Thanks for your input.

No I'm not seriously looking for a lappy now.
Just browsing.
To my surprise, HP is under my affordable list now.

I notice that in there was a durability test done on the various brands of laptops and HP was dead last!
Asus, Toshiba and Sony were top 3.
user posted image

So should I consider buying a HP laptop or not?
It looks pretty bad.

I've been using a Sony for 5-6 years now and never ever had any problems with it.
Now I know Sony's are a few hundred bucks more expensive than other brands like Acer, HP, Asus etc but
it seems now I can get something of similar quality in Asus without paying a few hundred premium.

The SquareTrade reliability survey is very outdated already bro laugh.gif

1. Preferred Brand
Any brands with at least 2 years warranty, good services of course.
2. Budget
Below RM2500.
3. Usage
Assignments, some gaming for games like dota 2,dead space 2.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size
Prefer 14".
If budget is allowable, ultrabook is preferred... otherwise just laptop with lighter weight.

For the Specs , if possible then it's going to be:-
(i) graphic with 2GB,
(ii) memory of 4GB RAM,
(iii) i5 processor (2nd/3rd gen).

p/s: If the budget isn't enough for all these, just tell me and I will try to lower a bit the specs that I had stated.
Thanks in advance.

Thx for the info! Am in a dilemma now...Are the ones on top significantly better than if i get the Lenovo y580 3630qm version, upgrade to 16gb ram, add 128gb SSD, which prob cost less than above? Are the LEnovo warranty voided if i upgrade?
*
GPU-wise, the GTX660m is not as good as the GTX670m... but since you have additional budget to go for a SSD, the overall experience will be faster nod.gif
It all depends on how much you want to spend nod.gif
Upgrading to SSD won't void your warranty generally~

If you intend to upgrade your laptop later on in the future, you might wanna go for those with a stronger GPU since most are not upgradable once you purchased it... the HDD you can upgrade later when you have the money

Thx for info. Erm, like i asked is the gtx670m significantly better than 660m since i have to pay rm2k more? Worth that amount? Or better to use that money upgrade to SSD, 16gb RAM and w7pro? Am I right that w7pro is needed for 16GB? Still not sure after some survey...
*
Performance difference varies from game to game I guess, see here for more details:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Game...ds.13849.0.html
Its better than the GTX660m by a lot in certain games but not so much in others...
I think Windows 7 Home Premium would be able to support 16GB? Provided its 64-bit version?

QUOTE(coz4u @ Oct 2 2012, 11:10 AM)
Can anyone give me a good recommendation on a new laptop?

I am looking for a good laptop to conduct good usage on Autocad 2012. I want a good HD screen with good specs that can run any 3D programmes smoothly as well.

I was actually looking on Dell XPS but this model only comes in 14 inches (which I think is a little too small). 15 inch is the best size for me.

What laptop is recommended here?
SUMMARY:

1. Preferred brand: any will do. (Do not want much heat exposed)
2. Budget: -
3. Usage: No gaming. Pure Autocad Works with other engineering programmes
4. Preferred laptop screen size: 15"

Additional preferences:
a. HD Screen
b. the audio performance must not be weak
c. must have USB 3.0 port.
d. Good after-sales service
e. Good battery life

2. Budget: Preferably under 5k, would be more comfortable around 4.5k
3. Usage: Gaming (WoW, LoL, Dota 2, BF3, COD). Alot of photo and video editing, aswell as rendering.
4. Preferred laptop screen size: 15"

Additional preferences:
1. Must be 8gb of ram.
2. Must 7200rpm harddrive speed.
3. A laptop with good cooling system.

I've been interested in the Lenovo Y580 but cannot find the model with 7200rpm. I've also been looking at Sager notebooks but I havent heard of it much.

I was eying these 3 as well.
How would you compare their build quality and reliability?
The Square-something laptop failure was done in 2009 so it is quite old but should I take that into account?

Asus was 1st and HP was last.
I hope that HP has improved now but it would still not be on Asus' level right?
I mean I dont expect them to suddenly become a top 5 within 2-3 years time.
And especially not after their laptop prices has reduced a lot recently.
*
Your question is too general, I doubt anyone would be able to answer it laugh.gif
Every brand (even Acer) offers a wide range of notebooks, ranging from budget to premium to business line laptops... Each with different quality/ reliability
Just because a user has a bad experience with a particular line (mostly budget-line) of laptops, doesn't mean that all the other laptops from that manufacturer suck laugh.gif
Cheap no good, good no cheap~

So it all depends on which specific laptop that you are referring to, and most importantly, the warranty support offered by the company should something go wrong nod.gif
