actually is it dota2 now official? i remember when i read dota2, valve said it is free like LOL, but why still need a beta key or invite gift only can play dota2?

Seen by many (Valve's lawyers excluded) as the real successor to the original Defense of the Ancients mod, Dota 2 has some major clout behind it -- namely Valve, and one of DotA's lead designers. It entered a semi-open beta in late 2011, and Valve shocked everyone a couple of months back with the announcement that Dota 2 would be even freer-to-play than League of Legends, with no extra cost for new characters (microtransactions are reserved for purely cosmetic items). That could be quite the challenge to the current status-quo model, and it's already started to shake things up, with Heroes of Newerth's announcement that it'll follow suit.

Dota 2 is a decidedly more hardcore game than LoL, though, owing to its Warcraft 3 roots and the extreme, mistake-punishing nature of the original DotA. This isn't an easy game to learn or to play, but if you're good, it might be the most rewarding in the long run. It sure doesn't hurt that Dota 2 is quickly becoming one of the most lucrative e-sports this side of StarCraft 2, a fact that's already landed it in the annual World Cyber Games event. And remember, this thing's still in beta.

but we do manage to see a near 10k increase in players in just a few months

I dont get attracted by the international. But i like dota2 versus LOL is because LOL "bor hoot" -hokkien or so call no balls to put in those BKB, etc items. LOL game play is different comapre to dota2, their dps, magic heros are equal in late game, you cant never 1 vs 3 but in dota2, everything is possible.

the most simple and easy different is the gold system, dota2 player can go play LOL but not mean every LOL player can play dota2. the gold system is simply make those newbie frustrate and leave game in dota2
