I got this discount when I bought lens in Akihabara -- basement 2nd-hand shop. Nice salesguy filled up form for me, attached something to my departure card in passport, removed at airport when leaving.

http://world.tax-rates.org/japan/sales-tax

Some shops have straightforward rules that says if you spend until XX amount, show your passport and you will get tax waived, but most shops don't do that.

There are some duty free shops and also shops that give tax waiver if you use certain credit cards, but we (or most people I guess?) did not goto specific tax refund stations to claim back. blush.gif

yup sometimes forgot to claim like my previous korea trip sigh.. so now faster ask about japan 1st.. thank you so much for your info =)

when i was there early this year err didnt see any roadside stall.. they have many shop which use machine to buy the food, like in malaysia our vending machine for drinks, but theirs for food.. most of them in japanese.. but have picture... if u choose noodles they will ask u udon/soba and hot/cold.. and all shops there self service... .. price range from 3xx yen - 1.5k yen for this type of vending machine shop.. i found it very nice and interesting.. =) 500 yen can get a meal average from vending machine, sometimes they have promotion.. they will put it out
