Hi sifus,
My sister needs help in buying a laptop.

1. Preferred Brand : Not Acer
2. Budget : less than RM 1700
3. Usage : Microsoft Office, Browsing, Downloading, Watching movies, Photoshop, light online gaming, Gaming (The Sims).
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: Don't mind

Btw, she'd prefer if it comes with Windows already installed.
Thanks!

That's quite a lot to ask for laugh.gif
Can consider this?

Dell Inspiron 14, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT620M@RM1599[2.1kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), Ubuntu Linux 11.10; W7HB@RM1799

is the asus ux32 worth a buy? between this ultrabook zenbook series vs the other model the k46cm which one is better? from specs both seems to be identical
*
Specs are not identical at all laugh.gif
13"
Asus [Ultrabook] UX32VD-R3001V, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT620M + 24GB mSATA SSD + 500GB HDD@RM2999[1.3kg], 4GB, W7HP, 6-cell battery (6570mAH), 2 years international warranty

Asus
[Ultrabook]K46CM-WX090V, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT635M@RM2099[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, 4-cell battery, W7HP, OD
[Ultrabook]S46CM-WX023V, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT635M + 24GB mSATA + 500GB HDD@RM2599[2kg], 4GB, W7HP

Since you did not mention your usage, I'll just summarize:

- If you want a larger size ultrabook with good GPU power for gaming, then the K46. Comes with optical drive as well~
- If you want relatively longer battery life and lightness, yet still capable of a little bit of gaming, then the UX32

Haha.. Yeah she have a lot of request lol
Does the Dell model that you mention comes with Windows instead of Linux?
And what is your recommendation if the budget is increased to RM2,000?
Thanks!
*
Yes, it does come with W7HB@RM1799 nod.gif

For a budget of RM2k, can consider these:
14"
Acer V3-471G-53214G75, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT630M@RM2099[2.3kg], 2GB, 750GB W7HP, 3 years warranty
Asus A45Vm-VX113v, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT630M (2GB)@RM2099[2.4kg], 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HP
Dell Inspiron 14R, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT630M@RM1899[2.38kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm)
Dell Inspiron 14R (Special Edition), i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M(28nm Kepler)@RM2049[2.38kg], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm); backlit keyboard optional *price promotion until 27/09/2012
Lenovo Z480, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT630M@RM1999, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HP, colors: grey/red/blue

In terms of bang-for-buck, the 14R SE would be your best bet, but the GPU is a bit too overkill if only for The Sims haha laugh.gif
Otherwise, the 14R would be more than good enough nod.gif

any more suggestions say if budget it RM 1.7k?

please and thanks bro~ flex.gif

Well, you did mention that if worth to add a little bit more than just mention ma brows.gif
Prices are in RRP, can still bargain yo nod.gif

Anyway, for a lower budget, its just these:
Dell
[Ultrabook]Inspiron 14z, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000@RM1599[1.87kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), Ubuntu Linux 11.10, *no VGA port, OD

The processor is a little bit weak though I would say hmm.gif

QUOTE(Becky Ning @ Sep 24 2012, 11:35 AM)
Hmm I am a pharmacy student (if that info even helps) Is an ultrabook sufficient for a student or should I get a performance laptop? I am also looking at laptops that are relatively fast..

The M840 sold in Harvey is i5 (they are selling i5 and i7 apparently) The price for M840 (i5) is about the same as HP 1035TU (i3)..so which laptop should I get? i5 or i3?  rclxub.gif
*
Pharmacy students that work on protein folding stuffs may need a powerful laptop as well... but I guess for most a normal ultrabook would do hmm.gif
Having a faster CPU doesn't mean your laptop will be fast since the speed is bottlenecked by the HDD...

And I doubt the M840 (i5, if there is one) is similarly priced as the HP 1035TU laugh.gif
Are you sure its an M840 and not L840? hmm.gif

Anyway, my recommendations remain the same as previously stated.
If you really want a HP laptop, then perhaps you can consider these:
14"
performance:
HP Pavilion Dm4-3105TX, i5-3210M + AMD HD7570M@RM2699[Beats], 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm), backlit keyboard

ultrabook:
HP [Ultrabook] Envy4-1043TX/1053TX, i5-3317U + AMD HD7670M + [32GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm)]@RM2599[Beats][1.75kg], 4GB, W7HP

hai sifus.there are somethings playing in my mind.
how does y480 i7 3630qm look?is it brushed metal or the one with orange line??
and i saw on lenovo site,z480 specs said it comes with gt630.but in the picture, also in lenovo site said it comes with gt640.which one is it?
*
The Y480 is an extremely hot laptop lol, there are plenty of pictures in this forum yo, just look for it nod.gif
If still cannot find, then ask "devour", he often takes photo of new laptops

The GT630M is the older variant, the new Z480 comes with GT640M (more expensive, of course) nod.gif

the price for m840 is about RM2000. cheaper than the HP 1035..

Alright. Thanks for your recommendations!

I think you got the wrong information...
I don't think there is an M840 at RM2000...
You must be referring to the L840 which costs around RM2000... please be careful and research properly to avoid being conned

Btw, may I know what is GPU? lol..sorry I'm such a Noob at this.

GPU = graphic processing unit, or in other words, graphic card nod.gif
You'll need it for gaming and 3D rendering. Photoshop uses it abit as well

HI TS,

i'm considering Asus K46M, just wonder is this the new model and how long it had been in the local market?
and do u have any recommended shop for Asus retailer? Or just get it from Harvey Norman or Seng Heng?
I dun think there are any offcial Asus direct retail stores right? all of them are thru distributor?
Another question is how many yrs of warranty carry by Asus and issit International or local warranty?

Thank You and really apprecaite ur hard work especially on the pricing thread, really do help folks around in making decision...keep up the good work rclxms.gif rclxms.gif
*
Hihi laugh.gif
Yeah, the K46 is so new that we are still quite confused about the naming of the models:
14"
[Ultrabook]K46CM-WX090V, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT635M@RM2099[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, 4-cell battery, W7HP, OD
[Ultrabook]S46CM-WX023V, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT635M + 24GB mSATA + 500GB HDD@RM2599[2kg], 4GB, W7HP

Its probably just out for less than a month I would say...
Any large shop will do, as long as they sell you a completed sealed (new) unit

Almost all Asus notebooks come with 2 years international warranty, this one included brows.gif

Thanks haha, I used to ask for the sifus here for help with laptop recommendations, now just paying back laugh.gif

thanks for recommend...
laptop i plan to use more than 2 year..
actually which brand quality is better??
i heard that asus quality good but the after sales services like sucks.
the acer quality like no so good, and services also so so ...
how about the lenova services? and did you know the price for y480?
if for you choose, acer v3, asus a45vm (rm2099), dell inspiron 14R and lenova z480 and lenova y480( if around 2.4k).
*
Both Dell and Lenovo offers on-site warranty support of up to 3 years nod.gif Try to go for those (at a price, of course) for peace of mind nod.gif

Yeah, apparent Asus's warranty support is not doing too well at the moment...

For the Lenovo Y480, the RRP is:
Y480(5934-7549), i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT650M (GDDR5) @RM2599 [JBL], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), backlit keyboard, freeDOS, 2 yrs warranty, P950 headset
Y480(5934-1372), i7-3610QM + Nvidia GT650(GDDR5)@RM2699[JBL], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), backlit keyboard, W7HB, 2 years international warranty
You should be able to get around RM2380 for the FreeDOS version...

Well, if warranty coverage and support is important to you, then the 14R SE and Z480 would be good, using the rest of the money on warranty upgrade.
If specs are more important to you, then the Y480 brows.gif

thx for ur prompt reply tongue.gif
The only diff is the 24GB SSD with the S46CM for prompt startup..which i but i dun think i do need it..
hmm..from ur experience issit wiser to get it from HN or any computer shop in LY? interms of discount and gift bundle? brows.gif
*
You are right, the price difference just because of the different in 24GB mSATA is not worth it (unless there are other spec differences that I've missed out laugh.gif)
You might wanna save and upgrade to an SSD later on..
As for prices, it all depends on how good you bargain, its hard to say which shop will offer the cheapest price nod.gif

My advice is, try to opt for price discounts rather than free gifts, as most of the time the gifts are cheapo stuffs that doesn't last very long sad.gif

y480 like over my budget.
from you recommend i will choose out if this 3.. but still confusing, which to choose@.@!!
i jz hope the laptop won't have any problem, give me play some games, study use purpose, write some report.

if purchases at low yat for the acer, and asus they will free help me upgrade to 6gb rams. did you know lenovo has this offer???
if compare this 3 brand, lenovo is better?
sorry if too annoying for u ><!!!
*
Yes, the Z480 comes with 2 years warranty. It has 2x USB3.0, and 2x USB2.0 .
Whether a laptop lasts or not depends on a little bit of luck, and on how good you take care of your laptop nod.gif
Personally I would go for the 14R SE because of the stronger GPU (same as Z480's) and the faster 7,200rpm HDD. But since you are not interested in that one, then the Z480 is the one to go for since you are in to gaming nod.gif
You'll find the keyboard a lot to like on Lenovo units laugh.gif

Well, the most important thing is to go for the laptop that you like the most nod.gif

As for promotions, it all depends on how you bargain with the shop people. Different shop will have different offers.
Some will be a lot better than the RAM upgrade you've mentioned brows.gif

Sorry but I do not know the details, I've tried to ask Lenovo Malaysia (FB) before and they just send me into their website which doesn't say much as well... the only way to know is to give them a call, or ask Lenovo dealers directly nod.gif

Yeah, extremely big difference laugh.gif
I've switched from a 750GB (7,200rpm) HDD to an SSD haha
An 256GB SSD should be around RM700-800 I guess? I'm not very familiar with SSDs though, perhaps you can get better feedbacks from the SSD thread under Hardware nod.gif

Yeah, you should be able to replace the optical drive with an SSD/HDD as well
