i jus banzai down the descent without anything... jerzey zipper open fully somemore...

malaysia is shit hot la... never experienced any situation so cold that i tak boleh tahan... pneumonia is definitely a no happen over here...

my worst day pun... pakai arm warmer only...the hands too cold and very hard to grab the brakes.
*
In European races, they bomb downhill at close to 100km/h & they climb mountains like 6000+ feet... Even in Peninsular Malaysia, the only paved road high enuff is Genting.... & the newspaper trick is good for descent only... if U ride in the cold rain with newspaper stuffed underneath Ur jersey... I dun think it works... tongue.gif

Which brings me to one funny memory.... see, back in my cycling days, Bicyling was the only cycling magazine U can find in the local market... so I read in there that the pros in the Tour de France descends at close 100km/h. One of my friends was so pissed & didn't believe me, that during our ride to Genting, he was trying very hard to get 100km/h during the descent, which of course he failed.... & to prove to me that it was impossible... so I told him, it was the pros who did it, on a long descent & on flat, clear roads.. he still didn't believe me so I told him it was up to him...it was in the magazine & I didn't say that I did it.... tongue.gif tongue.gif That guy is now the national BMX coach...with former Asian kilo champ Rizal Tisin one of his athletes....

Er.. some observation i done to myself.

FYI, i have no problem riding my Giant TCR SL3 when i brought it. in fact, im loving it when im riding it.

Why?

bcoz i'm been riding bike since small. apa-apa macam punya bikes i ride before. started with kid bike, cycle around in my small hometown... then when growing, change to bigger bike, normal bicycle, with front basket....

then, my mum's bike... my grandpa bike (the big wheels, black color bike) then finally mountain bike.... and somehow, i found there's old roadbike (steel) in store... then start riding.

when i'm 1st riding the roadbike, im really dont like the bending... but it's gives me speeds... im start to love it.

for newbie, unless you know what's your direction, your commitment towards your goal, else forget everything, just get few hundreds roadbike to ride....

where to find few hundreds roadbike you might ask. I dont know any specific one in KL, but you can go to your neighborhood's normal bike shop asking.

last time, when i "bising-bising" want to get mountain bike back in my hometown, i selected the model that's cost RM450... the bike owner have to order as he never bring in the bike. waited dont know how many days, finally i got my bike, was gila babi happy!

that's my cycling 2cent worth of experience.

My first real roadbike cost RM340, back in 1991. That bike, with some modifications, got me into the SUKOM project after I got some good results in the SUKOM Zon Tengah trials in 1993 (top 10 in the TT, 8th in road race). It had 6 speed freewheel (not even a cassette), downtube shifters, the rear wheel was 28" & the front 27" & toeclip pedals... tongue.gif

After I got into the Sukom project, I managed to save enuff money to buy a fake Colnago frame from Joo Ngan... also upgraded to clipless pedals...I went to the 1994 Sukma on that frame. After that I got myself a Giant Cadex CFR-1, upgraded to STI dual control & 8 speed drivetrain. I rode the 1996 Sukma with that bike.... I wished I had kept the bike... sold it off in 2001.. now itching to get back on a road bike... thinking on getting Specialized Allez 105 or Boardman Team Road 105... maybe early next year...

haha.. RM340... the time when chicken rice was still under RM2.50 per plate la... now RM340, carrefour also don't have bicycle to buy... maybe the kiddie ones...

i used to frequent edwin's shop to get the fake GT triple triangle MTB frames too.. haha... no money buy GT or Gary Fisher back then la....

the allez 105 is kinda pricy... but heard it's not a badly made frame especially if you get the E5 ones over the standard A1...

my favvy aluminum bike will always be the canyon AL9.0 ultimate...
*
My former teammate/mechanic/coach is the senior sales technician/bg bike fitter @ Specialized store... I know the Allez is kinda pricey, but the quality is there, the 2012 version is all E5 frame & the 2013 version is gonna be much more expensive & lighter. Of course there are other options, but the Allez & Boardman Team Road is currently my top choices. But maybe I've gotta postpone the acquisition until later this year... sad.gif

some Q on nutrition:

people normally willing to spend without doubt when paying for alcholol, for smoking, for gambling and etc etc....

but when come to nutrition, people have 101% doubt on it specially supplements.

How we as cyclist can have enough of nutrition to sustain our long ride? by eating more natural foods? but will it sufficient?

If our body did not get sufficient nutrition, our cycling wont be improve to next level. it's about train smart. but how?
*
I used to eat Cloud 9 for my feeding. Bananas will spoil easily, unless it was supplied by the team. When I was training on my own I relied on Cloud 9. Those days not a single energy bar/gel can be found in Malaysia, unless the team brought it in. No GNC, Guardian was around, but they dun sell energy bars... the only brand I can remember was Shaklee. Even then it was only sold thru agents...

So how you guys did the standing up? just stand up and ride?

Wondering if the clipless pedal tension setting for everyone is tight(need more strenght to unclip) or light(easy exit)? For me i just put tension as light as pedal allow for to allow me to clip out easier.
*
Upshift 1 or 2 cogs, stand up & rock Ur bike. Dun move Urself from right to left, I've seen ppl doing it. On long climbs with gradual inclines, it's more economical to sit down & push, but every 10 mins or so upshift & stand to stretch Ur legs & back. U need to upshift becoz naturally standing will generate more power & Ur cadence will increase.

Dun worry too much about the clipless pedals la, in most cases, in case something happen, Ur feet will automatically be disengaged... even at the strongest setting. Ur lucky ppl these days dun really go thru the toeclip & straps era... tongue.gif U shud be more worried about the cleats. Old or worn out cleats will be easier to disengage, intentionally or accidentally...

get it now. u don't run in slippers until u can do sub 1hr 10K, only then buy running shoes, do u?
clipless pedals will help u to use all muscles when u cycle (push n pull). without clipless pedals, u will only push.
don't think or worry too much. people fall bcoz they are too busy thinking, rather than just doing it.

from 3xx to 1k. there's no usual price. depends on type; carbon or nylon or carbon reinforced, velcro or buckle or boa, two straps or 3 straps, etc....

not really sure what's the cheapest now. years ago, shimano used to have rm180 shoes
*
Just to share to y'all newbies here.. during my day, the cheapest cycling shoes was Pro Specs at RM90.. simple black one with laces, I bought the 2nd cheapest one.. actually I gift from my parents after my SRP.. RM160, brand was Patrick, single velcro strap... I still have that shoes... Those were the days when the most expensive cycling shoes was Shimano SH210 I think, full carbon sole, 3 velcro straps, SPD-only.. RM600. My first shoes was Patrick... I've used Shimano, Gaerne, Sidi..

oic.. nod.gif looks like will need to add that into the list of essential accessories in getting a bike..thanks for the heads up
*
Cycling shoes shud be an essential item, not accessory. The difference of using a normal shoe & cycling shoe is just to great just to be an accessory item. But I agree that it might be 2nd on the list of essential items, 1st being helmet, 2nd shoes, 3rd sunglasses... some ppl spend on sunglasses 1st... doh.gif

Use contact lens la... much, much cheaper... just make sure U dun use those Kpop colored contacts sold in pasar malam... tongue.gif

I wear prescription specs with the power of about 200 when I was riding, but I never bothered to wear them during training.. the rest of the team was always very nervous when I got to the front of the paceline.. until 1998 when I discovered contact lens, been using that ever since.

I never had the money to buy branded glasses, even when I was with Selangor. So I used pasar malam ones, very similar to the glasses that was all the rage at that time, Briko Shot. Just before Sukma 96 Selangor paid our allowances in advance, so I got myself 2 Brikos, Zen & a casual one. Later on I bought Briko Stinger. I dun think Briko is still in the market though. Now I got Oakley Mframe (used to be known as Mumbo) Livestrong for running..& another Oakley Scalpel Livestrong for casual uses... sold off my Ducati Monsterdog..

briko was at a time popular i think due to marco pantani during the 90s... pretty sure they are still around.. but not a big presence here in malaysia.. they are practically over-ran by the oakley and watchamacallit...
Briko was made popular beginning in 1993 by none other than Cipollini.. with the Shot. The Shot looks more like goggles than sunglasses.. Briko's lens are more scratch resistant than Oakleys, the reason why I bought them. In the 90s they also made one of the more popular aero helmets, worn by Tony Rominger during his 1995 hour record attempt that, for me was still the best ever, 55.9 km using a normal track bike with dual discs & aero bar.. Selangor team then acquired 4 of those helmets, so we had to share la.. I get to use it for my kilo events...

wow.. was it that far back? i only remembered the one where it looked like those aircraft goggles.. 2 big round pieces that pantani and now that you mentioned.. i think i saw lion king used it in his mercatone uno years as well...

the goggle one you mentioned is really way way back... haha...

well... he was the one who said "if i wasn't a professional cyclist... i would be a porn star".. he has always been the trendsetter in the peloton with his color matched bike and jerseys... haha
if i look like a jap or korean... those dudes must be god damn blind...
Well, he is Italian... tongue.gif Mercatone Uno ? No no.. much earlier than that... in 93 he was riding for GB-MG Boys.. same team as Johan Museeuw..

I once bought Cipo's American flag shorts (the one he wore in 1997 when he won like 2-3 stages in the opening week, with Saeco). I didn't think much of it.. but then my teammates was laughing at me.. so I returned it & changed to MG-Technogym shorts... Tan of Bikepro was really unhappy when I brought that shorts back to him !!
