If you the client and get to choose.
Would you be rather look for designer and source your production or have it all under one roof?

Design might be free but production not. It depends on how you play the game.

Job Title : Interior Designer
Job Description : site supervision & drawings
Years spent in company : 6 months
Company : Interior Design
Industry : Design & built
Tenure : Permanent
Experience before joining : 0
Salary : RM 2k

I felt 2k kind of low, no ot & commission.
If I were to hop at 1 year experience, whats the salary I should be expecting. Because I supervise & control projects a lot, I've learn a lot on production but when it comes to design I've done not much here.

I felt that I don't have anything to add on to my portfolio for my projects but a lot people said "many designer only know design but don't have experience on site".

Is 2.5k after a year experience is what I should be seeking or I should seek higher up? Help please sifu

As a interior designer myself. Advise you to focus on design for at least two years to explore more on design, use of material. Else you will hard to get back to design after 2years of site supervising. Your creativity will dies. Since you have done 6months in the company. Continued another 6months then only make your decision. Look for company that focus more on design.

I started my 1st job as a designer 10years back and getting paid 1,800 after confirmation. 2k is kinda underpaid for your case. And one more thing is a contractor firm never value designer. So it's hard to get any higher at your company if you want to do design.

Thanks for the advice. Thats what I worry the most, dying of my creativity.
But I realize that firm like mine is actually easy money compare to a design company.
My clients are designers & I earn the most cut out of the project with the least effort.
I could see this is my road to success but this isn't something I enjoy doing very much. At a dilemma.

Interior designers finding client legitly just by connections while contractor have constant flow of projects.
Just something that I've been thinking about. Cause its not like our company did 0 design but very less have the opportunity.
Thoughts?

Job Title : Product Designer
Job Description : Design Product Outlook and Drawing
Years spent in company : 1 Years 8 month
Company : Manufacturing Factory
Industry : Electrical Product
Tenure : Permanent
Experience before joining : 3 Years
Salary : RM 2.8k

I'm 28 married and for that salary I can't even buying house. How to do?

Lets take a look at my journey on working experience.

2013--> After graduate, working at printing company as graphic designer and production manager. Salary Rm1300

2015--> After jobless about 3 month(personal matter), working back as creative marketing designer at boutique. Salary RM1500

2015-current--> Working at factory as Product Designer, starting salary Rm2.5k. After 1 year now 2.8k.

As start working at factory I manage to save money and get married at 2016. Now, focusing on buying house. But with that current salary, its quite hard to find house at Shah Alam/Setia Alam/Klang area because the price is crazy.

I ask people if want properties at that area, u at least need 6k income. For apartment 850sf already 300k that around 1.4k monthly, I'm targeting on landed house after survey all above 400k. Must atleast 2k monthly for house pay, so with the current salary i give up. 2 years more before i turn 3 series.

Any chance how to get higher pay in this industry?

Manufacturing, Electrical. Panasonic?
its hard to believe you getting paid 2.8k only. do your study industrial design or product design?
but lets look back at your fresh grads, work as graphic designer, none have related to what you did now and your starting with 2.5k as a junior consider not bad. stay another year or two see how it goes 1st. thats the reason i always advise fresh grads choose your path correctly on your 1st job. it make what you are today.

i study industrial design also last time.
may i ask, an engineer or a designer is leading your department currently?

IN DEPTH
Not a conventional ID firm, but I somewhat deal with medical planing (designing hospitals) in a basic level. It's pretty specialized field. I understand in the overseas market it's pretty demanding. However, I'm interested to know what would my expectations be in our MY market within a year or 2.

Currently, designing is not my core scope. As our project is on a larger scale and ID is not as fancy as your typical ID firm. I'm dealing more with application of AU healthcare design standard, compliance of local ministry guideline, coordination with medical planners AR, M&E etc. I would say at the moment I'm more in a coordinator role.
I am considering in doing my MBA in a couple of years. However, I'm not certain if I will continue to stay in MY or work my way overseas esp if our salaries stay below RM5K within the next 2 years.

Anyone with an opinion on the best way forward?

hello there,

your work are too specified and usually as a consultant appointed by the client to lias with the designer or contractor. every material and spec uses including layout have to go through you. you do little design only and usually amend on people's design.

i heard people that sell medical equipment making big money and they do provide such services as a consultancy also.

Does your job require special course or training?

That's too bad. Engineer run a design development department. Other country in this field a chief designer lead the whole design department.
