i was traveling around the tokyo city and i even drink inside subway train once lol, i think someone stare at me for a while, but another young japanese guy hop in with a dripping wet cup due to the iced coke inside, worse than my bottled drink with cap that i close after every single sip. being rude if drink water when walking? nobody cared every time i did that, but i made sure i close the cap when i stop drinking. now you mentioned it, i never see any japanese drink while walking, but doesn't mean you can't drink when you walk along the street! just stand aside and drink.

for asking direction, my friend doesn't even speak a single japanese word and yet people there are so willing to give him directions. i've even heard some bring you there in person even if it's opposite to where they're heading to. so far i planned my trip pretty well and i use GPS so it was pretty smooth to navigate around.
i don't think japanese are impatient, just that they're very fast paced and our speed is slow to them. also must consider that you have to speed things up when there's a long queue. japanese are very well mannered and they'll queue up even the queue is long and like an hour or more to wait, usually waiting for a nice meal. so people will not linger, eat, finish, leave. i like this culture very much as people are more considerate. in fact, all the hotspots i went to, people will not linger at one place for long time when it's crowded, it was very pleasant to take nice photos there as people act fast, and likewise, i act fast too to let other people take pictures etc. in malaysia? hehehe, very common to see people taking their own sweet time taking up some spots and simply don't want to leave even seeing people also want to use that spot to take pictures, or see the view, etc...
generally, i think tokyo center (chuo-ku) people are much more fast paced. i went to kichijoji which is 30mins from tokyo center, for their stunning sakura view at inokashira park, people there are slightly slower paced and more friendly and "colorful". love this place very much!
