You need to phrase it properly. The sentence is too long as it is now. That aside, keep it up bro! biggrin.gif

Chapter 1: Into the depths I go

As Ginny ends her flirty conversation with that treasure hunter, she slides her hand up his thigh suggestively. Her conversation with him was encouraging, to find treasures in her rare cave where men lost themselves. This cave itself is something of a rare occurrence, opening once every two weeks, but what Ginny wants him to look for in there isn’t the riches of the treasure, what she wants are the demon spawns they can produce in there. After dispatching a shadow raven off to notify her fellow demon hunters about her journey, she gave a slight sigh before dipping themselves together into the darkness of the cave.

Haiyo... derailed until dunno go where ady the thread... >.<"

I got one suggestion... since already derailed so far ady.. why don't we each post one paragraph to advance the story. Rules:

1. We can introduce new characters.
2. We can kill off only characters that we have created before. Other characters by other people cannot be killed off. They can be injured though.
3. Anything can happen but not more than 150 words.
4. Cannot post twice in a sequence. Must wait for at least one other person to post before you post again.

How? Any takers? If not just ignore this... haha.

Ok. Here goes... first a re-post of the opening paragraph from TS:

Chapter 1: Into the depths I go

As Ginny ends her conversation with that treasure hunter, she slides her hood back on shielding her face off the harsh sunlight of the dessert, her conversation with him wasn’t encouraging, rumors are that many that went in there to find treasures in this rare cave lost their lives, this cave itself is something of a rare occurrence, opening once every 100 years, but what Ginny was looking for in there isn’t the riches of the treasure, what she wants are the death of the demon spawns lurking in there. After dispatching a shadow raven off to notify her fellow demon hunters about her journey, she gave a slight sigh before dipping herself into the darkness of the cave.

As she step into the darkness, the sight and stench of rotting carcasses was strewn everywhere, she doesn’t seems perturbed by this, such was a normal scene for people like her, as she scans the surroundings, she walked towards a body that looked rather fresh;” hmm…looks at least 3 days old before he died”, as she feel the wound marks around the corpse with her dark gloved hands;“a lacuni’s blade wound, interesting…”, her mind wandered off abit, her past experiences with lacuni’s weren’t pleasant, her thoughts of Jostlin started rushing back, she snapped out of it;”focus Ginny”! As she stood, her eyes fell on some fresh footprints in the thickening dust, she spotted a trail leading up towards the depths of this hell hole;”looks like they left their meal half done, bold enough not to cover their tracks as the hunters…”, flipping out her concealed crossbow, she loaded a bolt, tip shimmering with a rune inscribed on it,”this time I’ll be the hunter and you shall be my prey lacuni”!

and my addition biggrin.gif :

Cassie watched as the female Demon Hunter disappeared into the cave. So she was not the first one to find this cave of legends. It matters not. Demon hunters crave for nothing but the destruction of demons and their kinds.

'All the better for me,' Cassie thought. She would let the demon hunter clear the path ahead of her. That would make the journey that much easier. Stories of untold wealth and treasures that await anyone daring enough to venture into the caves have been repeated so many times that they have taken on a life of their own. Cassie is sure that she herself and the demon hunter will not be the only ones to visit the cave. Her only hope is that there's enough to satisfy everyone inside those tunnels. She came not for the gold nor gems. She came here seeking the knowledge of the ancients. Tomes of the arcane arts to be precise.

As she made her way into the cave, Cassie could not help but notice that the demon hunter looked curvy despite the armor she was wearing. Goosebumps appeared on her skin as a tingling sensation shot down Cassie's spine as she allowed herself a moment of indulgence into imagining how the demon hunter would look like without her armor on. As the mental picture flashed through her mind, Cassie made a conscious effort to push it to the back of her mind.

'Business first. Pleasure later,' she reminded herself as she fished out her magical source and invoked a spell to make it glow so as to light her way into the dark tunnels.

It wasn't long after entering the cave that Cassie realized that the cave was in fact man-made. Ancient architectural methods long lost to the passing of time. She raised her magical source high and risked a little more light. The pale blue glow filled the chamber and she marvelled at the beauty of the place.

Her awe of the place was suddenly interrupted when she felt the presence of another magic user. Stopped dead in her tracks, Cassie concentrated. The presence was masked. Whoever it was, this magic user is no novice and Cassie was sure that it wasn't the demon hunter.

'Necromancy!' Cassie suddenly realized. This form of magic have long lost favor among the current users. Like herself, new generations of magic users prefers elemental magic. This is an ancient art and the fact that the user could mask his presence shows that the user was more than adept at this.

Cassie immediately invoked another spell that increased her movement speed and homed in onto the source of the necromancy. As she sped through the corridors and chambers, a small smile formed on her lips. Battling another magic user will be most interesting. As Cassie neared the source of the magic, an explosion rocked the whole cavernous structure. Battle has been joined. No doubt it was the demon hunter.

The smile on Cassie's lips widened. Things just got a whole lot more interesting. Would she be forced to choose sides or would she be battling both combatants? As she neared a huge doorway, she could see the demon hunter standing inside a huge multi-story chamber gazing at something on one of the upper floors. Cassie also caught the tail end of the conversation, "..or are you a succubus?"

Cassie stopped a few steps into the chambers and finally saw the necromancer on the second level. She knew very well that by now both the necromancer and the demon hunter were already aware of her presence. A quick scan and a few deliberate steps later, Cassie had positioned herself so that she was facing both of them and can monitor both of their movements with ease.

"Typical of a male chauvinist," Cassie announced, directing her remarks at the necromancer. "Always starting the party without me!" As Cassie finished her sentence, she quickly unleashed an arcane bolt in the direction of the necromancer. The purple energy bolt was already halfway across the chambers and accelerating quickly towards its target. Cassie hoped that the bolt would catch the necromancer by surprise.

What a hot headed brat”, the necromancer thought, casting a quick spell on his dark skeletal shield, he deflected the arcane bolts away, dropping his mace by his side, he drew a sacrificial dagger, “Such novice magic won’t stop me brat”! the necromancer laughed as he cut a wound on his shield arm to draw blood for a spell, before he could finish, Ginny drew out a second crossbow aiming at both the necromancer and the newcomer, ”I would suggest both of you to stop your duels here, my patience is short” Ginny warned, she wasn’t too keen to be in between a magic duels, the newcomer is a familiar sight to her, wizards were known to be a native of Caldeum, this one looks really young for one, but she wouldn’t underestimate any wizard considering how their reputation were.

Irritated, the necromancer healed his wound and sheathed his dagger, “So to what do I owe the pleasure of this visit from two guests? Both of you owe me some explanation considering this is MY domain, I don’t take trespassers lightly” the necromancer demanded.

Before Ginny could reply, the wizard teleported right next to her, hugging her, pressing her chest against hers grinning slyly, “im her guardian”! Cassie replied mischievously.

Blushing and surprised, Ginny shouted angrily;”What”?! I do not know who you are at all! This isn’t a game”!

Looking on while both ladies were arguing, the necromancer thought to himself; “this is such a bad time to be awake from a magical slumber”, foreseeing a much more complicated situation with the sudden appearance of two strangers in his necropolis.

Cassie was taken aback when the arcane bolt was so easily deflected away by the necromancer. Truly this was one formidable adversary. Cassie knew immediately that pitting her skills against this necromancer would only result in her own defeat. Her mind raced to find another solution.

”I would suggest both of you to stop your duels here, my patience is short!” were the words coming from the demon hunter, crossbows raised and ready to fire.

Cassie was even more surprised to see the necromancer stopped his spell at this comment. This character was so unlike those she had heard in countless stories. Necromancers are supposed to be evil and hell bent on destruction. Well, supposed was the key word here.

“So to what do I owe the pleasure of this visit from two guests? Both of you owe me some explanation considering this is MY domain, I don’t take trespassers lightly,” the necromancer asked.

Cassie saw her chance. Quickly teleporting to the demon hunter's side, Cassie hugged her tight, completely taking the demon hunter by surprise. "I'm her guardian!" she announced cheekily. Cassie could feel the cold metal armor pressing hard against her bosom, her own thick silk robes barely offering any cushion against the metal mesh.

”What?!” the demon hunter protested, completely unable to respond in any coherent manner. "I do not know who you are at all! This isn’t a game!"

Mentally reciting a spell, Cassie quickly linked her mind with the demon hunter's so that they could communicate telepathically. "Stop protesting!" Cassie mentally urged the demon hunter.

"This necromancer is way more skillful than I have expected," Cassie continued telepatically. "If you do not play along, we will be dead in a short while! He is way above both you and I. If we are to take him, the only chance is to work together!"

Feeling that the demon hunter's resistance began to wane, Cassie released her hold on her. Out loud she spoke, "Oh! Come on, milady! You cannot still be angry at me for what happened last night, can you?"

The demon hunter looked confused but quickly played along, "You are quite right! I am still angry!"

Cassie let go of a breath she did not realized she was holding, relieved that the demon hunter is playing along. Putting on her best smile, she turned towards the necromancer who looks irritated.

"Oh! Please pardon our intrusion," Cassie said in as sweet a voice as she could muster. "You see, my lady here is chasing some demons and we were led into this cave. We got separated and when I heard the explosion, I feared the worst. It's an honest mistake!"

"What nonsense!" the necromancer replied haughtily. "There're no demons here.."

No sooner had the words left the necromancer's mouth, a blood curdling roar echoed through the chamber. A split second later half a dozen lacunis led by a huge dual-blade wielding leader broke into the chamber, hungry for blood. Fireballs started to rain down on Cassie and the demon hunter.

Cassie quickly turned and threw herself at the demon hunter and embraced her tightly again as a semi-transparent dome appeared over them. She had cast a slow-time spell. The raining fireball slowed and she was able to drag the demon hunter out of harm's way.

Cassie released the demon hunter and their eyes met for a moment. Cassie winked at her and flashed her a quick smile. Telepathically she commented to the demon hunter, "You smell really nice! But let's get rid of these beasts first, all right?"

With that she turned towards the nearest lacuni and released a couple of quick arcane bolts.

As suddenly as they appeared, the lacunis disappeared. Cassie took a quick look around and found that the huge lacuni leader had fallen. Standing over it was the equally huge fire golem that had started to crumble away as the magic that summoned it dissipated.

Truly, this necromancer was not to be trifled with. Quickly snapping out of it, Cassie spoke to the necromancer.

"See? Those wretched beasts are what drew us in here. We truly did not mean to intrude," Cassie built upon her first lie.

The necromancer seemed unconvinced but she could see that his hostility towards them drop a notch. The demon hunter now stepped out of the shadows which hid her well.

"Truly it was those lacunis that I was after," the demon hunter spoke. It was not a lie after all. It just wasn't the whole truth.

"Very well then, " the necromancer finally said. "I shall pardon your insolence for this time but it intrigues me that even lowly lacunis dared to encroach upon my domain. What has happened in the world outside? Might I have slumbered too long and not aware of events that I should be concerned about?"

Cassie made her way to stand beside the demon hunter. One has to keep up appearances after all if one wishes to keep the deceit going.

"Oh, you truly did not know?" Cassie asked when she heard the necromancer's question. "Well, I'm a bit vague on the details but word has it that a lord of the burning hells is now walking the very surface of Sanctuary as we speak. We know not of their design but it is fact that all kinds of beasts have been corrupted and now wreaks havoc where ever they can be found."

"Really?" the necromancer asked in surprise.

"Yes," Cassie answered. "We will be taking our leave now. Please accept our apology for the intrusion. We will bother you no more," Cassie added and quietly took the demon hunter's hand to start leading her away.

"If I may just have one request before you leave," the necromancer said, his voice laced with threat. "Would you be so kind as to stay for dinner and tell me about this latest development. I am most interested in it. It has been long since I have had guests and even longer still when it comes to guests as attractive as you both."

Cassie stopped dead in her tracks. The threat was clear. They are not just going to walk away from this. She had started the lie and it would not be fair to drag the demon hunter into all this.

"Why I would be glad to tell you all I know," Cassie spoke before the demon hunter can say anything and spell doom for both of them. "But please excuse milady. She has other urgent matters to attend to. Isn't that right, milady? I shall meet you back in Caldeum after dinner," Cassie said, turning to the demon hunter. Cassie looked staight at the demon hunter, pleading with her to go now before it's too late using her eyes.

Ok. I'm hijacking this thread. I'm trying to revive this one.

Bee, hope you don't mind. smile.gif

Here's the long awaited next part...

*********

"So it's highly possible that Belial, the Lord of Lies is somehow having a hold over the palace in Caldeum," Cassie informed her host. For the past half hour, she has been sitting uneasily across the table from the necromancer who had inexplicably prepared a lavish dinner spread for them.

"Is that so?" Lord Drakken replied.

"That's the perception out there," Cassie said, trying to avoid Drakken's gaze. She knows that he's paying scant attention to their conversation. He's has been eyeing her the moment they had stepped into the room.

Cassie had barely eaten and now that she feels that enough time had passed to avoid a seemingly hasty retreat, she made her attempt to leave. "Well, it has been a splendid dinner," she said forcing a smile. "I really should be going now."

"Why the hurry?" Lord Drakken asked, his tone teasing. "You haven't even had dessert yet."

"No, I really can't," Cassie politely declined and stood up from the table to leave. "I really must be going.."

"Oh, but you must stay for dessert," Drakken insisted, cutting Cassie off. "I insist!"

Cassie felt her legs grow weak. She fell back into her chair. The necromancer's spell is strong. Cassie concentrated and summoning her reserves, stood again and managed a few steps away from the table. "I'm sorry..but I must take my leave.." she said, every word seemingly needing a lot of strength. She made a beeline towards the door out of the large dining chamber.

"Don't you know it's rude to abruptly leave the dining table?" the necromancer teased again and got up. "Especially when your host is not done savouring the meal yet."

Cassie made no attempt to reply. She needed to get out of the room fast. She willed her feet to keep moving despite the weakness that she felt. A few more steps and she stumbled. Then disorientation came over her. She could not even find where the door was. She then heard footsteps closing in.

Drakken walked slowly towards his prey. She could barely stand. He smiled wickedly. His weakening and confusion spells were a lethal combo. Few had ever escaped from them. "Do you really think that I would just let the most delicious bite walk off my plate?" he gloated and let off a maniacal laugh.

Cassie felt the necromancer closing. She focussed hard on keeping her mind clear. When she felt the necromancer right beside her, she unleashed her force wave spell. The blast of energy radiated from her and pushed everything away with deadly force. The necromancer was taken by surprised and barely had time to erect his bone armor to shield himself. Although the blast did not physically harm him, the force had thrown him dozens of feet away from his prey.

As the force wave dissipated, Cassie felt her mind clearing. Her ploy worked. She had broken the necromancer's spells and pushed him some distance away. Quickly getting her bearings as well as onto her feet, Cassie made a dash towards the exit. The doorway neared. Cassie's hopes began to rise. She just might make it. Just as she was about to dash out, suddenly the ground broke and bones sprang forth. The bones quickly ensnared her and at once she felt her energy draining away. The bones now bound both her arms and legs like chains. She could not move.

"Not that easy!" Drakken taunted while laughing and started to walk towards his prey again. This time Cassie was too drained of energy to attempt any more tricks. Drakken stopped right in front of her and grapsed her neck in his hand and lifted her head to face him.

"Generations of magical slumber does unpredictable things even to a necromancer like myself," he gloated. "It has whetted my appetite and taste for a female. And you, my dear, is as delicious as they come!" Drakken said sinisterly as he put both his hands on her shoulders, taking a hold of her robe. Just as he was about to rip the clothes off, a crossbow bolt shot past and hit the ground just inches away from Drakken's foot. The bolt crackled menacingly with electricity.

"The next one goes straight through your head if you don't step away from the wizard!" a voice echoed around the chamber, it's point of origin unknown.

Wokeh... this part can conclude the first of the short stories if you want it to.. haha..

*************

"Ginny!" Cassie thought as she felt Drakken's hands releasing his hold on her robe. Still she was too weak to do anything but feel a bit relieved. Drakken looked up and around the chambers as he backed away from Cassie. The demon hunter had concealed herself well. He could not immediately locate her.

"Well, well, well," Drakken said, still trying to find out where the demon hunter was. "Another morsel has offered herself to me."

"That remains to be seen," came Ginny's cold reply, whose voice now seems to come from a different location from the first statement.

Drakken slowly paced the chamber, searching. "The shadows won't hide you for long huntress," Drakken sneered. Just as the words left his mouth, he suddenly lurched to one side and his hand shot out and grabbed something. Ginny was caught with her neck in the necromancer's grip. He lifted her several inches off the ground.

"Hahahaha! What did I tell you?" Drakken laughed. "You should not mess with a necromancer like me!"

"Well, you should also know that you should not be in such close contact with a demon hunter!" Ginny retorted amidst gasps and Cassie saw a sudden metallic flash around Ginny's torso. The demon hunter had unleash a fan of blades around her. Drakken howled in pain as a blade sliced into his hand that had been holding Ginny. He released his grip. Although the blades could not penetrate Drakken's body armour, it made him lose his grip on Ginny and that was all she needed.

Ginny quickly vaulted over the necromancer, putting herself between him and Cassie and just as quickly she hurled 3 grenades towards Drakken. That made the necromancer jump backwards to avoid the blast. The explosion also raised a thick smoke screen between them.

Without missing a beat, Ginny ran towards Cassie, unsheathed her short sword and hacked the chains of bones away. Once the chains were severed, Cassie could feel her strength returning but she was still too weak to run immediately.

"C'mon Cassie!" Ginny urged. "We need to get out of here! The smoke won't last long!" she said, propping Cassie's arms across her shoulders and lifting her up to her feet.

Drakken's laugh reverberated across the chambers and to the two ladies' horror a huge fiery golem emerged right from the ground at the doorway, blocking their path to freedom. The whole monstrous being was aflame and they could feel the heat from it bearing down at them.

The golem roared, shaking the very walls and ground with its intensity. Ginny turned around to look. Her smoke screen is thinning rapidly. She had no doubt that Drakken would emerge from the smoke at any moment.

"Damn! What do we do now?" Ginny wondered aloud rather than really asking the question. Their situation was bad and rapidly deteriorating.

"Run towards the door!" Cassie said weakly.

"What?! Are you crazy? We can't take that golem down!" Ginny objected.

"She's right you know," came Drakken's voice throught the thinning smoke. Soon he will be right in front of them.

"Trust me!" Cassie said. "And stall Drakken! We have only one shot at this!"

With options fast running out, Ginny had no choice but to go with the plan, suicidal as it may seem. "I hope you know what you're doing!" Ginny said. She quickly recited a chant that unleashed a stampede of shadow beasts towards Drakken voice. That will buy them a few precious seconds.

Ginny then led Cassie towards the door at a dead run, trying hard to ignore the fact that a flaming golem was in their way. Cassie recited a spell and held out her hand towards the golem. A freeze ray shot from her palm and hit one of the golem's knees. Cassie put all her mana into her spell, increasing the cold blast exponentially. The blast froze a small part of the giant golem's knee.

"Shoot at the knee now!" Cassie shouted. Ginny responded by whipping her single handed crossbow out and taking aim. She understood Cassie's plan and they literally have only one shot at it. Steadying her aim as best she can, she fired the bolt along with a muttered prayer.

The bolt flew out and rocketed towards its target. Time seemed to slow. The golem lifted its fiery sword over its head and was about to strike at the 2 figure running towards it. One of its knees were frozen but it could still move pretty well.

The bolt connected with its target and exploded. The frozen knee shattered, effectively breaking the leg into two and the golem found itself tumbling. Desperately trying to find balance, the golem abandoned its targets. Ginny and Cassie literally ran between the golem's legs as it crashed heavily to the ground behind them. The mass of fire and rock now became a barrier that blocked the doorway as Ginny and Cassie ran through. Their plan succeeded but there was no time to celebrate. The two continued to flee until they were safely out of the cave. They did not stop until the cave was out of sight. Then Cassie collapsed. Her energy all spent.

"You came back," Cassie managed weakly as Ginny grabbed her in time to stop her from crashing to the ground.

"Couldn't just leave you to that monster back there," Ginny replied. All Cassie could manage was a weak smile before blacking out.

No Light Without Darkness

Cassie slowly opened her eyes. Soft light filled her sight. As she allowed her eyes to adjust, she felt the softness beneath her. A bed. Slowly she saw the roof over the bed. It was wooden and in fine condition. She must be at a tavern, she surmised. It was bright outside the window. The white translucent curtains drawn across the window filtered the sun and the room was awashed with the soft light.

How long has she been unconscious, she wondered. And how did she get here? She let her eyes wander around the room. It was a large room and quite lavishly furnished. Straight across from the foot of the bed was the window. To her left was a dresser with a mirror. Next to the dresser was a door. It was closed. To her right, against the wall was a large wardrobe. Next to the wardrobe was another door, also closed.

The bed itself was large and there was only one bed in the room. As she surveyed her surroundings a faint familiar smell caught her attention. With her mind still a little groggy, Cassie was unable to place her finger on it. As the scent carries no hint of danger or threat, she decided to let it slide for now. As she tried to stretch, Cassie felt the silky sheets on her skin. That was when she realized that she was actually naked. The thought jolted her to a sitting position. As the sheets slipped off her smooth skin, she quickly gathered it around her bosom and held it close.

"What the hell happened here?" she thought, a little panicky. She ran one hand over her head and felt her long hair loose against her bare shoulders and back. Someone had undressed her. With her anxiety mounting, she took a quick look under the sheets. There was no injuries. No sign of any attack. Her eyes raced across the room, searching but her clothes were nowhere in sight. As Cassie was trying to make sense of her surrounding and condition, the door next to the dresser opened.

A woman with pale skin in black, tight figure hugging undergarments walked into the room. She had a towel around her neck and her shoulder length black hair was wet. Just as Cassie was about to ask who the hell she was, the woman saw her sitting up and said, "Oh, so you're finally up. I was wondering how long you'll be out." She then casually sat herself on the dresser and proceeded to dry her hair with the towel.

Cassie blinked and stared at this woman silently. Somehow her voice was familiar. She was slender, athletically built and curvaceous. It took a while but finally Cassie's mind started to register the voice and the smell.

"Ginny?" she ventured hesistantly.

The woman turned to look at her with a puzzled look. "What?" she replied. "You don't recognize me? And to think I had to drag you all the way here from where you passed out," she continued on with an annoyed tone of voice.

Cassie blinked some more. "Well, to be honest you looked kinda different without your armor," Cassie admitted. "Uhmmm... I am naked..." Cassie said slowly.

"Your clothes are in the wardrobe," Ginny replied nonchalantly, still drying her hair. "You're quite heavy for your size you know. I nearly gave up and just let you drown in the tub."

"You mean you bathed me?!" Cassie asked shocked. "While I was out cold?!"

"No. I just let the men in the tavern have their fun with you," Ginny replied in jest. When she heard no reply coming back, she turned to face Cassie and found her sitting there with her mouth hanging open staring blankly back at her. "Oh, for heavens sake! Of course I bathed you! Couldn't let you on the same bed with me with all those awful smells on you, now could I?"

Cassie's mouth dropped open wider. Ginny didn't think it was possible. Cassie turned to the empty space beside her on the bed and then back to Ginny. The look of shock still on her face.

"You mean we slept together?!" Cassie asked incredulously.

"Well, there's only one bed," Ginny replied and headed over to the wardrobe to get dressed. "Get over it. It's not like you were a good bedfellow anyway. You were out cold for 2 days straight!"

"You... me.." Cassie stammered, her face all red from blushing and embarassment.

Ginny sighed. She grabbed Cassie's robe from the wardrobe and threw in onto the bed. She finshed dressing and walked towards the other door. Just as she was was about to open it she turned to Cassie and said slowly, "Nothing happened, ok?"

With that she opened the door, walked out and closed it behind her.

"So this is Kehjistan," Cassie remarked as they rode into the greening landscape. She could see trees in the distance and forests even further on the horizon. It was a marked change from the deserts around Caldeum. The sands had slowly changed to a savannah and now they are riding into what can be called a steppe as they leave Caldeum further and further behind. It had been almost a week since they had left the tavern in Caldeum.

"Yes," Ginny replied. "The rainforests of Kehjistan are a real change from Caldeum. You've never been here?"

"No. Or rather I should say that I have no memories of it," Cassie remarked. "My mother was from Kurast but she left Kehjistan soon after my birth. She travelled north and we finally settled in with the mages of Xiansai. That's where I learned the arcane arts. She rarely talks about her past. She always had this sad look on her face when asked about her past or when someone mentioned Kurast. She never really told me what happened. Even when she was at her deathbed she would not reveal what actually happened there in Kurast."

"Oh? Sorry to hear about that," Ginny said as they rode slowly through the greenery.

"She gave me part of a broken gemstone," Cassie said and reached inside her pouch to fish out the artifact in question. It was a simple locket with a gem set into it. The stone had broken and almost half of it was gone. "She said that should the gem glow, it would mean that the other half is nearby and that I should kill whoever possesses the other half."

"Why is that?" Ginny asked intrigued.

"She said that whoever has the other half would be my father's murderer," Cassie said.

"Really?" Ginny remarked.

"I dunno. Mom was the only family I had. I have never seen it glow anyway," Cassie said.

The two women had grown close ever since they have escaped the cave of the necromancer. Cassie is becoming very fond of Ginny. She had decided to tag along when Ginny got word from her council to head to Kurast for a mission. Ginny had been reluctant initially but she relented when Cassie followed her anyway. Cassie's excuse was that she had to repay Ginny for saving her from the necromancer.

"Enough about me," Cassie said. "What about you? What about this Radvorris character that we are supposed to meet?"

"He is my mentor," Ginny said. "I learnt all I know from him. He taught me how to be a demon hunter."

"Is it true that all demon hunters have a tragic past?" Cassie asked.

"Yes. We are taught to harness the hatred we feel inside and channel it as energy when we fight," Ginny said. "I am from Kehjistan too. From a village on the outskirts of Kurast. That village was destroyed by demons. They took everything away. My family. My home. If it wasn't for Radvorris, I'd perished along with the others."

"It must be hard," Cassie said.

"It is what fuels me. It is what gives me the strength to fight but sometimes I wished that I'd perished like all the others."

After that statement, the pair travelled in silence. They rode on until dusk fell. It was nearly time to stop for the night when they saw a small village on the horizon.

"We should head there and stop for the night," Cassie suggested and turned her horse towards the village. Ginny merely followed. As they closed in they felt that something was amiss. Suddenly Ginny stopped her horse. She sat up. Alert. Cassie quickly halted her horse.

"What's wrong?" Cassie asked.

"Blood. There's a smell of blood in the air," Ginny replied tersely.

Added on August 9, 2012, 1:46 pmAfter a brief moment of indecision, Cassie saw Ginny's horse dart part. As if on cue, she followed suit. They reached the edge of the village and dismounted. Ginny had already drawn her crossbow as she walked cautiously into the village. It was quiet. There were no sounds coming from the village. No footsteps on worn paths. No chattering of the people. No banging of tools from any workshops. Just deathly silence.

Cassie readied her magical source. Ginny was right. The air had a thick stench of blood. Just as they rounded the buildings that line the outer perimeter of the village they saw the source of the stench. There was blood everywhere. On the ground. On the walls and everywhere that it could get. On railings and rooftops. Cassie had to pull her scarf up to cover her mouth and nose. She had to work hard to quell the nausea that was threatening to erupt from her stomach. Corpses and body parts were everywhere. Broken and maimed. It looked like the whole village got slaughtered. Nothing was spared. Not even the dogs nor the chickens that were kept were spared. The village's central square seemed to be the core of the slaughter. The whole area was drenched in blood. Cassie could not make herself to move any closer.

"It's the same!" Ginny's voice suddenly broke through the eerie silence.

"What do you mean?" Cassie asked.

"This is the same thing that happened to my village all those years ago!" she muttered through clenched teeth. Cassie could see the anger and hatred boiling over inside Ginny. She quickly surveyed the area and then headed to a wall that had some insignia scrawled upon it in blood. She stood there for a moment staring at the insignia and then she raised her left hand and looked briefly at her palm. She then clenched her hand into a fist and moved away. In that brief moment, Cassie could see that Ginny had a scar on her left palm that matched the insignia on the wall.

Ginny moved quickly through the village. She was furiously searching for something. A trail. A trail that led out of the village. A trail presumably left by those who were responsible for the massacre.

"The trail is still fresh!" Ginny announced. "Not more than a couple of hours old! They could not have gotten far!" With that Ginny raced back to her horse, mounted and gave pursuit, leaving Cassie still standing in the village.

"Hey!" Cassie yelled out in confusion. "Wait for me..." but it was already too late. Ginny had disappeared into the trees of the forest just outside the doomed village.

With a resigned sigh, Cassie made her way back to her horse. The sun had already set. As she neared her mount, the horse neighed nervously and trotted restlessly to and fro, tugging at her reins that was tied to a post. Cassie halted and raised her alertness level. She could hear a menacing chatter coming from all around her. She channeled her energy into her magical source and it began to glow. The light from it reflected off more than a dozen pair of eyes that now surrounded her.

"Scavengers!" Cassie recognized the infernal creatures that are now closing in, attracted by the blood. Then without warning, some of the creatures lurched forward and leapt at her, razor sharp claws extended and ready to tear into her face.

Cassie ducked, narrowly missing the nearest scavenger as it clawed at the empty space where her head been just a split second ago. Finishing her chant, Cassie released a nova frost blast that instantly froze the attacking scavengers in mid air. Immediately following that blast, Cassie unleashed a force wave that shattered the frozen beasts into tiny bits.

The retaliatory strike from Cassie paused the scavengers' attack long enough for her to mount her horse. Now after re-grouping, the scavengers formed a line in front of her horse, hissing menacingly. Cassie took out her wand and pointed it at the ground right in front of the group. An arc of blue energy snaked from the wand, hitting the dirt and scattered across the ground, electrocuting any beasts caught in its path. All the scavengers caught by the electric bolt were instantly fried to crisp. Those that were lucky enough to escape quickly burrowed underground. Cassie raced her horse through the opening she had created and bolted after Ginny. She holstered her wand and did not bother to look back. She knew that the scavengers will not be pursuing when they could easily feast on the corpses that lay about.

Ginny raced through the forest as fast as her horse could carry her. Even as night fell, she could still follow the trail with ease. Soon the trees thinned out and she came to a clearing. A few kilometers in front of her was a crumbling tower. That was her destination. As Ginny was about to push her horse harder, she saw a figure on the ground. It was another demon hunter and he was not moving. Ginny halted and got off. She ran towards the figure lying face down on the ground.

As she neared, she could see that this demon hunter was hurt bad. He was bleeding and the blood had already pooled around his body. She knelt beside him and gently turned him over.

"Duerre!" she gasped in recognition at the face. "Who did this to you?"

Blood was coming out from Duerre's mouth. His breathing was shallow but he managed to open his eyes a little when he heard Ginny calling out his name.

"...Cult..." Duerre gasped weakly, choking on his own blood. "..danger....Ra...Radvorris...," he continued as his life slipped away, every word bringing him closer to the eternal darkness.

"You mean Radvorris is in there?" Ginny asked. "Then I'm going in to aid him!"

Duerre's eyes opened wide at Ginny's remarks and he started to shake his head. With the last of his strength he grabbed Ginny's hand and opened his mouth again to speak. The warning never came. Duerre passed before he could utter anything. Ginny slid her hand over Duerre's face to close his eyes.

"Rest my friend," she said. "You will be avenged. I swear it!" She then lay Duerre gently back on the ground. She mounted her horse again and continued towards the ominous tower in the distance.

Story continues... sorry for the lack of action so far... trying to establish some back stories.. haha.. please bear with me...

***********

After what seemed like an eternity Cassie finally broke through the forest and into the clearing. Almost immediately Cassie could feel the presence of some dark magic around the place. The source seemed to be coming from the tower ruins in the distance. Cassie was sure that's where Ginny would be. She prodded her horse towards the tower. About halfway there she came across Duerre's remains. Her concern for Ginny's safety went up a notch. It's no small feat to fight on an even footing with a demon hunter, much less be able to kill one. Cassie prodded her horse to make it go faster.

When she finally came up to the tower, she could see Ginny's horse tied to a tree nearby. She quickly did the same and rushed to the entrance of the ruined tower. The broken sign near the door said, 'Tower of Light'.

Cassie moved quickly but cautiously inside. It was still and dark. She could not hear anything. Cassie took her pouch and opened it to take out her magical source. When she opened the pouch she was startled to see a faint light coming from inside the pouch. Looking into the pouch, Cassie saw that the gem on the locket her mother gave her was glowing faintly.

"Damn! Why does this has to glow now of all times?" Cassie thought. Is what her mother told her true? Will she really find her father's murderer? Or what? Cassie shook her head and pushed the thoughts away. Now is not the time to worry about the past. She forced herself to focus on finding Ginny. She pushed the locket back into the pouch and fished out her magical source.

Presently she came to the basement of the tower. In the basement, there was a huge ornate door, now broken and decrepit, with stairs leading further undergound. As Cassie moved towards the start of the steps, she could feel the dark magic's presence getting stronger.

"If I trace this magic to its source, I'm sure I will find Ginny there!" Cassie thought. With that resolve, she headed down the stairs into the dark. As Cassie made her way down she realized that the underground structure is vast. She had already passed corridors after corridors, halls after halls and still the structure streched ever onwards and downwards. If it weren't for her zooming in onto the source of the dark magic that she felt, she would have easily gotten lost inside the labyrinthine structure.

Preferring to remain stealthy, Cassie avoided any unnecessary conflicts but she has yet to meet anyone else, neither friend nor foe. She could feel the source of the dark magic getting nearer. As she made her way down yet another flight of stairs, she finally saw signs of another person. Inside a room a short distance in front of her, Cassie saw a faint light coming from inside. Remaining hidden she cautiously approached and peeked inside. The light was coming from another room inside the one she was peering into. Seeing no one around she sneaked in and found a place to hide while observing the area.

Cassie could see someone inside the other room. As her eyes adjusted, she saw that it was a man. He was dressed in a demon hunter's armor. Cassie wondered if he was a friend of the dead demon hunter she encountered before entering the tower. Deciding that this man probably had some connection with the dead demon hunter, Cassie moved to put away her magical source as not to appear threatening. Just as she opened her pouch a bright light burst through from inside. This caught the attention of the demon hunter inside the other room. He whipped out a longbow and aimed it straight where Cassie was hiding.

"Who's there?" the man asked cautiously, arrow prepped for release.

Wincing, Cassie had no choice but to reveal herself. Holding both her hands up in the air, she slowly stepped out so that the demon hunter could see her.

"I'm sorry for intruding but I saw your dead friend out there and I thought someone in here might be having some trouble," Cassie said just loud enough to be heard.

The other demon hunter approached and Cassie could see that he was an older man, probably in his fifties. He lowered his bow but kept alert.

"Was there anyone else with you?" he asked.

Cassie was puzzled by the question. It meant that he probably had not run into Ginny yet. She decided to play it safe. "No," Cassie replied. "I came in here alone."

"That light just now," the demon hunter said. "Where did it come from?"

"It's from a gem that I had," Cassie said, getting even more puzzled.

The demon hunter than shouldered his bow and reached inside a bag he had. Taking something out, he held out his hand and sowly opened his palm. To Cassie's astonishment, a light came through and it was coming from a gem he held. It was glowing brightly.

"Mind if I see your glowing gem?" he asked.

Cassie was taken aback. The demon hunter was holding the broken other part of her locket's gem. She stood there frozen.

"Please," the demon hunter said again. "Could you show me your glowing gem?"

Recovering from her shock, Cassie fumbled for her pouch, pulled out the locket and held it out. It was glowing just as brightly.

"It's a exact match!" the demon hunter exclaimed. "How did you get hold of Brianna's locket?" he asked, his eyes searching for an answer in desperation.

Cassie was even more stunned. "How.. how did you know my mother's name?"

"Your mother?" the demon hunter said, just as surprised. "Brianna's your mother? Where is she now?"

"She's been dead for over a decade! What's it to you?" Cassie asked, unsure of how else to re-act.

"Dead? So she's not forgiven me," the demon hunter said hanging his head, looking defeated. "That's why she left so abruptly. She left eventhough she was pregnant with our child."

Cassie's shock led her to drop the locket and back away until she hit the wall. "No.. no.. it can't be..." she muttered, her eyes aimlessly searching the floor. She then looked up to find the demon hunter looking at her with just as much confusion. Could this man really be her father?

We are reaching the climax of the story... would appreciate some comments. Thanks! biggrin.gif

*****************

The last half hour was a complete blur for Cassie. She could not make head or tail of what has been happening. She was now absent mindedly examining the locket. The two broken pieces has been put back together. They fit perfectly. Apart from the line where the crack was, the gem now filled the locket. It was strange that now that they are fitted side by side, the gem no longer glowed. Millions of questions were running through Cassie's mind. Was she dreaming? Could this really be happening? Here she was having come face to face with a man that most likely is her father but why was it that her mother told her a different story?

She was now alone in the room. The demon hunter had told her to stay there and wait for him. He had some unfinished business to attend to and that she would be safe in that room. Cassie let out a sigh. She did not know what to think. Then it occured to her that in the confusion of the moment, she had completely forgotten to ask him what his name was. Cassie mentally chastised herself for her stupidity and then got up. She would go look for him and then ask him his name. She should at least know his name.

Wandering out from the room Cassie came face to face with the huge underground complex. She had forgotten how big this place was. Since loitering in the room will do nothing but put more questions to which she will not have any answers into her mind, Cassie decided to look for the demon hunter nonetheless.

Presently she came to a large multi-story chamber. It was dimly lit by a few torches on the lowest floor. She was on the second floor. While searching for a way to descend, Cassie suddenly caught sight of the demon hunter below. Just as she was about to call out to him, another figure appeared. This second figure was dressed like a cultist. Immediately Cassie knew that this person was bad news. Before she could sound a warning, the cultist spoke.

"High Priest," the cultist called out. Cassie quickly stood back into the shadows to conceal herself.

The demon hunter turned to the cultist and said, "What is it?"

Cassie's eyes widened in shock. High priest? What priest? What exactly was the connection between the two men?

"We have located her," the cultist said.

"When?" the demon hunter asked.

"About a half hour ago. We are leading her here. Everything is prepared," the cultist finished his report.

"Good. Go to the ceremony chambers and start the ritual now. I will be coming shortly and we shall make history tonight," the demon hunter said.

Cassie could not believe what she was hearing. Her head spinned all the more. What is the meaning of all this? She decided that it was best that she remain hidden and find out as much as possible as to what is happening. As she trailed the demon hunter she was once again aware of the presence of the dark magic she had felt earlier. Only now, it was much stronger than before. The demon hunter made his way into a side room. Cassie found her way down and quietly slipped into the same room.

The demon hunter had his back towards Cassie. He was busy with some kind of box. As he opened it, he took out something from it. The moment Cassie laid her eyes upon the object, she knew she could not stay hidden anymore. Quick as she could, Cassie fired an arcane bolt towards the demon hunter. The older man was caught by surprise but years and years of experience made him re-act in an instant. He vaulted quickly to one side. The arcane bolt missed its target but it made him drop the object he was holding.

Cassie dashed forward and picked the crystal up from the floor. She kept a wary eye on the demon hunter who had by now armed himself. Cassie kept a hand pointed towards the older man, her palm crackling with electricity.

"What the hell are you doing with a soulstone?" Cassie asked, her voice stern.

"Cassie?" the demon hunter asked. "Why are you here? I told you to stay in the room."

"Don't change the subject!" Cassie raised her voice. "What are you doing with a soulstone?" she demanded again.

"Why, I'm going to destroy it, of course!" he replied.

"Enough with the lies! I saw you with that cultist. What's your connection to the cult?" Cassie demanded, threatening to unleash the electric bolt at him.

"Cassie, you don't understand," the demon hunter pleaded. "It's not what you are thinking. Yes. It's a soulstone and it's Mephisto's soulstone if you must know. But I'm not here to free him. I'm here to tap into his powers so that we can defeat the lords of hell using their own powers! It's what I have been telling Brianna all along. Now I have finally found a way to do it!"

"You're out of your mind!" Cassie almost screamed. She could not believe what she was hearing. She understood now why her mother had said what she said. So it's confirmed now that this man in front of her is her father but he is lost. Lost to his own delusions. That explained her mother's sadness and her mother was right, she has to put an end to it. Before she could do anything an unexpected person came into the room.

"Cassie? Radvorris?" Ginny asked surprised by the scene in front of her. "What's going on?"

"Ginny!" Radvorris quickly called out. "Quick! Disable her! The soulstone has clouded her mind!"

Ginny eyes widened when she saw the soulstone in Cassie's hand. She brought her crossbow to bear.

"No! It's not me that's corrupted! It's him!" Cassie rebutted. That statement caused Ginny to pause.

"Don't listen to her!" Radvorris exclaimed. "It's Mephisto talking! Shoot!"

"Ginny, no! After all that we've gone through, do you not trust me?" Cassie said.

Ginny's finger tightened on the trigger but she's still unsure if she should pull. Seeing that her friend is torn, Cassie decided to act. She unleashed the electric bolt at Radvorris. Re-acting on reflex, Ginny fired. A bola shot rocketed towards Cassie and wrapped itself around her legs. Radvorris vaulted and dodged his electrocution. The bola shot exploded and Cassie crashed to the floor and became still.

Ginny quickly rushed to Cassie's side and checked her. She released a breath of relief after finding out that Cassie was only knocked unconscious and was not seriously hurt. Ginny then retrieved the soulstone from the floor.

"So this is what the cultists were after," Ginny said.

"Yes," Radvorris replied as he stood beside Ginny. "Now that we have it, it's time to finish this mission."

"I know where they are," Ginny said. She pocketed the soulstone and started to leave the room.

Just as she was about to walk out the doorway, she felt a heavy blow to the back of her head. The room spun and her vision started to cloud. As she fell to the floor, she saw Radvorris holding a club in his hands. She remembered that Radvorris was behind her. Then all fell into darkness.

Once Ginny was knocked out, Radvorris called out for his cultist to come and take her away. "Prepare her for the ritual," he ordered and then changed into a cultist's robe.

The conclusion for the "No Light Without Darkness" story arc.

Hope you guys enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it!

Comments please... tell me what you guys think, ok?

*****************

Ginny's head throbbed. She struggled to clear her mind. She then found out that she was unable to move. Both her hands and legs were bound. Slowly she opened her eyes. A dim orange glow filled her sight. Then she heard chanting. A cold breeze swept through and she felt the wind on her skin. That was when she realized that she was without any clothes.

As she focussed, she could see that she was tied in an upright position onto a crucifix. A few steps in front of her was a large vat set into the floor. There was a thick liquid in the vat and the putrid smell emanating from it told Ginny that it was blood. Her bare feet was touching a cold surface. It was marble. From her feet, a small niche ran a line towards the large vat of blood. Surrounding the vat were dozens of cultists in a circle. All of them seemed to be in a trance and chanting. Ginny realized that she was bound on a sacrificial altar. Ginny struggled against her bonds. It was no use. She could not free herself.

"Don't struggle. You won't be able to free yourself," she heard Radvorris' voice from behind her. He then stepped in front of Ginny.

"You!" Ginny spat in disgust. "Of all the people, why does it have to be you! I trusted you! You are supposed to be vanquishing demons, not joining them!"

"Ginny dear, you've got it all wrong," Radvorris said calmly. "I'm not joining them. I'm merely using their powers against their own kind. I shall have the power of a lord of the burning hells and with that I can defeat any demons that dare show their face here!"

"How? By unleashing one? This is madness! Stop it now!" Ginny tried to reason. "You yourself have seen firsthand what happened to the dark wanderer. There's no way you can hope to contain the evil!"

"That's where you're wrong," Radvorris countered. "It's not by chance that I chose Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred. We demon hunters have dedicated our lives to controlling and using hatred to fight. We have fine tuned it down to an art. It's in our nature. Hatred fuels us. It's what makes us strong. Mephisto will only enhance my powers!"

"You are out of your mind!" Ginny yelled. "Even if you could control Mephisto it does not justify your massacre of a whole village!"

"To achieve great things, sacrifices are necessary," Radvorris replied. "The sacrifice of a few to save many. It's justified. Now, it's your turn to sacrifice for the good of the many," he continued and drew an ornate sacrificial dagger from his robes. "I've waited 20 years for this. Now the moment of my victory is at hand."

"Why? Why wait 20 years when you could have done the same back then? Why keep me alive when you've massacred all from my village?" Ginny asked, her heart pounding. She was near panic and there's little she could do bound up like this. She can only hope to stall him. Hopefully Cassie will wake in time to come to her aid. She regretted firing the shot at Cassie earlier. She should have trusted her. Ginny could only hope that she had not sealed her own fate.

"20 years ago, I did not succeed. I lacked one key ingredient," Radvorris said. "I was too naive then. I had spared you as I thought that you were too young back then. Little did I know that you are the key! You my dear, are the last of the Zakarum priests bloodline. It's your blood that will open the portal to the burning hells! To think that all this time I was searching for the key when it was right in front of me. The world works in such a mysterious way!"

Cassie shook her head to clear it. She pushed herself up from the floor. She was aching all over but she had to get to her feet. When she got up, she found that she was alone. Neither Ginny nor Radvorris was in sight. Then she felt it. The dark magic. It's presence was almost overwhelming. Cassie forced herself to move. She has to get to the source of it. There, she will find Ginny and Radvorris. She knew that Ginny was in grave danger and she had to get to her fast.

Racing through the complex, Cassie finally approached the source of the dark magic. In front of her, a light was coming from a chamber. She could hear the chanting inside. As she neared she could see the huge number of cultists gathered there. All of them are fixated at a small raised dias in the center of the chamber. There tied to a crucifix was Ginny. She was bare and standing in front of her was Radvorris, now in a cultist robe and a dagger in his hand. Cassie realized that Radvorris is about to perform a sacrifice and the sacrificial lamb was none other than Ginny. Cassie quickly recited a spell and activated it. Her skin began to crystalize and she morphed into a living crystal statue - the diamond skin spell. It would render her invulnerable for a very brief period of time. She hoped that in that time, she would be able to break through the ranks of cultist surrounding Ginny, reach her and somehow rescue her.

As she burst into the chamber, Cassie unleashed a barrage from her spectral blade spell. Blades made of arcane energy slashed out in front of Cassie. That attack dropped half a dozen cultists in front of her. It also alerted Radvorris to her presence. The cultists also re-acted, apart from the ones nearest to the dias, the rest of them broke from their chants and began to converge on Cassie drawing their weapons.

"Keep her at bay!" Radvorris ordered. "I need but a few seconds to complete this!" At the command, three of the cultists summoned forth the spirits of hell and transformed themselves into Dark Thralls and advanced on Cassie.

"Cassie!" Ginny called out. "Run! Get out of here! Tell the Demon Hunters that Radvorris had turned rogue! He's planning to unleash Mephisto!"

"I'm not leaving here without you!" Cassie yelled back unleashing barrage after barrage of her spectral blade attacks. It seemed that for every cultist that fell, three more would take his place. She was woefully outnumbered. What's worse the Dark Thralls are approaching fast. Cassie stretched her hands out in front of her. She knew that the diamond skin armor will not last long and she had to break through the waves of cultists fast. Cassie aimed her hands at the incoming thralls and unleashed an orange beam of energy that cuts through everything. The beam sliced through the bodies of the thralls and cultists alike. Anything caught in it simply disintegrated.

Just as Cassie managed to clear a path to the middle of the the chamber, Radvorris plunged the dagger into Ginny's chest.

"Kyaaaaa!!!!!!!" Ginny screamed in agony as the dagger dug deep into her chest and she became motionless.

"No!!" Cassie screamed, horrified that she was too late. The shock froze Cassie in her tracks and almost at once she was being held down by the cultists that swarmed around her.

Radvorris pulled the dagger out and blood began bleeding out of the wound. It trickled down Ginny's limp body to her legs and into the niche, following it to the vat. As it reached the vat, a small explosion was heard and a portal to the burning hells began to open up.

"Yes! It's working!" Radvorris exclaimed in ecstasy. He quickly recited a chant and tendrils of energy began streaming forth from the portal's opening and embedding themselves into Radvorris.

"Arrgghh!! Yes! I can feel the power!" Radvorris roared. "Yes! Yes!"

"No!" Cassie screamed again. Her diamond skin spell dissipated but Cassie recited another spell and arcane energy began coursing through her body. The energy burst forth and threw the cultists clear off her as she transformed into a being of pure energy - the archon. Cassie levitated off the ground and floated towards Radvorris who was absorbing all the hellish energy from the opened portal. As suddenly as the portal opened, it closed and Radvorris' source of energy was abruptly cut off.

"What?!" Radvorris yelled out in surprise. "The portal cannot be sustained?" He then cast an enraged look at Ginny's limp body. "The sacrificial blood is impure!" he yelled out anger. "No matter! I've got more than enough of Mephisto's power!" With that his eyes started to glow red. He began to transform. His hands turned into claws that are razor sharp and bony spikes began protruding from his spine.

Cassie closed the distance between her and Radvorris and fired a disintegration beam at him. Radvorris held out his palm to meet it. The beam hit but instead of disintegrating, Radvorris merely absorbed the beam.

"Hahahaha!" Radvorris laughed maniacally. "Do you think you can stop me with that?" He then slashed out at Cassie with his other hand. The claws ripped right through Cassie's archon energy and broke the spell. Cassie morphed back into flesh and blood and the claw ripped a gash at Cassie's waist. The blow caused Cassie to drop onto the floor at Ginny's feet. It also sapped most of Cassie's arcane energy. Radvorris' power was incredible. Not only was he able to withstand a disintegration beam, he could also hit and cause enough magical damage to break Cassie's archon spell. Cassie knew that she was absolutely no match for Radvorris.

Radvorris raised his claws for another strike at Cassie. He knew that she have no fight left in her. "Why? Why do you defy me?" Radvorris roared at Cassie, his voice filled with disappointment and hatred. "Like your mother, you too had no faith in me! I made all this sacrifice for the betterment of all mankind! All I ask in return was for a little love and understanding but she left me! And now, you too defy me! Die now!" Radvorris prepared to slash down onto Cassie in a killing blow. Just as he was about to strike a voice called out:

"Radvorris," a female voice came from behind Radvorris. "Come my love. Let's leave this place and live happily together."

Radvorris froze. He then turned slowly. There hovering over the vat of blood was a fiery apparition of a female figure. Moments before, as Cassie crashed onto the floor, the locket that was in the now ripped opened pouch fell out and scattered across the floor. It skittered and skip across the hard floor until it finally dropped into the vat of blood. A tongue of flame shot out from the vat, burning fiercely. After a few seconds the flames formed a female human figure. Both Cassie and Radvorris, caught up in the heat of battle, were not aware of this event. Now both Radvorris and Cassie stared incredulously at the fiery apparition.

"Brianna?" Radvorris asked. "Is that you?"

"Mom?" Cassie blurted.

"Yes, dearest Radvorris," the apparition continued. "It is I. Come with me and let us lead a happy life together."

"You.. you've finally forgiven me?" Radvorris asked as he stepped slowly nearer to the apparition.

"Yes. I forgive you. Now come to me," the apparition urged again. Radvorris stepped ever closer until he was standing just next to the fiery apparition. The apparition held its hands open and Radvorris walked right into it. As the fire engulfed Radvorris, another burst of flame sprouted from the vat and rose until it hit the ceiling. Then it disappeared, taking Radvorris with it.

Cassie had to force herself to act despite her confusion about what had actually taken place. She quickly checked on Ginny. She was hurt bad but she was still breathing. Looking at the still bleeding wound, Cassie knew if she did not get Ginny immediate medical aid, she will not make it. Cassie quickly untied Ginny and embraced her.

"Hang in there Ginny!" Cassie pleaded. "You can't just leave me like this! I won't allow you to die!" Cassie then summoned all of her remaining arcane energy and concentrated them into one teleport spell. Cassie will use up all of her arcane energy to attempt to teleport herself and Ginny to the last populated town that they had been through on the way here.

"I will save you or die trying!" Cassie said and started the teleport spell. Once she finished reciting the spell, both she and Ginny vanished from the chambers in a flash of light.

Cassie finally started to regain consciousness. She did not know how long it had been. She felt that she was drifting in an endless dark void and a dot of light appeared. She followed it and her eyes started to show a room. It was daylight again. Memories of the events in the tower flashed back and Cassie sat upright in a start. Her head started to spin and she felt dizzy and weak and collapsed back onto the bed.

"Whoa.. easy there," a strange voice came.

Cassie opened her eyes again and found herself looking into the face of a kindly old woman. She was smiling at her and tucking her back into bed. "Take it easy. You are hurt and should not be out of bed yet," she continued.

"Where's Ginny?" Cassie asked.

"You're referring to your friend I suppose," the old lady replied. Cassie just nodded.

"She was hurt pretty bad you know. The healer did all he could for her," the old lady continued and Cassie's heart sank at the comment. Tears started to well in her eyes. "Only time will tell if she will survive. She's still unconscious in the next room," the old lady finished.

Cassie let her tears flow and she cried. She felt relieved that Ginny was still alive and let her emotions flush out through her sobs and tears. She cried until she could not cry anymore.

Later in the day, Cassie went into Ginny's room. She laid there on the bed, her skin paler than Cassie had ever seen it. She looked fragile but her breathing was steady although shallow. Ginny was a fighter and Cassie knew that she will not give up easily. Cassie sat on the edge of her bed and took Ginny's hand into hers, cradling it gently.

"Thank God you're alive," Cassie said softly. "I wouldn't know what to do if you're gone."

A small tear formed at the corner of Ginny's eye, rolled down her cheek and onto the pillow unnoticed by Cassie.

overall id rate it around 6 to 7ish out of 10

its a good mark trust me, it aint LoTR lmao

making sense wise, id prefer it to be less formal, i mean most of us know how archon looks or sounds like, so basically i can skip the skill names xD other than that its all ok, small gripe about how the mother appeared and consumed her father thou, no explanation.

if only the battle AND fanservice scenes had more actions, it would had been awsm LOL

making sense wise, id prefer it to be less formal, i mean most of us know how archon looks or sounds like, so basically i can skip the skill names xD other than that its all ok, small gripe about how the mother appeared and consumed her father thou, no explanation.

if only the battle AND fanservice scenes had more actions, it would had been awsm LOL
*
LOL! I know lah it's not LoTR.... if it was anywhere even remotely near that level of standard I would be charging you guys for reading it! biggrin.gif

Thanks for the review. At least I know someone thinks it's ok. Haha. If not I just syoik sendiri..

As for the terms and all, well I'm catering for those who have little exposure to D3.. and as for the mother appearing.. it's call an 'applied phlebotinum' meaning I just pull something out of thin air and put that in. It's fiction so anything can happen.. LOL blush.gif

More battle description and fanservice? ... OK.. Noted!

I have to chip in. I am a big fan of LotR...Tolkien is just mind blowing....a real fantasy world ....EPIC.

Your is pretty good. I sense your write similarly with D.Eddings style..just minus the dry humour. Would be better if you had add a bit of dry humour into it..smile.gif.

Othwise, I second Bee...A+ for effort...B for the stroyline. but A+++ for making it free to view.. rclxms.gif

Thank you!

Strangely enough I have never, ever read D.Eddings before even though I know that name. Haha. I think my style of writing have changed over time. Now it's all brief and skeletal like. Not much details - this is a drawback that I myself have noticed. Last time I'm really long-winded.. and I can bore myself with my writings.. hahahaha...

Thanks again for the review... I will try to come up with another arc... if I can string a plot-line together that is.. any ideas or suggestions on the plot?

BTW, I have an idea for a crossover story. What do you guys think about a crossover with Witchblade? Let me know, ok?

Meanwhile, I'm going to put in a short segment just for fanservice's sake.

Ginny quickly waded into the water of the hot spring. She headed straight towards her favorite spot, a rocky part of the small pool where she could sit on the smooth rocks under the water and immerse herself up to her neck while resting her back on the rocks that form the bank. Once seated there, one would find oneself in a semi-reclining position and enjoy the heated water that flows calmly around you.

She rested her head on the rocks and looked up towards the sky. It was blue and clear with a few clouds dotting it. Beautiful. Just a perfect day for a dip and to relax in the hot pool. The spring emerged in front of a rock face that covers about 3 sides of the pool and towers up about 50 feet with trees lining the whole area. It was quite secluded and Ginny suspected that apart from her and Cassie, no one from the nearby town Bronvale knows about it. No one has ever mentioned the hot spring and it was not suprising as the water from the pool disappeared underground again just a short distance from where Ginny was sitting. You would also have to venture quite some distance into a rainforest to get to it.

As Ginny sat there relaxing, she found herself absent mindedly running her left index finger up and down a scar in between her breasts. The scar caused by Radvorris trying to sacrifice her to unleash Mephisto close to 5 months back. Ginny sighed. She was still not back to her full strength yet. She estimated that she has regained around 85% of her strength from before.

Torrhan, the healer in Bronvale had told her that she was extremely lucky. That stab would have killed any other person immediately. Ginny would have perished too had not it been for the fact that Ginny's heart was located slightly more off center than most people. This caused the blade to completely miss her heart. It was also another stroke of miracle that the blade missed all of Ginny's vital arteries surrounding her heart as well as her lungs. Nevertheless, Ginny had lost a lot of blood. She had nearly bled to death. Had it not been Cassie who used up all of her strength to teleport them, Ginny would never have made it.

Since she had regained consciousness, she had been recuperating in Bronvale. Cassie had been at her side all this time too, fussing about her. Ginny smiled at the thought. Cassie has been like a nagging mother while she recovered. She complained when Ginny did finish her vegetables and complained when she got out of bed to stretch saying that she should not be moving about. It had annoyed her at the time but looking back, she was glad Cassie was there. With Cassie around, Ginny felt safe. She felt that she could be off her guard and just concentrated on getting better.

It had only been about 2 months since Ginny was well enough to come out and start to physically re-train her body. It was around that time too that they had found this hot spring during one of their hikes in the forest. After that, they have frequented the place quite a lot. Sometimes together and sometimes alone. It was also due to this fact that Ginny now sported a light tan. Her pale skin now had a slight bronzed look to it. It also reminded Ginny that she had yet to replace her armor lost in that infernal tower. She remembered when she had to borrow one of Cassie's robe to go out and buy herself some clothes. The robes barely fit Ginny. Cassie had remarked that Ginny's breasts looked like they were about to burst out at any time in her robes and wondered aloud how a demon hunter can be so well endowed when they are supposed to be running around chasing after demons. It was only at that time that Ginny realized that her bosom were much larger than Cassie's. She also noticed that although Cassie was less well endowed, she was curvaceous and petite. Ginny was especially jealous of Cassie's long, slim legs that looked marvelous.

Ginny's reminiscing was interrupted by the appearance of those very legs she was thinking about. She watched as the pair of legs disappeared into the hot water beside her.

"Not doing any training today, huh?" Cassie remarked as she slowly sat down in the water just next to Ginny. "Ooohh... these waters are just perfect!" she continued.

"Nah," Ginny replied nonchalantly. "I was thinking to just take the day off."

"If you keep taking days off, you'll never regain your fitness," Cassie remarked.

"Blame it on this hot spring then," Ginny replied. "I've never found any other that's as comfortable and as relaxing as this one."

"Why don't you just admit that you're lazy?" Cassie teased.

"Speak for yourself! You're getting flabby too!" Ginny retorted and grabbed at Cassie's waist and pinched playfully. While her hands were there, Ginny felt the scar on the left side of Cassie's waist, courtesy of Radvorris too.

"I am not!" Cassie denied and quickly pushed Ginny's hands away. She then scooped up some water and threw it at Ginny's face.

"Hey! No fair!" Ginny protested and started to splash water back at Cassie and the two women started to play in the water like 2 carefree children.

Ok... I'm going to start off another arc with our favorite DH and wizzie. This time they will have a special guest star...

I'm going to take this one slower as it's story arc is longer and a little more complex. Please be patient if you don't see me updating as often, ok? biggrin.gif

Here's the opening to the arc entitled "Maintaining The Balance"

Enjoy!

*************

Maintaining The Balance

Ginny tried on her new hood. It fit nicely. She had finally come around to completing her task of re-acquiring her armor that she lost in the ruined Tower of Light previously.

"I'm not sure about this," Ginny said after checking herself out in the mirror.

"Oh, don't be silly. It looks great on you!" Cassie chirped enthusiastically.

Ginny took another look at her reflection in the mirror. It was quite a change. Her hood is now white. Her chest piece is a dull silver. Her pants are grey as are her boots but her bracers and shoulder pieces have shiny golden or silver highlights. It's quite a contrast to her old armor that is mainly black or dark grey.

"I dunno," Ginny fretted still. "How am I supposed to hide with all these shiny things on me?" she reasoned.

"Will you just stop fretting?" Cassie said. "We've already proved that your shadow abilities will hide you no matter what colour your clothes are, remember?" she countered cheerfully.

Ginny gave up with a sigh. Cassie was right. They did prove that no matter what colours she was wearing, Ginny's shadow abilities will conceal her. Cassie's cheeky and carefree attitude was really rubbing off on her. She noticed that Cassie's robes were always colourful. It's either bright yellow or orange or a light shade of green and often times she would have multiple colours on her clothes.

"Now," Cassie said. "How do they feel?"

"Feels about right," Ginny replied. "They are lighter than my old set but I guess that's a good thing."

"Then it's settled!" Cassie chirped. "We'll buy this set!" Before Ginny could protest, she was already handing over the gold to the blacksmith.

They walked out of the blacksmith's and into the normal hustle and bustle of Bronvale's daily activities. The baker is trying to sell his freshly baked loaves. The farmers peddling their produce and the people milling about doing their daily tasks. Bronvale was a small town but it had all the necessities. A blacksmith, a weapon maker, 3 taverns and a healer cum apothecarist.

"No news yet on your next mission?" Cassie asked as they made their way back to the tavern where they are currently lodged.

"No," Ginny replied. "It has been strangely quiet," she remarked. "Not much demonic activities anywhere in fact."

"And that's not a good thing?" Cassie asked picking up on Ginny's unease.

"I'm not sure," Ginny said. "Usually when this kind of calmness is witnessed, there will be hell to pay later on."

Meanwhile in New York City on Earth...

Detective Sara Pezzini unlocked her door to her apartment and went inside. She locked the door behind her and put her grocery bags on the table. Sara pushed a stray strand of her long brown hair behind her ears to tuck it away and then turned her attention to the baby sitter.

"Hello Mrs. Gomez," Sara said apolegetically to the middle aged Hispanic woman. "I'm sorry I was late but work is hell!"

Mrs. Gomez just stood there indifferently. Sara quickly reached into her wallet and pulled out a bunch of notes. She made sure she included another twenty dollars in there to compensate for her being late.

"Here you go and sorry for making you wait," Sara said handing over the money. "How's Hope tonight?"

"She's sleeping in the room," Mrs. Gomez replied, putting on her coat to leave.

Sara watched Mrs. Gomez leave and close the door behind her. She then quietly opened the door to Hope's room and went in. She went to the baby's cot and peered in. Hope was sleeping peacefully and nicely tucked in. Mrs. Gomez may not like to talk much but she always made sure that Hope was warm and comfortable.

Sara smiled at her sleeping 6 months old daughter and then went to take a shower. She took off her clothes and piled them into her laundry basket. She made sure she put away her badge and gun before stepping inside the shower. Despite having given birth just half a year earlier, Sara was still very much in shape. She could put a lot of younger women to shame with her curves. She let the hot water just run over for a while before proceeding to shower proper. Despite being naked, Sara's right wrist had an ornate bracelet. It looked just like a normal piece of jewellery with a red and blue gem set into it but this bracelet is not jewellery. It was in fact the Witchblade. A weapon of great power and the offspring of the primal forces of Darkness and Light. Sara Pezzini is the current wielder.

After her shower, Sara put on an old T-shirt, shorts, dried her hair and went straight to bed. She had not been sleeping long when she was suddenly awakened. The Witchblade was re-acting. The bracelet had now turned into an organic-metallic gauntlet with claws that covered up to her right elbow. Sara felt uneasy. She jumped out of bed and opened the door to her living room. To her horror, Sara saw light spilling from the crack between the floor and Hope's room door. She raced to Hope's room and violently threw the door open. Inside was an open portal that was closing and Hope was nowhere to be seen. Without hesistating Sara threw herself into the closing portal. The room was plunged back into darkness as the portal closed, leaving the apartment empty.

At about the same time, the Archangel of Fate Itherael jolted. He felt a great disturbance in the streams of Fate in Sanctuary. He had not felt this way before. Not even when Diablo last rampaged through the town of old Tristram had the disturbance been so great. Itherael quickly used his powers to peer into the streams of Fate to find out what had gone wrong.

Awkward? Well, that's what I hope to avoid, Bee. Haha. We shall see if thing turn awkward or not...

On with the story....

****************************

As Sara jumped through the portal, it closed behind her. She rolled to break her fall and then realized that she was now in some country side. There were trees and grass and a dirt road not far from where she was. The strangest thing was that it was now daytime when she clearly remembered that it was in the middle of the night when she burst into Hope's room.

Sara frantically searched the area around her. She could not see anyone around. Frantic she followed the dirt road. Not far from where she landed, Sara saw a small house by the roadside. Seated on an old wooden chair just outside the door was an old lady. She was dressed in some medieval garbs. Although this seemed strange to Sara, she went up to the lady.

"Excuse me but did you see anyone carrying a baby coming through here?" Sara asked the old lady.

The lady gave her a look over and said, "Eh? What's that?" while turning her head sideways so that one of her ears was pointed more towards Sara.

"I said did you see anyone carrying a baby coming through here?" Sara repeated a little louder and getting impatient.

"Baby? Why yes," the old lady replied to Sara's relief. "Someone went by here just a moment ago with a crying baby." She then pointed up the road. "Went that way. Probably to the old church at the end of the road."

"Thank you!" Sara said hastily and ran off in the direction pointed out.

As soon as Sara was out of sight, the old lady transformed into a succubus, gave a sinister laugh and flew off. Sara ran with all her might and soon saw the church coming into sight. The two story building was old and crumbling but looks to be still in use. She ran to the doors and went inside. Once she was in, she heard the sound of a baby crying.

"Hope!" she cried out. The crying was coming from the upper floor. "Hang on! Mamma's coming!" she said and rushed up the stairs. As Sara came to the landing of the second floor, she saw Hope in a room at the far end. What was even more surprising was that it looked like an angel was carrying her.

"An Angelus warrior?" Sara thought puzzled but this angel looked way different than the Angelus warriors that Sara was used to encountering. Though the angel was wearing armor, the armor looked more like a medieval's knight's armor rather than the organic-metallic armor similar to that of the Witchblade. Another difference was that this angel sported wings that looked like tendrils of energy instead of feathers and it had a hood on his head and Sara could not make out any face inside the hood. A spiked metal halo was floating on top of this angel's head.

"Release the baby and give her back to me!" Sara demanded as she ran towards the room. The angel turned to face Sara on hearing her desperate plea. He laughed and promptly vanished in a trail of light shooting upwards and out of the open window taking Hope with him.

"No!" Sara cried, tears streaming down her face as she rushed into the now empty room. She sank to her knees and could no longer contain her sobs. After crying for a few minutes, Sara heard a voice calling out to her.

"Are you alright?" a child's voice asked.

Sara turned to face the voice to find a boy of around 12 standing in the doorway. She still could stop her tears.

"Are you looking for the Archangel Imperius?" the child asked again moving to the edge of the doorframe and hiding himself partly behind it.

"Imperius?" Sara asked. "Was that angel called Imperius?"

"Yes..," the child answered hesistantly.

"Do you know where he went?" Sara asked trying not to get her hopes up.

"To the High Heavens.. where all the archangels stay," the child answered.

Sara's heart sank at the comment. "And do you know where that is?" she asked desperately.

"No..." came the reply. Sara sank her face into her hands. "But the priest knows," the child continued and Sara quickly lifted her face again to see the child. "He will be here tomorrow. Maybe you can ask him then," the child said. "You can stay here until he comes, if you like."

"Thank you boy," Sara said with tear drops still dropping from her eyes only that it was now tears of hope instead of despair.

"I'm going home now," the child said. Sara merely nodded as the child walked away. For now Sara could do nothing but wait. Sara did not see that the child, like the old lady, transformed once he was out of sight. The child transformed into Belial, the Lord of Lies and disappeared into a dark cloud with an evil smirk on his lips.

Meanwhile in Bronvale...

"Just as I thought," Ginny said as she finished reading the message from the demon hunter's council.

"What's the matter?" Cassie asked.

"There's trouble," Ginny replied. "A large number of demons have been sighted coming out from the crater of Mount Arreat. It looks like they are mobilizing an army!"

"What?! An army? Are you serious?" Cassie asked incredulously.

"We are moving out to Bastion Keep to join the other members of my order tomorrow," Ginny said tersely. "Start packing."

Just as they started to pack, a vision appeared before them.

"Itherael?" Cassie gasped as she recognized the apparition floating in front of them. "What are you doing here?"

"Demon hunter," Itherael spoke. "Go forth to the ruins of the ancient city of Viz-jun. I need you scout that area out for me."

"Viz-jun? But the demons are at Mt. Arreat," Ginny protested.

"I know. I have dispatched the Archangel Tyrael there to assist your brethren. I sense a great disturbance in the streams of Fate and I have yet to determine the cause of it. It seems that the fate of Sanctuary is unravelling and I sense an object of immense and strange power in Viz-jun. I need you there to help me find it. It may be the key to solving this mystery. The very existance of Sanctuary may depend on it," Itherael explained.

"Why me?" Ginny asked.

"Because you and your friend are the nearest to Viz-jun," Itherael said.

"Fine," Ginny said.

"I shall contact you again when you have reached Viz-jun," Itherael said and the apparition disappeared.

"Are we really going to Viz-jun?" Cassie asked, not entirely sure what to make of the strange event she had just witnessed.

"Yes," Ginny replied as she went back to packing her stuff. "It's not everyday that one gets a mission directly from an archangel."

"I'm not so sure if that is a good thing," Cassie said.

Story continues...

***********

"Here. Go down underneath this old Triune temple," Itherael directed the duo approaching on horseback. "At the core, you shall find an object of great power. Retrieve that object so that I might unravel the mystery we are facing here."

Cassie dismounted and looked at the entrance. It looked to be some sort of basement that leads further underground. "Why is it that we are always going into some kind of hole in the ground?" she protested.

"Because that's where the evil things lurk," Ginny replied and dismounted as well. "How are we supposed to recognize this object of power?" she asked but there was no reply. Both of the women looked around but Itherael's vision was gone. "Well, I guess we're on our own then," Ginny said with resignation.

Cassie and Ginny checked their gears. After making sure that they have all the things they needed, they looked at each other and nodded. Without another word they entered the basement. Cassie's magical source lit their path as they descended the stairs. After going down several levels of what seemed to be a conventional but large basement, they came to an ornate door carved with strange markings and symbols.

"This is it," Ginny said while giving the door a once over. "You ready?" she asked Cassie.

"As ready as I'll ever be," Cassie replied. "Be careful, ok?"

Ginny smiled at Cassie's remark. She knew that Cassie was concerned about her. She feels the same way. "I'll try not to die," Ginny replied playfully and that earned her an disapproving glare from Cassie. Then she let out an audible breath and pushed the door open.

Once the door was opened, both Ginny and Cassie found themselves looking into a huge cavernous shaft. In the middle of the shaft a large column of rock rose from the seemingly bottomless abyss below them. An amber glow can be seen in the depths below. Ginny guessed that was caused by the glow of lava. A wide set of stairs descended from the door and spiralled downwards around the central column for about 50 feet before it led into an opening on the opposite rock face.

"Let's go," Ginny said and made her way down. Cassie followed close behind.

Meanwhile in another part of Sanctuary...

Sara fired a beam of energy from her hand. The beam blasted through the head of the monstrous beast she was fighting and it collapsed. All around her, remains of fallen demons and beasts were scattered. She made her way further into the caverns. The Witchblade had formed a full body armor for Sara and she had been fighting all manners of beasts for the last hour or so since she has entered these caverns.

Sara had only one goal in mind. To get to that portal that will lead her to find Hope's abductor. The priest had told her that the portal to the High Heavens was hidden deep inside these caverns and that numerous vicious beasts and demons blocked her path. Sara had thanked the priest and set out to accomplish her goal. Covered from head to toe in the organic-metallic armor of the Withcblade and sporting claws on both her hands and feet, Sara Pezzini did not look very different from the beast she was killing. To Sara, eliminating these beasts and demons is as easy as slicing through butter with a hot knife with the Witchblade in her possession.

Presently Sara came to a large chamber deep inside the caverns. In the middle of this cavern was the thing that Sara was searching for - the portal stone that will open up the portal to the High Heavens. In between Sara and the device lies a horde of Fallen Imps, a Fallen Overseer and a huge Demonic Tremor. The imps quickly rushed towards Sara, weapons raised and hungering for blood.

Sara made a blade protrude from each of her hands. The organic-metallic matter that covered her extended from her hands and shaped itself into two long, narrow razor-sharp blades. With a roar, she charged at the advancing imps and unleashed her fury. In a flash, Sara has crossed the chamber and is now standing in front of the portal stone, the demons behind her. As she retracted the blades, she touched and activated the portal. As she stepped into the glowing gateway, the demons behind her fell into pieces on the floor and the demonic tremor was cleaved neatly into 2 halves. Blood and grime spilled out of the mutilated carcasses. None survived.

As Sara emerged on the other side of the portal, she stepped into a vastly different environment. The dark, dank and oppressive caverns became a bright sunny landscape with neatly trimmed grass and beautiful tress dotting it. She was standing at the edge of a woods with grassy plains in front of her streching away towards the horizon. In the distance a majectic city rose. Everything was gleaming and shiny. The towers stood tall and proud. Sara had to take a moment for her eyes to adjust to the sudden brightness. She then surveyed the scene in front of her. There's no doubt about it, the Silver City stood in front of her. That's where she will find Imperius and Hope.

"Hang on, Hope! Mamma's coming," Sara said as she formed a pair of wings on her back and took flight.

On with the story....

**********

Cassie shot a freeze ray towards an advancing Copper Fang Lurker and the snake-like demon with a female upper torso froze instantly. A crossbow bolt whistled past Cassie's ear and struck the frozen demon and richocheted of the target and deflected itself into the eye of another Copper Fang Lurker to the right. Both demons were dead before their bodies hit the ground.

"That's the last of them," Cassie said. Ginny walked to Cassie's side from behind her, keeping a wary eye out for any of the demons that may be playing dead and waiting to strike. She found none alive.

"Well, onwards then," Ginny said. They have been making their way through the bowels of the earth for the better part of 2 hours since they descended from the basement of the ruins. The caverns had snaked and twisted its way down ever deeper, often opening up into large cavities and alcoves along the way. They have encounter quite a number of vicious beasts and demons but none that they could not handle.

"How are we supposed to find something when we don't even know what we are looking for?" Cassie asked as they ventured on.

"I guess we will know when we see it," Ginny said. "Keep your eyes open."

After a while the path they were on began to start levelling instead of dipping downwards in an incline. They then walked into a huge cavity and inside that was a whole crypt like building carved right out of the rocks. Both Cassie and Ginny stopped at the sight. Something tells them that they have arrived at their destination.

Before they could advance towards the crypt, a giggle echoed from the darkness, "Welcome to the domain of Mirryea," the sinister sounding voice said. "Just in time for dinner!" the voice taunted.

"Show yourself!" Ginny demanded as Cassie increased the light coming from her magical source.

The light expanded and showed that the cavern was bigger than they had first thought. The ceiling was some 20 feet above them, dotted with stalagmites of various sizes. Besides that, it was lined with some kind of webbing.

"It's a spider demon!" Cassie said and saw a shadow flitting across the edges of the light cast by her magical source. Just as she said that she saw some kind of liquid being shot at her. Cassie realized too late that it was the spider demon's webbing. The webbing pooled around Cassie and hindered her movements. Sensing danger Cassie cast her diamond skin spell and encased herself in a crystal armor. She was just in time as the spider demon swung down and slashed at her with her claws which knocked Cassie off her feet.

Seeing Cassie knocked down, Ginny quickly fired a volley of bolts at the demon which quickly retreated back into the shadows. Ginny ran to Cassie's side and helped her up. "Are you alright?" she asked.

"Yeah," Cassie replied. Just as she got to her feet she noticed another attack coming. "Watch out!" Cassie said and pushed Ginny away as she jumped the opposite direction. A stream of caustic poison shot past the space where they were standing just a second ago.

"Damn!" Ginny said as she rolled to break her fall and quickly got back on her feet. "We can't see her while she's lurking above us! Do you have any tricks to get more light up there?"

"Sure have!" Cassie said and threw her magical source up in the air. She chanted a spell and the globe was suspended there near the ceiling and began
to glow fiercely. Blue light began to flood the cavern.

"There!" Ginny said and quickly unleashed a volley of shots at the demon. A shrill scream was heard as the demon took a shot and ran into a hole in
the ceiling for cover. Ginny was surprised at how many holes and cracks there were in the cavern. "Cassie! Keep an eye out for those openings and holes! They may be interconnected and she may come out of any one of them!"

Ginny's observation was correct but instead of the demon appearing, scores of spiders as large as cats began pouring out of most of those openings.

"Crap!" Ginny shouted and began shooting bolts with the lightning rune. As the shoot hit the rock surface, electricity spread from the arrow head and
electrified a small area around it. Anything caught in it will be electrocuted.

Cassie quickly invoked a blizzard spell. Razor sharp icicles rained down upon the spiders and impaled any that caught in the magical storm. As the spiders' numbers was getting cut down, the demon re-emerged and struck. She swung down from of the holes and grabbed Ginny from behind. The impact knocked Ginny's crossbow out from her hands.

"Ginny!" Cassie called out. She fired several arcane bolts at the retreating demon that was carrying Ginny up towards another hole in the ceiling but missed. Ginny quickly drew out a dagger and shot it out with all her strength. The blade embedded itself into the spider demon's abdomen and exited through it's back. The demon let out another shriek and released Ginny. As both fell Ginny fired another 2 daggers at the demon. Both blades penetrated the demon and it crashed onto the ground dead. Ginny quickly rolled as she hit the ground to break her fall and got back on her feet. Cassie ran towards Ginny's side and they both let out a breath of relief to find the demon finally dead.

The two women walked towards the crypt and entered it. Locked within one of the rooms inside the crypt, they found what they were looking for.

"You have got to be kidding me!" Cassie said as they saw the object. It defied all their expectations of what it would be.

Ok.. the next part is done...

After this, it's going to be a long break as I try to shape my story into a coherent flow. I got bits and pieces here and there and I got the ending... but I need to piece them together.. so patience is advised...

*********

As Sara soared over the Silver City, she was sure that she was no longer in New York city. The majestic towers that rose had a totally different architectural design and also everything was clean and sparkly. Buildings and walkways all gleamed and gold or silver trimmings were everywhere. She did not know why Hope was brought here but she's determined to find her and get her back. Sara remembered that the priest had told her that Imperius would most likely be in the Halls of Valor. Problem is Sara did not know where the Halls of Valor are. Before she could dwell on that problem any longer Sara saw a group of angels flying towards her.

"Halt! Who goes there? Why are you here in the High Heavens!" the leader of the group demanded as they came within earshot. There were six of them.

"I am looking for Imperius!" Sara said. "You do not need to concern yourself about who I am!" Sara noticed that all the angels are armed. They carried either a sword or a spear and like Imperius, they too have wings that are more like energy tendrils. They definitely are not the Angelus warriors she's familiar with.

"What insolence!" the lead angel said. "Leave immediately or we shall be forced to take action!"

"I have no quarrel with you!" Sara replied. "Just tell Imperius to return what he has taken and I shall leave willingly!"

"Leave now or face the consequences!" the lead angel warned again.

"I do not wish to fight you but I will if I must!" Sara said. She noticed that she cannot see any of the angel's faces. They were all hooded in one way or another and inside those hoods was just a black void and no faces can be seen.

"Know that you ignore our warning at your own peril!" the lead angel said. "Get her and throw her out of the High Heavens!" the angel ordered.

Immediately 2 of the angels broke from the main group and flew towards Sara with spears extended. Sara dodged the first pass and formed a blade on her right hand. The 2 angels came around and charged at her again. When they came close they struck with their spears. Sara dodged one of them and parried the other with her blade. She then kicked out hard with her right leg and sent one of the angels crashing to the ground below. The angels were taken aback by the force displayed by Sara.

"Get her!" the lead angel shouted again and this time all of the angels swarmed at her. Sara tried to dodge and block their attacks but one of their hits connected and she found herself falling to the ground. Quickly turning in the air, Sara righted herself and managed to land. She decided that it would be more advantageous to remain on the ground and started running through the streets. The angels gave pursuit. Seeing a couple of them in the air behind her, Sara quickly turned a corner. While she was out of the angel's sight, Sara quickly scaled the building's wall and waited for the angels to fly past. She then launched herself onto the nearest one and kicked hard. The angel smashed into the wall and fell to the streets below. Sara then took advantage of the confusion to get close to the other angel. Before the angel to react, Sara was already right in front of it. Sara punched the angel hard right in the face and it too went down.

Having knocked down two of her pursuers, Sara landed again and continued to run in a zig-zag pattern through the streets. As she turned at a junction she heard the lead angel shouting.

"Keep her away from the Halls of Valor!" the command echoed through the street. Sara looked at the building in front of her.

"So, this is the Halls of Valor!" Sara thought to herself and headed straight towards it. The front doors were closed. Sara held out her right palm and aimed it at the door. A beam of energy shot from her palm and blew the doors wide open. Sara found herself inside a large circular lobby. On a landing on the second floor was the angel she was looking for.

"Imperius!" Sara shouted. "Return what you have taken from me!"

The pursuing angels arrived and effectively blocked Sara's exit from the building. "Sir! We're sorry for our incompetence, but we will deal with the intruder and take her away!" the lead angel said.

Imperius raised his hands and waved them away. "No. Leave her to me," Imperius said.

Sara turned her attention to Imperius as the other angels began to stand down.

"You are a Nephalem," Imperius said to Sara. "But you are different," he mused.

"Return Hope to me!" Sara demanded.

"Do you not know it is a sacrilege for you to set foot in the High Heavens?" Imperius shouted, ignoring Sara.

Sara lost all patience and charged at Imperius. In a flash she was already in front of Imperius and was bringing her blade down fast. Imperius barely had time to summon his spear to parry the blow. The force of Sara's blow was so great that it forced Imperius onto one of his knees. Imperius quickly lashed out with his other leg in an attempt to sweep Sara off her feet. Sara saw that attack and vaulted backward and landed about 10 feet away. Imperius pointed his spear at Sara and a tongue of flame shot out. Sara raised both her arms in front of her and formed a shield with the Witchblade. As the fire stopped, she felt a hard kick that knocked her back another few feet. As she dropped her hands, she saw that Imperius had jumped up in front and above her and is about to swing his spear down hard on her. She quickly side stepped and the spear crash and broke the marble flooring on the spot where she was. Sara hit back with a punch that caught Imperius on his left cheek and sent him crashing onto the wall behind him. Imperius got up and continued to trade blows with Sara.

Meawhile, in the Library of Fate.

Itherael felt uneasy. The source of his unease felt very close. It was so close that he felt that the disturbance was right in the High Heavens itself. Before he could open the tomes of Fate for the High Heavens, a vision appeared in front him. It was the demon hunter and her friend the wizard. They were using the Seeing Stone that he had given them so that they could contact him when the need arose.

"Itherael," Ginny's vision said. "We've found your object but we do not think that it's all that powerful."

"What do you mean, demon hunter?" Itherael asked puzzled.

"Well, to be honest we are not sure if this is what you were looking for, but there's no other object of interest in here," Ginny continued. "You might as well take a look."

The vision then changed and Itherael saw the object. Indeed it was the object of power that he was looking for but the form in which the object was is strange even for Itherael.

"Well done, demon hunter," Itherael said. "Indeed that is the object I am looking for but it's form is not what I was expecting. I will now open a portal to your location. Please bring it straight to me," Itherael ordered.

Imperius was still trading blows with Sara in the Halls of Valor, each seemingly unable to get the upper hand but the battle is reducing much of the halls into ruins. Auriel, the archangel of Hope decided to drop by as word got about that the stranger in the high heavens is asking for Hope.

When Auriel stepped into the Halls of Valor, the battle between the two was still raging ferociously.

"Stop nephalem!" Auriel said in a commanding voice. "I am the Hope you are seeking. Stop this destruction and madness now!"

Sara took one look at Auriel and let out a scream of fury.

"I do not know what joke you are all trying to pull, but this will not end well for you!" Sara yelled and leapt at Auriel.

Auriel was shocked at how fast Sara could move. Before she could even react, Sara was right in front of her and landed a punch on her shoulders. Apart from the incredible force Auriel also felt something sharp penetrating her. It was a sharpened claw that Sara had just formed at the end of her fist. It went clear through the armor of the archangel of Hope. Auriel fell to her knees.

"No!" Imperius called out as he saw Sara impaling Auriel. He dashed towards Sara's back, spear primed to strike.

Sara felt Imperius coming at her and ducked the spear aimed at her head. As the bladed part of the spear whooshed past, Sara spun on her heels and unleashed an uppercut that caught Imperius right in the stomach. A burst of light flashed as Sara's claw burst through the back of Imperius armor.

Meanwhile on Sanctuary, the skies darkened and lightning flashed across the thick dark ominous clouds that appeared suddenly. Sunlight faded and all of the people on Sanctuary felt despair. All but the bravest of the soldiers in Bastion Keep dropped their weapons as the lightning flashed and the thunder rumbled. It was as if hope and valor were abruptly extinguished from their souls.

Down in the core of the Arreat's crater, Azmodan laughed maniacally at turn of events.

"Our plan has succeeded beyond our expectations!" Azmodan said to Belial. "Both Imperius' and Auriel's flame has been snuffed out. You are wise to bring this Balance from this Earth. She is truly a power to reckon with!"

"Yes, victory is close at hand," Belial agreed. "Now is the time we unleash the armies of the Burning Hells onto Sanctuary and claim what is rightfully ours!"

Added on November 2, 2012, 11:36 pmOK! Been long time since this thread was updated. IF there's anyone waiting for the story to be completed, it is now.

I had promised myself that I would finish this story and I did.

If anyone's still interested, here's the conclusion to "Maintaining The Balance" story arc.

"Wow! So this is what the High Heavens look like," Cassie said as she stepped out of the portal and into the Library of Fate. "Everything is so shiny and... clean!"

"Bring me the object," Itherael requested as soon as the duo stepped through the portal. Cassie promptly handed over the baby she was holding. The baby was on the verge of crying and Cassie is relieved to have it taken from her hands.

"Ahh.. yes," Itherael said as he cradled the baby in his arms. "This nephalem child holds great powers but she does not belong here..." Itherael stopped suddenly as he felt a tremor and a sudden pang of despair running through his soul.

"What was that?" Ginny said, feeling the same thing.

"Woe is upon us!" Itherael said. "Quickly now, follow me!" he continued and hurried outside.

A short while later, the trio stepped into the broken Halls of Valor to see Sara throwing a limp Imperius to the floor. She then turned towards a badly injured Auriel and raised her bladed right hand up high. They were horrified to see the carnage in the halls. Fallen angels were strewn everywhere. Debris littered the area.

"Tell me where Hope is or suffer the consequences!" Sara yelled barely able to contain her rage. "I will tear this place apart if I have to!"

"I do not know what it is you speak of," Auriel replied weakly. "I am hope.."

"Arrghhh!" Sara yelled and poised to strike. Just as she was about to let the blade fall a woman in a bright coloured robe appeared beside Auriel and a semi-transparent dome enveloped the three of them. As the blade fell, Sara saw the woman acting very quickly. Her moves were almost too fast for her to see. She quickly cradled Auriel in her arms and then both of them disappeared in a flash of light. Sara's bladed hand swiped at empty space where Auriel had been just a fraction of a second ago. As Sara began to search the area for the strange woman and Auriel she saw 3 crossbow bolt rocketing towards her face. Sara quickly lifted her left arm and the Witchblade formed a shield and deflected the bolts. With the danger passed, she dropped her arm and saw the 3 new opponents in the halls. Gritting her teeth she charged towards them.

"Stop!" Itherael called out. "I have what you seek!" he said holding out the baby for Sara to see.

Sara's eyes widened as she saw Hope in this angel's arms. She quickly halted her attack. The blades on her hands retracted and her armor receeded. The full body armor now seemed to recede to form only a gauntlet on Sara's right hand. She quickly took Hope from Itherael and checked the baby.

"Hope! Thank God you're alright!" Sara said hugging the baby tight against her chest and tears welling in her eyes.

Ginny quickly ran to check on Imperius while Cassie tended to Auriel after teleporting her away from harm's way.

"How are they?" Itherael asked.

"Barely breathing but still alive," Ginny said and Cassie echoed the same sentiment about Auriel.

Itherael raised his arms and half a dozen angel appeared and took the wounded Auriel and Imperius away, leaving Cassie, Ginny and Sara alone with him in the runied halls.

"Nephalem," Itherael said to Sara. "Now that we have returned your child to you, would you help us in our time of need?"

"I have no interest in your matters," Sara said, her voice cold but it was apparent that her rage has subsided. "I only wish to go home. I am no longer a threat to you all. Just send us home," Sara continued.

"Therein lies the problem," Itherael said. "It is not us that brought you here. We were all manipulated by the lords of the Burning Hells and I suspect that they were the ones who abducted your child. I also suspect that they are the ones who hold the key to send you home."

"There's always a catch!" Sara sighed. "Fine! What do I need to do."

"We will speak more in my library. Come," Itherael said and led the group out of the halls.

Cassie eyed Sara curiously as they followed Itherael. "You are dressed in very strange clothes," she commented looking at Sara's short sleeved T-shirt and short pants.

"I could say the same about you," Sara replied in a dead pan manner after giving Cassie a quick once-over. "You looked like you've just stepped out of a cosplay event."

"Cosplay?" Cassie said, not understanding the term. "And what happened to your armor? They just sort of disappeared!"

"Never mind," Sara said as they left the halls.

Meanwhile at Bastion Keep.

The darkened skies had upped the unease felt in general by the soldier's manning the Keep and forming the front lines against the demons' attack. For days now the humans and their angel allies have seen the demon army amassing near the base of Arreat's Crater. So far the demons have only been gathering and there were no signs of them moving to attack. Responding in kind, the humans have also bolstered their numbers at the keep. Even the angels have sent their armies under the command of archangel Tyrael. Now with the feeling of despair sweeping over the hearts of men and angels alike the outlook seemed even bleaker.

As if things weren't bad enough a thin wisp started to appear over the crater of the broken mountain. A soldier on the lookout saw the wisp rising out of the crater's mouth. He peered harder into the distance in an attempt to see what it was. The thin wisp grew thicker the further it rose into the skies and by the looks of things it cannot be smoke.

As he strained his eyes, a cold shiver shot down his spine. He suddenly knew what the wisps were.

"Moloks! The demons are taking to the skies!" the soldier sounded the alert as the wisp grew into an ominous black cloud heading their way.

Tyrael rushed to the front lines. The demons are finally starting their assault. They have formed lines and are marching towards them.

"To arms! To arms!" Tyrael commanded. "Ready the archers! Form your lines! Prepare for battle!"

The humans soldiers formed their defense lines. Pikemen at the very front with their pikes thrusted out to meet the enemies. Archers lined themselves behind these pikemen, readying the bow and arrows.

"Raise the catapults!" a command was heard being called out over the nervous troops.

Tyrael watched the oncoming black cloud intently. The mass of flying Moloks casts a huge shadow over the imminent battlefield. It was as if a blanket of doom was about to be thrown over the defending men and angels alike. The flying monstrosities lead the ground army and they are closing in fast.

"My angel brethren! Rise now! Turn back this demon horde!" Tyrael commanded and took off. The angels under his command, followed suit a second later.

From a watch tower back at the Keep, it looked like a single streak of light shooting skywards followed by a whole line of lights behind it as the angels rose to meet the Moloks. The bright line closed in on the approaching shadow and the 2 lines joined into a blur. Down on the ground the demon troops also closed in.

As the 2 armies came closer and closer a thumping sound can be heard across the top of the Keep. The catapults have unleashed their fiery payload. The huge burning barrels of oil shot out towards the demon's ranks like deadly crashing comets. Cluster of fire burst onto the battlefield where ever they landed. After the initial fiery payload, the catapults sent out the conventional payloads of rocks and boulders. The gap between the 2 large armies disappeared.

The battle for Sanctuary has begun in earnest.

As the battle raged on above the ground near Bastion Keep, another smaller battle raged on underground ver near to Arreat's Crater's core. A trio of female warriors fought their way through a wave of demons. A wizard, a demon hunter and woman with an artifact called the Witchblade from Earth.

Cassie fired a blast of freeze ray from her hand at the advancing demons. It froze them solid and a crossbow bolt shot past her to hit the frozen mob and shattered them. Cassie quickly turned her attention to an advancing party of succubus. The succubi fired a barrage of deadly energy balls at her and she had to jump to one side to dodge. As she tried to regain her footing, she saw that one of them had swooped down towards her and was about to slash into her with its razor sharp claws.

Cassie desperately tried to conjure up her diamond skin spell to ward the blow but she realized to her dismay that she would not be able to complete her incantations before the claw connect. As she shut her eyes in anticipation of the blow, she heard a grunt and the blow never landed. Cassie opened her eyes and saw that Sara had grabbed that succubus and threw her aside. As the winged female demon hit the wall of the cavern, Sara unleashed a shot of energy from her hand and the succubus disintegrated.

Ginny used the time to dispatch the rest of the succubi with a spray of bolts from her rapidly firing crossbows. The cavern finally fell silent as all the demon were defeated.

"I thought the place would not be well guarded," Cassie said, picking herself up from the ground. "Didn't Itherael said Belial and Azmodan will be sending their troops in an all out attack against Bastion Keep? Why are there so many more demons here?"

"You think that they will leave their command posts unguarded?" Sara replied. "Scumbags like them will always have their bodyguards around. They are cowards and will always have lackeys protecting their asses!"

"Scumbags?" Cassie asked unfamiliar with that term.

"Let's just go," Ginny said. "The sooner we find the portal to Earth, the better. And I'll bet that we will find the place crawling with demons! Which way?" Ginny asked, looking at Sara.

Sara paused for a while as she and the witchblade tried to locate the energy signature from the portal. Itherael had said that since the portal to earth links Sanctuary to another realm, it will likely give off an energy signature from Earth. He was right. Sara could detect an energy wavelength that matches the one from the Witchblade. They had travelled deep into the crater of Arreat.

"This way!" Sara said after determining the location and the trio quickly moved towards the indicated tunnel.

Sensing the absence of valor and hope, the lords of the Burning Hells had unleashed the bulk of their armies against the defenders. Time is running short.

Tyrael slashed with his sword and another Molok fell to its death. He had only been in battle for about 2 hours it felt like days had already passed. Although it was evident that the angels and himself are the more skillful combatants in the skies, the Moloks' numbers threatened to overwhelm them. The oncoming waves of Moloks seemed to be unending. Already some of his angel brethren has fallen to this onslaught.

Tyrael swerved to avoid the claws of a Molok that came too close. A flash of metal and it was the end for that demon. Tyrael had lost count of how many he had taken out but it seemed that more are spewing from the broken crater even as they turned the skies into a slaughter house.

Itherael had requested him to hold the lines for as long as possible. He had another plan to end the battle. Tyrael had not asked what the plan was. Now he hoped against hope that Itherael's plan was going smoothly. He had never seen the demons pour out in such numbers. Just before the battle started he had lost the bond to both Auriel and Imperius. That had never happened before. Things have felt desperate. They just might lose this battle.

Tyrael shook the depressing thought out of his mind and let out a war cry. He doubled his effort and sliced through the wave of oncoming Moloks. The dead winged demons dropped like flies, unable to stem Tyrael's advance. Now, more than ever before, the humans needed some assurance that their fight would not be in vain.

Underground near the crater's core, the trio of fierce female warriors broke into yet another cavern. This cavern was huge and was decorated
differently. The walls were not roughly hewn rocks like the many that they have saw before in their push to find the portal that links to earth. It also have openings to many other tunnels or niches.

The trio stopped. Sara paused to check. "The portal is very close," she said.

There were no demons in sight.

"Watch your steps," Ginny said with her crossbow raised. "This is a trap if I ever saw one!"

The three instinctively covered each other's back as they slowly advanced towards the middle. Before they had taken 3 steps a demented snicker filled the cavern.

"Ha ha ha ha!" the fell voice boomed over them. "You are a careful *******, demon hunter! But it makes no difference. You are already ensnared!"

"Show yourself!" Cassie demanded as her eyes swept the entire place.

"Very well," the voice said in compliance. A shadow moved at the far end and something came into view.

"Azmodan!" Ginny cried out and brought her crossbow to bear. She was about to fire when Sara's hand grabbed the crossbow firmly and forced it down.

"What the..?" Ginny exclaimed in surprise. Cassie was equally shocked when she realised that Sara had also put her other hand out in front of her to stop her actions.

"Wait!" Sara said as she stood in between Cassie and Ginny. "Scumbags like him do not simply walk into the line of fire without having a trump card hidden up their sleeves! What's your game Azmodan!"

Another wicked laugh came from the hideous creature called Azmodan. "Your looks belies the wisdom that you have in you nephalem!" he said.

"Thanks for the compliment creep!" Sara replied coldly. "Spill the bargain! I ain't got all day!"

"Very well. I shall get straight to it," Azmodan said. "Leave your artifact of power with me and I shall grant safe passage to you back to your Earth."

"Your promise is not worth crap, Azmodan!" Ginny scowled. "Let's just be done with him! He can't take all three of us together!"

"No!" Sara said firmly. "He knows that too and if he knows that why is he still standing there in the open? What's the catch demon?" Sara demanded. "Why should we not just blow you to kingdom come? Why should we take your offer?"

"Because I have these," Azmodan replied sneeringly and gestured to some unseen party.

From two openings, one on each side of Azmodan, 2 cages were pushed into the cavern. In one of them was Itherael. He looked to be bound, weak and wounded but he was conscious. In the other was a small bundle.

"Hope!" Sara cried out in surprise. "Damn you Azmodan! Release her immediately or you shall feel my wrath!"

"Oh but that's what I intend to do right from the start," Azmodan teased. "I have no wish to test your might nephalem. Your ability to take out the archangels have proven how formidable you are in combat. I'm merely offering you the way back to your Earth. You may take your offspring with you. I have no further use of it. All I ask in return is your artifact of power. It's that simple really," Azmodan said.

"He cannot be trusted!" Cassie said. Sara held her back again by raising her hand in front of her.

"What makes you think I will just give you this artifact?" Sara said. "What makes you think that I cannot just take you down and free Hope and Itherael by myself?"

"Oh, I doubt your abilities not, nephalem!" Azmodan replied and fished out a glowing piece of crystal the size of a large apple. "This is a splinter from the Worldstone. This is the key to open the portal to your Earth. It has immense power as you can see. I have with me not just this piece. I have another piece of splinter which I have embedded deep within your Earth's surface. Near the core. If it explodes, and it will if I am not alive to stop it, it will destroy your precious Earth. So it's your choice, either you leave the artifact with me or your Earth will be destroyed!"

"Is what he says true?" Sara asked her companions. "Can this Worldstone splinter cause that much damage?"

"Yes!" Cassie quipped. "The Worldstone holds immense power! It's destruction is what demolished Mount Arreat and created this crater!"

"Detonating a splinter close to Earth's core will cause untold natural disasters to be unleashed all over the world," Sara surmised. Azmodan merely chuckled at the statement.

"How do I know that you actually have another splinter of this Worldstone as you claim, scum?" Sara retorted. "For all I know you could be bluffing through your rotted mouth!"

"Wise!" Azmodan complimented again. "I will show you then!" With that he opened a portal some 10 feet to his right. Beyond the portal was another cavern and within that cavern clearly was another glowing crystal shard. The shard was bigger than the one Azmodan held in his hands.

Azmodan then opened another portal about 10 feet to his left. Beyond this one, Sara could see Hope's bedroom. He then gestured again and the succubus that wheeled in the cages unlocked Hope's cage.

"My offer stands," Azmodan said. "Leave your artifact and you can return to your world along with your offspring. You can even retrieve the Worldstone splinter and return it to me before you go back to your home." Azmodan stepped backwards a few feet and gestured to the 2 opened portals.

"Then you leave me no choice," Sara said.

"No!" Ginny protested.

"You can't trust him!" Cassie added.

Sara held her hands out to either side to stop both of the women. "I cannot choose the destruction of my world! I have no choice but to comply with him!"

"Then you would rather sacrifice our world?" Cassie asked incredulously.

"We can take him!" Ginny said holding back her hatred towards the demon lord. "We will take him down before he can close the portals!" she said and looked over to Cassie. "Isn't that so Cassie?"

"That's right!" Cassie agreed and readied herself for battle.

"No!" Sara shouted firmly. "How many demon lords do you see here? Wasn't there another? Belial or something? Even if we take Azmodan down, won't Belial be able to set off the splinter? This is a no-win situation!"

The statement caused both Cassie and Ginny to pause to reflect. That brief moment of inattentiveness was all Sara needed. She shot out her hands and grabbed both Cassie and Ginny by the throat.

"What..?" Ginny said taken by surprise.

"Sara?" Cassie asked bewildered.

"I'm sorry gals," Sara almost whispered as she unleashed electrical current through the Witchblade. The shock cause both Ginny and Cassie to scream out in agony and then they went limp. Sara then dropped them to the ground where they fell and stayed motionless on the floor.

"There!" Sara announced. "I have eliminated the threat. Now, this is my bargain to you. I will leave the artifact here but not before I put Hope back in her room. After Hope is back on her bed I shall return here. I shall then retrieve the splinter and hand them over to you along with the artifact. After which I will step through the portal to Hope's room and you shall close both portals!"

"You are wise but I am no fool!" Azmodan sneered. "You may place your Hope back in her room. After you return here, I need you to remove that artifact from your hands and leave it here. Only then you may retrieve the splinter. This is my final offer!"

Sara bit her lips. Azmodan was clearly no fool. He could sense the danger in Sara's plan. She has no other choice. The fate of planet Earth lies in here hands.

"Agreed!" Sara said bitterly.

"Proceed then," Azmodan said.

Sara went to gather Hope. She quickly checked her condition. Apart from being asleep, Hope has no other injury. Sara then placed her back onto her cot. She leaned in to give her a gentle kiss on her forehead. A tear fell from her eyes onto Hope's face and she stirred a little. Sara gently wiped it away with her hands. "Goodbye baby!" she whispered sadly. "Momma may never see you again. If that happens, I need you to grow up strong for momma, ok?"

Hope stirred again and babbled something in reply. Sara gently stroked her face before straightening up and wiping the tears from her eyes. She steeled her expression before turning back to the portal. As she stepped out into the cavern again she said, "Close the portal!"

Azmodan raised one of his eyebrows at her comment. "Really?" he asked. A question aimed more towards Sara's motives than seeking clarification.

"Do it now or you'll never get the artifact!" Sara threatened.

"As you wish," Azmodan said and the portal to Hope's room closed.

Sara glanced at Itherael in his cage and found the archangel's black hooded faceless head looking back at her. He was barely moving in his weakened state. Sara then turned and walked towards the other portal. She paused right in front of it. The shard of glowing Worldstone was about 10 feet from the portal opening. The Witchblade armor receeded and condensed into a wristwatch like shape on Sara's right hand and Sara proceeded to take it off. She then quickly threw it towards where Ginny and Cassie were slumped and stepped through the portal.

Anticipating that Azmodan will betray her, Sara sprinted for the crystal shard which started to pulse once she stepped through the portal. Her fear were not unfounded. The portal started closing the moment she stepped through. Racing desperately towards the shard, Sara grabbed it, turned and hurled it with all her strength towards the closing portal.

"Itherael!" Sara yelled as the shard passed through the portal before it closed completely leaving Sara in pitch black darkness.

Azmodan had started to run towards the Witchblade when he saw the Worldstone shard whizzing past the almost closed portal. With a horrified look on his face Azmodan shouted, "No! That's impossible!" He then tried to run away from the pulsing crystal.

Itherael summoned all his remaining strength and projected a small portal in the shard's flight path. The pulsating crystal flew right into it and disappeared. Itherael slumped to the cage floor, sapped of all his strength.

Azmodan was caught unaware for a moment. The shard was gone. To where he did not know nor care as long as its not going to blow up in his face. Then he remembered the Witchblade and he ran towards it. He was halted in this endeavor too as the Witchblade began to move on its own accord.

Tendrils snaked up and went towards both Cassie and Ginny. The Witchblade wrapped itself around the two motionless figure and formed armor on them. Both Cassie and Ginny awoke and got up. Ginny bore the red crystal part of the Witchblade while Cassie had the blue crystal part.

"What in the hells just happened?" Cassie asked, disoriented for a while.

"Whoa! There's something in my head!" Ginny said.

Azmodan halted and started to retreat to make a getaway. Itherael shouted, "Quick! There's no time! Let the Witchblade guide you!"

Both Ginny and Cassie stopped fighting the presence in their minds and the Witchblade filled in the gaps of what happened when they were out cold. They exchanged knowing glances after a few seconds and went into action.

Cassie disappeared in a flash of light as she teleported away while Ginny grabbed her crossbow and quickly shot a bolt at the retreating Azmodan. The bolt caught the Lord of Sin in the shoulders and he dropped his shard of the Worldstone and howled out in pain. He hesistated to pick it up but the fast approaching demon hunter in Witchblade armor decided things for him and he beat a hasty retreat through one of the tunnels leading out.

Ginny quickly picked up the shard and then shot two bolts in quick succession to dispatch of the 2 succubus in the cavern. She then ran towards Itherael and busted him out of the cage.

"Sit tight!" she said and held her hands inches away from Itherael's face.

Itherael could feel some form of energy radiating from the clawed hand covered in the Witchblade's metallic-organic armor. He found his strength returning. "I hope Cassie made it in time," he said.

Meanwhile at Bastion Keep.

Tyrael was beginning to tire. The swarm of Moloks seemed to pour forth unabated. He had already lost half his angel army. The ground forces were not doing too good either. The human defenders are about to have their lines broken through.

"Damn!" Tyrael thought as he slashed his sword high and low, cutting through the demonic swarm. Itherael had asked him to be on the lookout for a sign that he will send to the battlefield but so far he had seen none. "Come on Itherael, we're not going to last much longer!" he muttered.

Then it happened. A flash of light and a small portal opened a little ways above and in the middle the demonic ground forces. Tyrael knew this was it. This was the sign from Itherael.

"Fall back!" he yelled out. His voice boomed over the entire battlefield as he used magic to enhance it. "Fall back and away from the portal!" he
commanded as he turned back towards the Keep. The angels fighting in the air followed suit and then the humans turned back.

A small glowing object fell through the portal as it closed and before it hit the ground it exploded voilently. The shockwave slammed Tyrael to the ground. He rolled to break the fall and then braced himself up against the force of the explosion. He saw many of the angels were similarly thrown to the ground. He knew this energy that was released. He had felt it before. The last time he was caught in a similar explosion, it almost killed him. Took him close to two decades to recover from it. The Worldstone.

When the dust finally settled, he saw that most of the demonic ground forces were decimated in the explosion. The rest that survived were scattered across the battlefield in isolated groups. When the humans saw this a thunderous cheer erupted from their ranks and they rallied. Their morale boosted they headed in to wipe out the remaining ground forces.

Tyrael then shifted his attention skywards. While the demons on the ground caught the brunt of the explosion, the flying Moloks largely came through unscathed. A small portion was caught in the explosion but the rest was unharmed although disoriented for a while but now they are regrouping. With death coming from above, the human forces won't stand a chance.

"My angel brethren!" Tyrael shouted again. "To the sky once more! Let's end this battle once and for all!" he commanded but he knew their numbers are not enough to repel the Moloks. He had to buy the humans as much time as they could to eradicate the demons on the ground so that they could turn their focus on the Moloks.

As he rose with his remaining army another flash appeared in the skies. It was no crystal that materialized but a strange figure. A female figure clad in a strange metallic armor that covered her whole body and it had wings. The female then transformed into a being of energy that glowed orange. The archon. Tyrael recognized that it was a form some high level human wizards could achieve.

The archon was none other than Cassie. She stretched out her hands and blasted a huge ray of energy forth. The beam stretched from where she was to as far as the crater. She swept it from left to right and began to mop the Moloks out from the sky. This went on for about 2 minutes. The beam effectively cleansed the sky of the Moloks' threat. Cassie could not believe her own eyes. The Witchblade had increased her archon's power exponentially.

When she finished, the skies were now clear. The Molok swarm has been effectively routed. Cassie herself was drained. She started to fall from the sky, the Witchblade armor had also receeded to become like a bracelet on her left hand. Tyrael saw her falling and dashed towards her. He caught her before she hit the ground.

"Oh.. thank you!" Cassie managed weakly as Tyrael's strong arms halted her descend.

"No milady! We should thank you!" Tyrael replied and landed her gently on the ground to joyous cheers from both the humans and angel soldiers. The battle was over. They had miraculously prevailed.

Back inside the cavern...

"Whoa! That was weird!" she said all of a sudden as she pressed a hand to her temple.

"What is it?" Itherael said as he got up feeling mostly recovered from his wounds.

"Some voice in my head told me that Cassie had made it. The demon army has been routed," she said staring incredulously at Itherael.

"This Witchblade is very interesting," Itherael commented. "And very powerful!"

"Now that we know Sanctuary will be free of the terror reign of the Lords of the Burning Hells, we should go retrieve the savior of Earth," Itherael said as a matter of fact. "Please hand me that shard of the Worldstone," Itherael requested.

Ginny handed him the crystal and he did some incantations and a portal opened. Beyond the portal they found Sara huddled in a fetal position with tears in her eyes. Ginny quickly ran forward and embraced Sara.

"It's alright now," Ginny reassured Sara as she held tightly to her sobbing.

"Thank God!" Sara said relieved. "I thought I was gonna die here all alone in complete darkness deep inside the earth! Thank God you came!" Sara sobbed.

"Shhh..," Ginny cooed soothingly. "It's alright now. I've got you. I've got you."

It was a few minutes before Sara could regain enough composure to walk through the portal. Itherael closed it and summoned another portal which opened to Hope's room. Without prompting Sara ran towards her baby, picked her up and held her tight. Tears streamed down her cheeks again.

"Rest now, human Sara," Itherael said from beyond the portal. "We shall meet again after you have rested. We will tie up all the loose ends then. Goodbye for now and thank you," Itherael said as he closed the portal leaving Sara with her baby in private.

Two days later.

Sara was back in Sanctuary and she was again inside the Halls of Valor. This time instead of an intruder, Sara was the guest of honor. Itherael was there and so was Tyrael, Auriel and Imperius. The archangels of Hope and Valor had recovered from their wounds. Cassie and Ginny were there too. There was much merry making and swapping of stories of what happened just 2 days ago.

"That was a very big gamble you took there Itherael," Ginny said when they learnt that it was Itherael that had plotted his own capture to lure Azmodan to come out in the open like that.

"I am not called the Archangel of Fate for nothing," he replied. "Through the streams of Fate, I saw that Azmodan will betray Sara in all possible outcomes. That he will detonate the Worldstone splinter was an event that will come to pass no matter what. The only question was where will it detonate. We decided that it would be most appropriate to let the demonic army shoulder the brunt of the explosion."

"Well you could have warned us earlier," Cassie complained good naturedly. "When Sara zapped me, I thought I was dead!"

"You were close to death," Sara said smiling. "It had to appear believable to Azmodan or he would not take the bait. I had to make sure Hope got home safely first. Of course I had full knowledge that the Witchblade would heal you up nicely. Anyway, it was helpful that both of you are attractive ladies so it was easy to convince the Witchblade to take you both as temporary hosts. The Witchblade, despite its name, is a male element you know?"

"What?" Cassie remarked incredulously. "I have been molested! The thing was all over me and it ripped up my robes!" Laughter followed that comment.

"Well I'm glad I'm rid of it for one," Ginny chipped in. "I do not like things messing with my head!" she continued eyeing the Witchblade which was now fully whole again on Sara's right hand. She then turned towards Itherael. "Hey! I thought you could only see the Fate of Sanctuary! How did you know that Sara will be able to chuck the piece of Worldstone back here from Earth before the portal closed?"

"I did not," Itherael admitted. "I could not see what fate will befall Earth. Sara will have to take credit for all that she has done when she stepped through that portal. That is why all of us here have to thank Sara for saving Sanctuary and Earth with that toss. If she had missed.. I do not want to think what would have happened. Suffice to say it would have doomed 2 worlds."

All eyes fell on Sara after Itherael's remarks. "I was lucky I guess," Sara shrugged it off. She glanced at Itherael and although she could not see his face under that hood, she knew that he was looking right back at her and she knew what look would be there had there been a face. Saying that it was luck was the understatement of the century. Both Sara and Itherael knew that they had been very, very, very lucky indeed.

As the evening ended, it was time for goodbyes. Itherael opened up the portal again with the Worldstone shard. Sara stepped through it and turned around to face her friends one last time.

"I guess this is it," Sara said finally. "It has been an honor fighting by your side," she said not knowing what else to say. How do you say goodbye forever? On the other side both Ginny and Cassie smiled.

"The honor was ours!" the said in unison and laughed at each other after that.

"Farewell Sara," Itherael said. "We will not be meeting again. It's for the best. The Balance belongs on Earth. Thank you again for saving Sanctuary."

Sara merely nodded with a smile on her face. Itherael held up the shard he was holding and with a spell crushed it into dust and let the ashes fall. The portal closed and Sara found herself staring at the wall in Hope's room. With a heavy sigh she turned around and watched Hope sleeping peacefully in her cot.

"I guess it's back to our normal life," Sara said quietly. "That is if you can call being the Host to the Witchblade as normal!" She kissed Hope on the forehead and headed to the door. She opened it quietly, walked through and closed it again behind her just as quietly.

THE END
