I recall that HK folks tend to be arrogant. Hopefully I don't have one as a neighbour in the near future.

agree. they used to call ppls from PRC 亚灿 when their ancestors are from Guangdong area as well.

and they call malaysians malai.

well what goes around comes around. well nobody expected in just one genearation China had jump from 3rd world to 1st world, and and china cities like Shanghai, Shenzhen has overtaken and rest of SEA countries had closed the gap while HK remain stagnant

HK thrived on being different from mainland and act as a bridge to Mainland. with China opens up, this is both a blessing as well as a curse to HK coz it means HK's role as a free port and bridge to China is diminishing..

Yeah...i watched few vid...really beh tahan them keep wanting to speak canto...wat lah...they think canto rule the world meh?? Now they cant even rule their motherland....

And generally speaking, hk people punya england tak boleh pakai wan and few of them can speak mandarin. They really caught up in the rock and hard world.

preserving Canto should be praised.. if HK want to stand up to PRC's propaganda, this is fundamental.

btw, canto is a much more beautiful and older language than mandarin. mandarin that we PRC learn today has much more influence from the northern barbaric tribes.

Even the US managed to preserve English despite being a melting pot of a myriad of cultures and languages. They even go as far as to offer classes to master English as a 2nd language for migrants without them losing their mother tongue.

I know it's not really an apple to apple comparison, but the point is like it or not, HK is already part of China and the local gov't should have encouraged learning Chinese since they'll be dealing with the latter. If Singapore, a majority Hokkien speaking country, can do it, why not them?

the problem lies with what's the intention of PRC implementing mandarin language in HK. there is deep distrust of PRC government of wanting to brainwash the hongkongers and spreading propaganda thru mandarin.

Hongkongers have no issue with English under British rule. in fact they embrace it with both hands.

good example on Singapore... not sure you aware how LKY wipe off mandarin during his early years? and he closed first and only chinese university outside of China/ Taiwan and his concern was..

it is only recently after China progressed and 'perceived' openness following Deng that Singapore slowly open up encouraging mandarin.

but by now, we know that this is just a perceived freedom.. in fact, china had largely remain a communist but disguised under SOE and actually had turn backward to Mao's way during Xi's era... this is very dangerous

but fact remains, HK is china.. thats y i think hongkong's future is doomed.. only way out is to leave hk if they don't agree with communism.
