Hey guys, I'm no cyclist, hopefully YET. Am having some thoughts over joining the cycling circle.

I know that road bikes don't come cheap and they come in various customizable stuffs. Say I'm looking for a decent bike to get myself started, what should I emphasize and how much should I allocate?

Thanks

Decent is a hard to define thing.

There is decent for rich people, decent for middle range, decent for barely surviving class. In this case, it is good to set a limit for yourself first. How much are you willing to part with at maximum and start from there.

Do you have any friends who is cycling, have you tried to loan their bikes out for a spin? What sort of riding you are expecting to do? Purely flat fast rides, climbs, mixture veering towards climbing more?

It's all about expectations and compromises if you have a $ limit.

Typing with iPad was bad, haha, too lazy to type everything out. tongue.gif

Yeah, I have got feedbacks from bicycle shops saying that what I want is very vague but I do not trust them enough to provide them with every single details since I do want to take care of my own wallet as well haha.

My main intention of going cycling is to relive my 300 bucks mountain bike cycling experience during my secondary days and moreover I have always had this soft spot towards mechanical stuffs and sports.

Plenty of intentions really but mostly it's for speed, I can make about 2 days/week for cycling, still haven't got any idea if I would like to join any cycling group but I'd most definitely want this to be a sustainable thing since I will be spending thousands of Ringgit on my first bike.

One major concern about picking biking up is my initial cost as well as the cost to maintain the interest, I have other expensive hobbies as well LOL such as cars.

Thanks butthead, it pretty much clarifies what I am looking at. Time to do some research over the brands as well as the difference between Sora, Tiagra and 105.

How's Merida BTW? I hear it does give pretty good value in terms of money spent?

i am assuming that it is a first bike... getting it all right on the first bike is pretty impossible unless you have friends bike to be a reference point...

what feels right on showroom floors will feel a bit odd when you actually ride it... and then the equation of you improving down the road is another thing you have to add....

so, it's the question of, is it safer to get a larger or smaller frame size??? smaller in my thinking as you can extend things upwards and downwards on things too small... but you cannot shrink oversized stuff...

just like cooking... lesser salt is better as you can salt it after finish cooking...too much salt, and you cannot take it out later...

geometry... is another question... basically... it is whether you want aggressive competitive frames or comfortable long head tube touring geometry? but then... you most probably would not understand the difference until sometime down the road...

first bike is always gonna be a guinea pig (a bit)...

if you should be buying a 49 and the shop force a 56 on you because that is what they have... that is what you should not buy... if a 51 or maybe even a 47... depends on how you feel on the bike... if you are that desperate to get a bike... your desperation will make the decision for you...

Added on October 30, 2012, 8:14 pm

there is... like guru bikes or parlee.. .they send you to their fit studios before they sell you a frame...

parless is a bit more flexible as they can even tune the seat and head tubes angles a slight bit... sort of half custom frame... too tedious, no one wants to do it for cheap...

Parless Z5 retails for over 3k not sure Euro or USD frame alone mind you...doesn't come cheap...

I went to this specialized store and they did a measurement, no size so I didn't get em. Pretty honest sales guy to be honest. But tight pocket that time didn't help haha.

slightly on the pricey side... novelty just due to a carbon seatstay...trying to rid old stock as air is not in colnago line up anymore in 2013 range...
Yeah, it's definitely on the pricey side, I guess I will give Neilpryde a check. Best value for money brands for entry bikes as well as used value, which would you recommend to check?

Trek? Giant? Neilpryde? Specialized? Fuji? Polygon?

don't rush... rush is where you get into rash decisions you might regret later...

actually... you already know the brand... browse their site and see what you like...

Neipryde - Velocipede Works
http://www.neilprydebikes.com/index.php

Merida - PedalSpot
http://www.merida-bikes.com/en_int/cms/216...road-fitness_13

Scott - Bike Pro or KH Cycle
http://www.scott-sports.com/global/en/cate...BikesRoad_2013/

Fuji - GH Speedbikes, maybe?
http://www.fujibikes.com/#

Phone Directory
http://www.baikbike.com/bicycle-shops/

Call them up and see if they have it, retail price (they won't discount you on phone). If you can narrow it down on phone, then drive there and take a look at it for yourself. Saves time and petrol.

Remember to ask if 2012 or 2013 model since you are at a time where they are taking in new stocks of newly launched bikes.

solvable by a phone call... if price is already not right on the phone... it won't be right at the shop... unless there is a 50% discount on their retail tag...

ARGHHHH I'm torn between 105 and Tiagra....

The difference in price is almost 1000 Ringgit. Economically, I'd be good with Tiagra since I'm just a beginner but I wouldn't want to be upgrading anytime soon.

So taikors taikors sekalian, I'd like to ask:

- Which would be more feasible in your opinion? 105 or Tiagra? Or maybe SORA tongue.gif

- How much does it cost to go to 105 or Ultegra? In terms of group set as well as other components such as brakes, cassettes, etc.

oh ya, I saw a decent Trigon with carbon frame, Tiagra group set. Around 4k+ but am not so keen since I'm not sure how good quality are they tongue.gif

Another one, Focus Variado 1.0, 4.3k hehehe

Aster, tried to do plenty of research but only came back with....nothing much except that they manufacture frames for BMC. How true is that, I don't know :/

Not worried about the brand but more concern about the stiffness and the weight of the aluminium.

You drive and jam all the way to Gym place and work out stationary inside the room... seems legit...

Better cycling around your place...
Hahaha, i go gym for weights, hate doing stationary cardio activities.

Running is a bore to me and being a speedster I kinda want to look into cycling, hehe

Refer to this post, Speedster S40, should be ~RM2500 new. IMO suitable for general use  smile.gif

Specs

From S40 to Foil......that's quite a significant upgrade......kakakaka

I've narrowed down my choices to, if I'm set on the 105 route that is hehe:

Astar: Alloy frame and FULL 105 group set

*roughly 3.8k

Fuji Roubaix 1.3: Pretty much FULL 105 parts, but with no carbon seat post, oh well

*haven't enquired but price shouldn't be too far from 4k

Merida Race Lite 904: Carbon fork, carbon seat post but Tiagra Cassette

*roughly 4.1k

Scott Speedster S20: Similar to Merida but the name sounds nicer to me tongue.gif

*roughly 4.2k

4 bikes, 4 choices. Haven't seen GIANT yet!!!! HAHAHAHAHA

All these bike survey and I forgot about essential clothings, hahahahhahahahahhaa.

Shoes, helmets and shorts. Jersey and glasses will remain as luxuries, time to look at other options as the essentials aren't cheap.

nothing can help but study and understanding it yourself...

http://www.calfeedesign.com/tech-papers/gr...f-carbon-fiber/

the grade of the carbon cloth is not all... knowing how to lay layers of this cloth in the right place and the right direction is the key to making a stiff and light frame... doing it even better will make a frame that is stiff, light and yielding to the correct forces in the right place...

of course there are other factors like the epoxy / resin, how the tubes are bonded and baked, inflation bladders to keep the inside of tubes smooth and creating internal ribs along the tubes to increase strength... cycling is still learning CF and could learn a lot more from the autosports industry like F1 which is way advanced and almost rivaling the aerospace industry..

this is detailed in the piece by cervelo, i believe written by damon rinnard

http://www.cervelo.com/en/engineering/ask-...of-modulus.html
*
Ya, I did learn that from my very expensive hobby haha. Which is why I'm not too hung up by the carbon frame fact. Am looking to test out this hobby first so I'm looking at a basic entry level Tiagra or 105 group set. Obviously the more things the better hehe. I want to appreciate cycling as well as the upgrading process. If I were to buy the best titanium bike but no skills or unfit, it'd be pretty pointless andwill lose the passion very quickly.

That being said, one thing I also learn when it comes to stuffs like these, there can never be no upgrades or sufficiency. I can give you an aventador, you will still add on a twin turbo setup in future. That's guy's hobbies to you. Even runners are constantly looking for new vibrams or LG4 or new shoes, it will never stop. Only thing that is stopping is your wallet and bank account. Hehe

Oh wow!

http://bikeprobicycle.com/v2/prod-details....oduct#innerProd

BMC 2011 SR01, with Ultegra groupset

http://www.h2c.com.my/roadcomp.jpg

Boardman Road Comp, with SRAM Apex

Okay, do not know much about SRAMs since I've been reading more about Shimano parts, but it's 10 speed IIRC.

These two are old bikes but nicer brands, a 2013 Scott S20 and Merida Race Lite 904 would set me back around that price range as well, (At least according to the guy on the phone la)

What would usually be the setback when it comes to older bikes?

you better ask first... the bike might not be even around anymore... and sizing problems since it's an old bike with limited stock in hand?

the last year 105 SR01 already is over RM5k... you make a guess..

Yeah I guess. Sizing could be an issue oh well :/ will take your advice and not rush into any decision, still looking around and weighing my option. smile.gif
