin Jol has confirmed.

The Bulgarian, 31, was expected to join Italian side Fiorentina but the deal fell through following interest from the London club.

Fulham have agreed personal terms with Berbatov and are expected to pay United between £3m and £5m for the striker, who was also wanted by Juventus.

The deal it is expected to be completed by the end of Thursday.

Fiorentina claim they had agreed a deal with United and had already paid the first instalment of the transfer fee for Berbatov, who was a £30.75m signing from Tottenham in 2008.

A statement from the Serie A club criticised the player, claiming he had failed to arrive in Florence to finalise the move after paying for his flight.

"He's not worthy of our city, our shirt and the values it represents," read the statement.

Fiorentina, looking to rebuild after a disappointing 13th-place finish last season, also blamed "the reckless and arrogant actions of other clubs".

Berbatov's agent was unavailable for comment when contacted by BBC Sport, while Juventus rejected claims they had acted badly.

Giuseppe Marotta, director general of Juventus, said: "There was a proposal by Fulham. We made our own, then the player said he preferred to stay in England for family reasons.

"We have acted with the maximum fairness and transparency with regard to the market dynamics.

"I reject the allegations from Fiorentina. We entered into the business over Berbatov when we heard that he had refused Fiorentina."

In July, Berbatov said it would be "better for everyone" if he left United after starting just five Premier League matches last season.

He has seen his chances of earning more regular first-team football diminish further with the arrival this summer of £24m striker Robin van Persie from Arsenal.

Fergie will pair Roo with RVP

Sir Alex Ferguson is adamant that Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie can play together and has shrugged off speculation surrounding the former's future.

Van Persie, a £24million summer signing from Arsenal, made his Manchester United debut in an away date at Everton alongside Rooney.

The Dutchman was, however, deployed as a lone frontman in the Red Devils' last Premier League outing against Fulham.

Rooney's absence from the starting XI in a contest which ended with him picking up a leg injury sparked speculation that he could be deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

Ferguson, though, has sought to play down such talk and has revealed that he plans to pair his two most potent attacking weapons together when the time is right.

On the Rooney rumours, he said: "It doesn't bother me, to be honest with you. I am not in the slightest bit interested in it. It doesn't affect me one bit. It could affect him.

"Players like to be playing every week and that's the horrible part of the game. When you are not playing on a Saturday a player is disappointed. And I'm glad they're disappointed. I was the same when I played.

"I always looked forward to a Saturday. It's different today with different days but then Saturday was always your day. You were brought up that way.

"Will that fire up Wayne even more? It's not a problem. It's only one game."

On the striking combinations available to him, Ferguson added: "Van Persie is flexible because you can play him in different positions. You can play him from the right side, from behind the strikers.

"Wayne can play in behind and he can play up, too.

"Chicharito (Javier Hernandez) is the only one who is a one-position player and that's through the middle. But yes, I can see Van Persie and Wayne playing together. Absolutely.

"There's no doubt about that. And (Danny) Welbeck can play with him. No question about that either. I have got good options and that's where it's going to be difficult.

"It's not easy picking the team. And they know that. I have got a difficult job but the important thing is the end result. If the end is right then we're all satisfied that they have all contributed."

rotating the GK usually wont work coz this position worked slightly different than the other outfield position, which is why most team only have 1 really good GK
*
Exactly. Fergie will have to be consistent and drop the GK whenever mistakes happens which will be madness to be honest. Really didnt expect DDG to be dropped.

Early United hat-tricks

QUOTE
Amid all the excitement on Sunday, it's worth putting Robin van Persie's achievement into perspective after his hat-trick ensured a 3-2 win against Southampton.

The new signing took just three games – two starts – to bag a treble and elevate him to an elite group of players who have quickly become Old Trafford heroes with their goalscoring exploits.

Of course, Wayne Rooney smashed three goals on his debut in a Champions League tie with Fenerbahce in 2004 equalling a feat managed by Charlie Sagar in 1905. But van Persie's current team-mate is the only United player quicker to grab hold of the match-ball since.

A number of post-War stars have netted hat-tricks in their first season, including the recently-departed Michael Owen who showed vintage form in the win at Wolfsburg in his 20th appearance but only eighth start.

Stuart Pearson took only nine games to blast a treble, with all his goals coming in the first half of a 4-0 win against Oxford in the Second Division back in 1974. Seven matches into Andy Cole's United career, he hit five in the 9-0 annihiliation of Ipswich to silence any criticism of the fee that brought him from Newcastle.

Sir Bobby Charlton wasted less time, taking only six games to register a hat-trick for the club. After a brace on his debut against Charlton, he went one better in the 5-1 win at The Valley in February 1957. He went on to take home the match-ball on a further six occasions.

Even the biggest hat-trick king of them all, Denis Law, took 16 games, although he did it in style, with four against Ipswich. The Stretford End idol notched at least three times on 18 occasions.

Another of United's deadliest marksmen and van Persie's countryman, Ruud van Nistelrooy, needed 22 fixtures. Coincidentally, he hit his first treble against Southampton after also opening his league account versus Fulham.

+1

But when the gaffer call you, you'll play in what ever position.

I do miss O'Shea and Phil Nev in times liek this.

O'Shea especially who can covers the whole back four. Wonder if Jones will be the next utility man for us? tongue.gif

I just hope SAF stops dropping DDG and rotate around the GK position again like last season.

Same here. Once you starting dropping DDG for a mistake, you will have to be consistent and do the same to AL as well which will be disastrous. I don't want to be guessing who's our GK every match! Not to mentioned I had DDG in my fantasy team last week! laugh.gif

Reds strike a pose

Sir Alex and his players gathered at Old Trafford recently for the annual squad photograph.

Summer signings Robin van Perise, Shinji Kagawa, Nick Powell, Alexander Büttner and Angelo Henriquez stood alongside their new team-mates, and club photographers John and Matt Peters were there to snap the players striking a pose alongside the manager and his coaching staff.

Rooney to eventually drop into midfield

Wayne Rooney believes his future lies in midfield and thinks he will drop back when he loses the sharpness to play as a striker.

Rooney, 26, had a spell as an emergency central midfielder in October and November 2011 and he feels it could become a permanent move, saying he would love to be a playmaker.

"I did my bit by dropping into a central midfield role when the team got hit by injuries last season," Rooney said in My Decade in the Premier League, which is being serialised by the Daily Mirror.

"The manager thinks I can do a job there and, with the likes of Tom Cleverley, Anderson, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher all missing games, he asked me to help out.

"When I get stuck into the action as a central playmaker, I love it. I get more of the ball, I'm involved loads and I even think about playing there permanently, but only later in my career."

The England international is the fourth highest goalscorer in United's history and still sees himself as an attacker now but hopes a switch further down the line could extend his career.

"In midfield I don't have to be as sharp as a forward," he said. "Once I feel that I haven't got the sharpness needed to get away from defenders, I'll probably drop back into midfield for a couple of seasons so I can still influence the game.

"In my heart I'd prefer it if I was playing up front, because I can still do a lot of damage, but the sacrifices don't bother me."

Manchester United hope new medical centre will help address their recent injury problems

Manchester United are aiming to address their recent injury problems by opening a state-of-the-art £13 million medical centre at the club’s Carrington training ground in November.

The facility is expected to fast-track Sir Alex Ferguson’s players back to fitness and ensure quicker, and more private, injury diagnosis on site rather than rely on nearby hospitals.

The medical centre, which will be supplied with CT and MRI scanners and other cutting-edge equipment as part of a five-year agreement with the Japanese company Toshiba, is set to be the first of its kind in the Premier League, with Manchester United planning to emulate the physiological and sports science benefits enjoyed by AC Milan at their world-renowned Milanello complex.

Research carried out at the end of last season by the sports injury website physioroom.com showed that United suffered the worst injury list in the Premier League during the 2011-12 campaign, with the club suffering 39 significant problems – those lasting for at least two weeks – which amounted to a total 1,681 days lost to injury by Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad.

In comparison, champions Manchester City suffered just seven significant injuries, costing Roberto Mancini’s squad a total of 186 days lost to injury.

United manager Ferguson issued a staunch defence of the club’s medical team last season following criticism from former midfielder Owen Hargreaves over his treatment during lengthy injury problems, with the Scot insisting “some of the best sports medical staff in world sport” are employed at Old Trafford.

But with United believing the club has now outgrown the existing medical facilities at Carrington, which opened in July 2000, plans were drawn and approved last year to build the new complex.

United have cited the rapid advancements in sports science and medicine and Ferguson’s demand for the club to possess a competitive advantage in the field of rehabilitation and fitness as the justification for the medical centre.

Having targeted an opening date at the end of 2012 for the centre, United are now planning for it to open its doors in two months.
