Now this is really interesting. I wonder, why mod the 890 to resemble other headphones? Its like modding the K701 to sound like the HD650... in fact why not just get the HD650?

From my experience, the Beyer DT990 and SR80 have really good bass impact. The Beyer is more balanced, as the SR80's bass sometimes covers up the mids. Care to explain what mods done on the 890 and also how it resembles the SR80?

And seeing the HP890 hype until someone is selling them for RM350, the price difference between the 890 and SR80 is actually less than RM30

I heard of iahos' stock HP890 before. Bass is strong but not as impactful and tight as the SR80. The 890 is a little forward sounding, no where near SR80; and the soundstage of 890 is expansive. Me and Hanxz have the same findings during the meet, and we prefer our SR80 over the 890; yet we're both surprised with the performance of HP1000 instead.

I'll be looking forward to try this "modded" 890 during the 2nd meet.

p/s: no point comparing the price of a broken 890 with a new SR80. Do note that the 890 retails at close to RM300 at Harvey Norman a year ago before it was discontinued. Comparing the retail prices of both headphones, the difference is around RM100.

you sounded sarcastic don't you? I own the SR80 for quite some time and i got used to its sound signature (since i'm in front of my PC for over 12 hours/day, life as a programming student is tough). Moreover Grado has a very distinct and unique sound signature; so the sonic differences were obvious when it comes to comparison with other headphones. But if you ask me to compare SR80 to SR125 or 225, i don't think i can differentiate them easily.

SR80 has stronger and harder bass compared to SR60. SR80, 125, and 225 all sounded kindda same to me. I didn't bother to listen to SR125 and above properly as they are out of my budget and listening to them too long will hurt my wallet more. But then, SR325 is definitely a step above the SR80. Clarity is damn good, and the bass is more "musical" to my ears. Anyway, i'm already shifted out of Grado camp

Lolz if it is a 890 with soundstage, then it won't be considered as similar to a Grado anymore right? Imho, the 890 mod might result in more forward sound (i assume the removal of the foam in front of the driver?), and stronger bass? A stock 890 already has a little forwardness in its sound signature, so i'm not surprised if a modded one sound close to a SR80.

You know what extreme modding is? An example will be modding a Sennheiser to sound like a Grado

during the 1st meet, the first headphones i'd grabbed was the 890!
