Question:

Does the Asus RT-N66U router can replace the thomson TG784n? I don't mind if the IP phone not working.

Yes, check up on this thread. And it works for me.

The problem with my setup is that I'm not using HG850a but an Alcatel-Lucent BTU which is not accessible to reconfigure.

If you do not need the VOIP, then is simple.
Just get an router that able to perform vlan tagging, then it can be replaced without touching the Unifi Modem.

VOIP is secondary to me. If can use then it's a plus point. Right now I'm looking at Asus RT-N66U as the replacement. I've been using Maxis not even a month the Thomson router already giving headache twice. I just reboot the router and all settings was gone. It's a good thing that I've saved the user.ini but need to reset the router so it can detect even the ethernet connection. Really bengang la with this Thomson.  vmad.gif

if im not mistaken, the modem provided by TM is life time warranty

and the thompsom router by maxis is 1 year warranty.

By this May i will change it to a high end one.

Yes, that's also my concern for the 1 year warranty of thompson router.
And according to the website, the router costs rm4-500!!
I will definately change it for a better one.

can anyone help with my question? all these instructions/talk are about using own router, setting VLAN etc.. with certain Huawei Modem. but my modem is the newer  huawei hg850a.
my question is, is it possible to connect that modem directly to my laptop without using any router, do something to dial it ? I will use my own laptop as router using windows 2003 server

if it's not possible, which router (with exact model) is the easiest to use with this huawei modem ?

thomsonn router is an abomination

so far there is nothing can be replace if u refer to malaysia home user market. btw, thomson is not the only one giving problem to maxis ftth. here is the total issues since it launch until now, with some of them already resolved:
1) hijacking of page to mylaunchpad.
2) private IP address by default
3) high ping
4) traffic shaping/throttling
5) blocking of some websites
6) interference with direct downloads
7) shitty thomson routers
8) router backdoor
9) disconnection every 48 hours for dhcp lease
10) changing of T&C at their whims and fancy.

Option is change to a router with vlan tagging ability.
Microtek router or TP Link router with custom firmware can do that.
But losing VOIP function, there is a guide to use VOIP on TM Huawei Modem.
I am using TP Link router with OpenWRT firmware now, most of the above issue are gone.
