Remember 1993-1994? When Japanmania instead was sweeping through Malaysia? TV3 showing Japanese serials dubbed into Malay. The fact that it's dubbed into Malay says that Chinese folks aren't the main audience...
Which non malay movies/shows are not dubbed into malay subtitles on free TV ?
They want to put into malay subtitles even if nobody watches it because they think it is the national language.
Anyway, a lot of chinese don't know enough mandarin or cantonese but they understand malay. The mandarin/cantonese spoken in malaysia are of 'primary school level' and insufficient to understand HK, china, taiwan serials.
At that time, there were not many TV channels, tv1, tv2, tv3, ntv7 so the malays have no choice but to watch.
Nowadays the malays have many more programmes and choices to watch, if you see their astro packages subscribed, those are mainly the malay/arab/indonesian packages and not the chinese, korean or jap packages.
