may I know what car? if mercedes benz post 2000 it wil indicate 999,999km or miles. Unless you program it at mercedes/specialist shop.

Most mechanic now have the tool to reset such an instrument.

BMW and Audi also will give something like ---- if you just change the cluster.

Some BMW models in particular will not even start as it is connected to the ECU or some kind of immobilizer.

This is to discourage tampering with the mileage.It is illegal in Europe/UK and USA to tamper the actual mileage.

In the UK this is called clocking and it is a serious crime.
