Completed my MBP 2011 upgrade in an hour.

Upgrade RAM to 8GB (Kingston KTA)
Install new SSD Intel 520 180G in SATA III
Install existing HDD Hitachi 500GB 7200RPM in SATA II OptiBay
Clean installation of Mountain Lion
Copy user data from Lion in Hitachi HDD

Boot into ML in 7 secs. Most of the applications launch in less than 3-4 secs.
Instantaneous web surfing using Safari 6

Truly amazed by ML + SSD

I bought the optibay from ebay, search for this seller, rexchg, fast & reliable.

I bought the following from rexchg, and I'm still using the removed optical drive, it is now my USB external optical drive;

1x 2nd HDD SDD hard drive caddy for Apple MacBook Pro Unibody
1x SATA super slim USB external slot in cd dvd case 12.7mm

is TRIM enabled  in system information?

No, it is not enabled. Do we really need TRIM Enabler? Read from forum, some said we need, some said it has been taken care by Sandforce controller.

Should I turn it on?

For me warranty comes first. Which only Intel 520 offers 5 years warranty. Outside Malaysia, Vertex 4 comes with 5 years warranty as well, but sadly not Malaysia.

So far I'm very happy & satisfied with my Intel 520 180G. Everything loaded less than 3 seconds.

I have enabled TRIM in Mountain Lion. Noticed that my Intel 520 180g speed has been slowed down as compared to before TRIM.

Before TRIM
Read: 445 MB/s
Write: 215 MB/s

After TRIM is enabled
Read: 400 MB/s
Write: 190 MB/s

Is this normal? For the sake of good speed & longer life span, should we enable or disable TRIM?

I have completed my upgrade last week for my 2011 Macbook Pro.

Previous setup;
500GB 7200 Hitachi
Mac OS X Lion

Current setup;
Intel 520 180G SSD in MBP Sata III
500GB HDD in MBP Optibay Sata II
Mac OS X Mountain Lion (clean installation)

Done upgrade in 1 hour +

ML starts in 7 secs, all application launched within 3 secs, mostly around 1 sec. Photoshop CS6 launched in 2 secs, iTunes 1 sec, Safari, Chrome & Firefox all in 1 sec.

Overall I recog it as a big leap upgrade, even surfing web using Safari 6 is a lot faster than Safari 6 in Lion at 500G HDD.

I still keep my bootcamp in 500GB HDD, but it is really crawling as compared to ML in SSD.

The choice is yours.

I've used Corsair Force GT, Crucial M4, Intel 330, OCZ Vertex 2 and Agility 3 SSDs in the past (and present).
Compared to them, the Samsung 830 proved to me it is the fastest drive of them all but that only matters when I'm doing real-time video recording and recording.

This is where I save a huge video file (usually .tp/.ts mpeg-2, which could go up to 15GB for a 1 hour clip), and the Samsung 830 proved to be the snappiest.

So yes, to me at least personally.. it is the best SSD I've used so far.

Do you think TRIM is a must for SSD long term use? Do you experience any slower performance over time?

Thx

Just got my Intel SSD 520 120gb yesterday. Did a fresh install of Win 7. Running on Sata 6Gb/s port and AHI mode but my benchmark is so low.
Ran Intel SSD Toolbox and confirmed is running latest firmware.
Any idea what's wrong here?  icon_question.gif
thanks in advance

I installed Intel 520 180G weeks ago in my MBP 2011 running Mountain Lion. Benchmarking using Black Magic, Read speed is 445MB/s, Write is 195MB/s

I guess it is almost the same as yours. Start up & app launching speed is superb.
