Tunku Ismail predicts big things for Johor and Johor FC

JOHOR BARU: Watch out for Johor next season.
Johor FA president Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim is predicting “big things” for both the Johor and Johor FC football teams next season.
He said the FA plan to strengthen both teams and have identified 15 players, including two South Americans.
“Our priority is to bring back Johor-born footballers who are plying their trade with other teams and we will also sign two star players from South America,” he said after launching the Johor Football League at Istana Bukit Pelangi on Thursday.
“Argentinian and Brazilian footballers are very good and can adapt to our weather quickly compared to other foreign players.”
He, however, declined to name the two foreign stars, saying all will be revealed after the Johor FA’s annual general meeting in early November.
Tunku Ismail, however, gave a broad hint on the local players he had in mind for the Johor teams.
“I am a big fan of national skipper Mohd Safiq Rahim and Kelantan forward Norshahrul Idlan Talaha … they are intelligent players,” he said.
As for financial support, Tunku Ismail said that 15 local and international companies have agreed to sponsor Johor, including India largest car manufacturer Tata Motors.
The FA have also set targets for the two teams: Johor to be promoted to the Super League and Johor FC to either win the Super League or do well in the FA Cup and Malaysia Cup.
“I want both teams to battle for honours and be consistent – just like Selangor, who always finished in the top four and do very well in the Malaysia Cup, and Kelantan who have won many trophies in the last couple of years,” he said.
Tunku Ismail also expressed his wish for the Johor FA to take over the management of the Larkin Stadium from the state sports council next season.
He described the condition of the stadium as “quite bad” as there is no proper ventilation in the players’ changing rooms and no proper seats at the stands.
“If the Johor Sports Council have no funds to maintain the stadium, they should give it to the FA and we will upgrade it and take care of the historic venue,” he said.
