Actually, I don't understand how can a 日 be 終らない, though they are technically correct. I thought it should better expressed as すぎていく？

Once again, I think you used direct translation. Sounds better if use きぼうにあふれる　or きぼうがおいてある…。

I think when the writer wrote hiroimashita he/she actually meant the verb hirou which means to pick up.

So i think the writer meant i picked up a kitten today.
