My first job as an automotive engineer for a local vendor, got paid at 1.8k. After 5 years with the company my salary only went up to 2.8k max. Saw people around me even younger people earning more. (I always think younger generations are luckier generations). I still remember this Martrade officer once patronized me for being an "engineer kilang tak laku" but i just smiled. Kept on thinking "belum rezeki aku" and I know I can be better if granted the opportunity.
After 5 years i've decided to quit and go for a masters program abroad (Msc engineering management, in uk). It was a big life decision as I have no sponsorship, not from rich family, and only have my savings to support me (i not a big spender, sustained life with minimal spending & save the rest). Took all my life savings and used it to pay tuition fees. Work part time while studying as i need £ to survive (pay rent & eat). Did a lot of odd jobs (cafeteria assistant, dishwasher, shop assistant, boxes & stuff mover to container, farm work, etc.) i was even given task to wash cows during the farm work in Kent. But its all fun and good experience altogether.
Completed MSc in 1 year, spent the next year continuing odd jobs while trying to find a permanent professional job there, but failed (David Cameron was just elected PM and his manifesto was to eradicate foreign worker influx). Went back to Malaysia and apply for jobs. I remembered I went back with only RM2,240 savings to sustain until i get a job & 1st month salary.. And it all reduced to RM40 when i got swindled by this stoopid phishing bank website (ok, i was stoopid too to believe the scam). So I have no choice but to borrow RM500 from a friend to survive. Its all back to square one just like after finished degree (but with extra 7 yrs older & no money). Finally secured the job, and paid my friend back with my first salary.
Less than 2 years with the company, I took up all the challenges thrown at me and rose up the ranks beating the other seniors. Set the company's record to be selected for foreign work assignment abroad after less than 2 years of service. I guess i am lucky enough to earn what I am earning now in a span of 2 years, but thats life, full of surprises & magic, you never know what will happen. All the hardwork & sacrifices now seems so sweet.
The reason I'm writing this long story is not really to share how much i made, but rather to share the experience with those who think they are unlucky. Its not about luck, so go create your own luck. Always believe in yourself & your capability. Always have a positive mindset. Never feel jealous of other people's achievement, or gain, but set a positive competition for your own self to be equally as good or even better. Always have good intentions and help people around you irrespective of ages, race, culture, etc. Never ever give up, and one day you will make it.
Cheers !!
Your story, provided real, is truly aspiring.
