Multi Channels Asia Lands Malaysian Carriage Deal By Kristin Brzoznowski Published: August 10, 2012

SINGAPORE: Multi Channels Asia (MCA) has secured a carriage agreement with the Malaysian cable operator Asian Broadcasting Network (ABN) for eight channels, including NDTV 24/7.

Also included in the pact are Bloomberg Television, KidsCo, NDTV Good Times, NDTV India and Outdoor Channel as well as Havoc 24 and Motorvision. ABN will be delivering these eight services for pay TV in Malaysia.
Hope they really mean Multi Channels. Because currently, TM has Bloomberg, KidsCo and Outdoor Channel. If KidsCo vanish from TM...

But who are we going to believe, astro or KBS?
*
Good question. Assteruk may tell KBS one thing, and do opposite. Maybe KBS HD will be downsampled to widescreen SD or even poorly cropped or letterboxed on the service... Notice what they say on the bottom of image sweat.gif

Sounds like.....but there is also fashiontv HD on hypp tv..  :-)

Yeah, there's FashionTV HD on TM IPTV. However, on demand, TM's On-Demand system doesn't work like Mio's or Assteruk's. There's a dedicated VOD menu.

I'm talking about the VOD system in general. TM doesn't have FTV on Demand tongue.gif

Anyways, I'll take pics of the menu when I get home.

FTV got catchup tv, just press guide button & choose the programme u want, (one week programme)

Hmm, interesting. I didn't know about that because I didn't take the FTVHD package.

---

I forgot I promised screenshot of TM's VOD menus. So, here they are, just freshly taken moments ago.

user posted image
The TM IPTV remote has a VOD button. Pressing it brings up the VOD menu

user posted image
Basically, the control is a bit counterintuitive at first because of screen layout. Up and down scrolls the menu to the left, which is the master category menu. If FashionTV On Demand is available in Malaysia, it would appear independently as an option on the left. On the right, the left and right button scrolls the available shows available on demand. In cases of movies, the right option will immediately start the movie when you press the green button.

user posted image
However, in some cases of TV Show On Demand (i.e. Galaxy, which offers certain KidsCo shows on Demand), selecting an available show will bring up an episode menu.

i've subscribed rm30 for 30 channel, you guys seems really interested with this ftv channel , will try to take a shot of how catch up tv work later...
*
Okok. How many/which channels have Catch up TV function? I notice that some offer two hour rewind maximum (i.e. if you're 15 minutes late for a show, you can rewind 15 minutes to the start, but if the show is over two hours ago, no chance of getting it already).

QUOTE(aerobowl @ Aug 17 2012, 12:28 PM)
many HD channels are ready with eng/chi subtitles but astro rather drop the "given" subtitles and replace with home made bm subtitles/language
*
I've seen some hilarious translation errors on RTM/MP channels before, but one would think Assteruk would be much more professional...

As for BM audio, I'm a purist. I rather watch show in original language than dubbed to BM/BI. Why I hate TV2 right now- IMO it's idiotic to dub Disney cartoons to BM, especially since most kids nowadays understand English (and if not, it will drive them to at least learn English as a second language, a much needed skill in a world where English is the language of business and science).

You know how many satellites serving DirecTV? (Hint: their dish has 4-5 LNB and is oblong in shape). How many satellites serving Assteruk? (Hint: two of our MEASAT satellites, including MEASAT-1 which should rightfully be considered a national heritage, was sold off/leased to South Africa instead of being used to provide more bandwidth...).

Furthermore, aside from at least three dozen cable TV and IPTV providers, they have a real competing satellite TV provider- Dish Networks. Because of the competition they have to keep creating new features to attract subscribers.

Assteruk? Government backed monopoly in the satellite TV market, and the other providers are pretty much no match due to their structure/stupidity, made assteruk extremely arrogant and unwilling to listen to subscribers. MegaTV died because they didn't evolve to compete with assteruk. MITV got squashed because assteruk made a deadly move of offering their decoder FOC with sign up as soon as MITV came out, which MITV cannot risk doing cause they stupidly put all their capital into R&D for a strange proprietary IPTV-over-DVB-T decoder instead of going for something that's already readily available. DETV is still alive, but because of their offering they're only popular among Chinese folks who usually keep it as a second decoder for channels that assteruk dun have. FineTV died because of stupidity of overpricing and not enough content (half a dozen channels of in-house local crap? Laughable). TM IPTV? Good channel offering, but lousy rollout speed and cannot unbundle IPTV for TV channels only. And lastly, ABN is still awfully silent...

I hope CN HD ends up on TM. Imo Assteruk is not qualified to carry childrens channel given their prejudice.

I've already talked to TM about CN HD long time ago, as soon as it's announced that Aora TV Indonesia has become the first provider to carry CN HD. TM claims they're working on it. I hope they're telling the truth. Because I do NOT want to see Assteruk carrying CN HD- they'll just rape the channel left and right. I expect Disney XD to be raped and injected with local rubbish once Assteruk gets their hands on the channel. Just like what they did to Disney Channel.

Besides, Assteruk will force my aunt into upgrading to Bae Yong and paying for HD (which she doesn't need, her TV is still a 15 years old CRT TV) before they'll let her see channel. TM doesn't have this BS, each channel is ala-carte. And oh, don't need to pay extra to have HDMI activated either. I may have terminated Assteruk, but my aunt still has it. Because my grandparents have been hopelessly hypnotized by the Chinese drama channels.

The above pixs I took were from Singtel mio TV.......they just replace the SD feed with the new one and ran a scroll saying something like "You're now enjoying KBS World in High Definition offered to you at no additional cost."
*
That's the problem with Assteruk. You need to pay extra RM10 for HD channels. Even TM offers HD channels at no extra cost. Heck, if you don't pay Assteruk they won't even let you use the HDMI output for SD. TM has no such stupidity.

Assteruk's move can even come across as actively discouraging people from adopting HD...

Its actually RM 20 per month for HD Service. For Superpacks subscribers, already included and bundled with HD Service. I did not subscribe to any Superpack. I know because I am already paying additional RM 20 per mth for the HD Service.

Link about the amount for HD Service... http://www.astro.com.my/byond/articles/art_6121.html... and refer to "Step 3" there.

It was just a minor typo mistake by RAMchyLD who quoted the wrong amount because he had already cancelled his Astro account a long time ago because of his dissatisfaction with As*teruk.
*
you're right, typo. Iirc in 2010 it was RM10. But it has been so long and I could've been mistaken anyway. Still. It stands that it looks like assteruk is discouraging HD take up by purposely forcing those who want HD to pay more...

The problem with my HD channels is that sometimes the screen blacks out. No display plus no sound. The period for the black outs are random but usually they lasts for about 1 to 3 seconds. Then the display and sound comes back.
*
Are you using your own cable or Assteruk's provided cable?
Try using a different cable (preferably also shorter cable) and see if the problem persists. If yes then try a different HDMI port on the TV and/or a different TV. If still got the problem then confirm decoder defective. But if the problem goes away on different HDMI port on the TV or on different TV, then the TV has damaged HDMI ports and you need to contact the company that made the TV for service.

QUOTE(Qash-M @ Sep 5 2012, 11:23 PM)
Do remind that both Starhub & Singtel are both in Cable TV stuff, while Astro is a Satellite TV operator. Cable TV had the advantage of being weather-proof. nod.gif
*
If assteruk had chosen to use S-Band instead, they would've been mostly weatherproof too.

I say mostly because cable TV not necessary 100% weather proof either. If heavy monsoon rain fall at the "dish farm" (the place where the provider put up dishes to convert satellite signal into CATV/IPTV signal), the service is also cut off if the channel owner is using Ku Band to beam signal to the provider. I've actually seen HyppTV glitch up with some international channels during some heavy monsoon rain days as well.

Under the tie-up, Maxis, the integrated communications service provider, has entered a 10-year partnership with exclusivity for Astro to be the Internet Protocol television (IPTV) content service provider for three years.
*
Quick Fridge Horror realization for you Assteruk IPTV subscribers on Time BB out there. What happens to Assteruk IPTV on Time BB when Maxis launch their IPTV with Assteruk? hmm.gif
(hint: the danger word is exclusivity)

Anyway, I will try using another HDMI cable tonight. Luckily I have one spare one lying about. If that does not solve the issue, Assteruk's customer service is going to get a call from me.  tongue.gif
*
Is the cable shorter? I've actually seen cases where a combination of devices just cannot support long cables (more than 2 meters). The cable is okay because other devices can connect to the display with the cable, but one particular device (Mac Mini) has intermittent blackout like the problem you experienced. Swapping the cable out for a shorted one causes the problem to go away.

*
That's another thing. Singapore signals are fed as is (in fact, since the transmission facilities for most Asia region channels are in Singapore anyway, I'm guessing many channels on Starhub and Singtel are tapped from the source before the signal even get transmitted to satellites for distribution to the rest of Asia!). Malaysia, well, because of stupid gomen conservative policy, signal is received, decompressed, delayed and most of the time censored (depending on source), recompressed into an inferior codec at lower bitrate (a big no-no) and then retransmitted onto satellite again for assteruk, retransmitted over Internet for DETV, or relayed to Fiber for TM IPTV.

Given assteruk's attitude, I won't count on it. Now only they bring in Sky News (remember when we're all demanding for the channel back during the Royal Wedding fiasco?) and also given how they look down on childrens programming. I won't count on them getting BabyTV HD.

They should put an animated border around the corner like some UK/Europe channels are doing with upscaled transmission. Sure, it's a bit annoying, but at least the screen won't suffer persistence with two horizontal bars on the side if your TV is left on the channel for too long.
