Everton have apologised to their fans after the overwhelmingly negative reaction to the club's proposed new crest, and want supporters to help design another badge for the season after next.

Due to time constraints with kit manufacturers Nike, the unpopular new design - which does not feature the club motto, Nil Satis Nisi Optimum, meaning 'Nothing but the best' - has to be used for the coming campaign.

But in a turnaround from the board, the crest will be redesigned again in the next year with wider fan consultation involved in the design process.

And if there are no hiccups in talks with Goodison chairman Bill Kenwright over the next couple of days, the Spaniard could be the Toffees new manager by the weekend.

Martinez, 39, told Latics owner Dave Whelan he wanted out during an emotional meeting yesterday afternoon.

Everton, who had already requested permission to talk to him over replacing David Moyes, will now have to cough up compensation of around £2million, to cover the remaining 12 months on his contract.

And if, as expected, Martinez and Kenwright are in agreement over factors like who comes as part of his backroom team, he will be confirmed as Goodison’s next gaffer.

Martinez has signed a four-year contract to take charge at Goodison Park, with his appointment confirmed on Wednesday, and Kenwright insists that he knew he wanted the Spaniard to be the club's next manager within 45 seconds of meeting him.

He compared their first meeting to the one he had with Moyes before bringing him in from Preston, then a second-tier club, in March 2002.

Kenwright said: "When David Moyes first came to see me 11 years ago, we were in a bad state. And the first words he said were: 'You're not going down.' With Roberto, almost his first words to me were: 'I'll get you in the Champions League.'

"That is extraordinary for a man who doesn't know much about the football club from the inside, but had obviously studied the football club. He'd obviously looked at what we'd been doing over the last few years. He's obviously recognised the massive achievements that David Moyes has made.

"But he sat and talked to me, and he showed me how he beat Manchester City at Wembley. He got out his little card and he said that he did this, this, this and this. And I'd gone to Wembley on that day and sat among the crowd, not to see Manchester City and Wigan, but to look at Roberto. And I watched him and studied him.

"He came into my office. Look I'm not going to say to you that it was like David Moyes, and he got me in 30 seconds. It took him at least 45 seconds.

"He understands the game. He understands Everton. He told me all about the history, all about our players, all about what he wanted to do, and it was a terrific meeting.

"It was the start of a couple of terrific meetings. All I can tell you is that, when you know, you know. There were other things that had to happen, and other people, and they were great."

Pointing to Martinez, Kenwright added: "I wish that 50,000 Evertonians could have been there with me for all of these meetings, as 50,000 of them would have turned round and said: 'Him.'"

Martinez brought centre-back Alcaraz, 30, to England from Brugge three years ago.

Now he is returning to former club Wigan for the Paraguayan, who is a free agent.

The arrival of Alcaraz increases the chances of John Heitinga moving to Turkish outfit Fenerbahce to boost Everton’s transfer kitty.

Arouna Kone has signed a three-year deal at Everton for a fee of £5million to follow manager Roberto Martinez from Wigan to Goodison Park. Martinez has sealed a reunion with the 29-year-old, whom he managed when he was in charge at the DW Stadium.  And the Ivory Coast star is honoured to be back under Martinez's guidance once again.

'For me it’s an honour to be back working with the manager once again, Kone told the club's official website, 'last season he really helped me a lot.

'For my first season I did the absolute best I could, but I think that joining up with him at this club is like another dimension for me and I hope that I’m going to continue to improve alongside him'

The Ivory Coast star scored 11 Premier League goals in his first season in England and helped Wigan lift the FA Cup, but he has made no secret of his desire to leave after the club were relegated in May.

'I feel delighted. For me it is the fruition of work that has been going on for a month now.

'hope that everything goes well and I can have a great season for the club, just like I did last year with Wigan.

'I’ve played against [Everton] in the Premier League and in the FA Cup and it is like moving up a level.

'Every player dreams of playing for a bigger club, and coming here is a big step up for me.'

Kone turned down a £6m move to Newcastle last week after both clubs were given permission to talk to the forward after meeting the release clause in the three-year contract he signed at Wigan last summer. His new Everton team-mates are heading off to Austria for pre-season this week Kone will not be joining them.

I’m raring to go, because when you join a club, it’s that desire to start working that first comes to mind,' said Kone. 'I’m ready and willing to get started and can’t wait to meet up with my team-mates. The quicker I settle both on and off the field, the better it is. I hope to settle in here really quickly which will help me to be at my very best from whenever I play my first game.'

New Everton manager Roberto Martinez has been reunited with two more former Wigan players, signing Antolin Alcaraz on a free transfer and goalkeeper Joel Robles from Atletico Madrid for an undisclosed fee.

Paraguay international Alcaraz was a free agent after his contract with the relegated Latics expired and the 30-year old has agreed a two-year deal with Everton. Alcaraz made 14 appearances last year and kept six clean sheets, including a particularly commanding performance at Goodison Park as Wigan knocked Everton out of the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage.

The Merseyside club have also confirmed the signing of young goalkeeper Joel Robles from Atletico Madrid on a long-term contract. Robles, who turned 23 last month, played in goal for Wigan during the club’s heroic 1-0 victory over Manchester City in last season’s FA Cup final and will provide competition for the Blues’ American international Tim Howard. The 6ft 5ins shot-stopper could make his first appearance for the Blues in Everton's friendly against Austria Vienna on Sunday.

A busy 48 hours for the new Everton manager concluded with the season-long loan acquisition of the 19-year-old following hot on the heels of the arrivals of Arouna Kone, Antolin Alcaraz and Joel Robles.

Deulofeu is widely regarded as one of the most exciting prospects to come out of Barcelona's academy yet he also has the potential to be the most frustrating, having been described as 'a raw Cristiano Ronaldo', and Martinez will need all his coaching skills to hone the teenager for the English game.

Born near Girona, Catalonia, Deulofeu joined Barcelona's youth academy in 2003, aged just nine. He made his debut for the B team in 2011 while still registered with the juniors and a month later was called up to the senior squad for La Liga match against Real Sociedad. He has had a few flirtations with the senior side since but has caught the eye in Barca's B team where he scored 18 goals last season and was one of the star figures for Spain's U20s. However, there is a strong belief he needs to step up a level now and, with his way to Barca's first team blocked, a move to the Premier League has been deemed his best route of development.

ur argument is invalid. why sell ur star player(s) if u can keep 'em? u need them to move forward. if they intend to leave, it's ur job, as a club manager to convince them to stay, not saying smfing liddat??      it'll backfire on martinez seriously.

The new Toffees boss has always spoken confidently of holding on to his two star men since he succeeded David Moyes as Everton boss last month, but he was less confident as he was asked to give his club’s supporters an assurance that the duo will remain a part of his squad.

"You should never ask a manager that," he is quoted in the Daily Mirror. "The modern game does not allow a manager to have that control."

"I don’t think speculation is healthy. We are just trying to become as good as we can before the transfer window closes. If we get clubs talking about our players we take it as compliment because it means the players have been impressing and doing really well.
