Be more professional, Ahmad tells state FAs

KEMAMAN: Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek wants all state FAs to be more professional, especially in managing the teams.

In the wake of the recent Terengganu FA disciplinary action against coach Peter Butler and three players, which many deemed unfair, Ahmad Shabery said it was high time the states change their management style.

“We have entered the professional era in football … the players are professional but the management is still way behind.

“The style of football management in the country is suitable for the amateur era but not now,” he said after launching the state level beach volleyball competition in Monica Bay here yesterday.

He was asked to comment on the disciplinary action by Terengganu FA, which led to a six-month suspension of Butler and RM1,000 fines for players Ismail Faruqi, Muslim Ahmad and Ahmad Sharbinee Allawee.

Ahmad Shabery urged all teams’ management to change with the times and act as a chief executive officer of a company would.

“The management must look on ways to improve the team as well as the support of fans. Fans support the teams based on the performance and the love for their team … the management must get their house in order before that could happen,” he said.

Ahmad Shabery, who is also Kemaman MP, said he has been following the developments in Terengganu FA closely.

“The guideline to elevate our local football league to the top level requires mainly for the management to be professional,” he said.
