Seems like there are a lot of space 4X games (Sins of Solar Empire: Rebellion, Endless Space and Legend of Pegasus) on Steam's top 20. Can we say that this is the sign of resurgence of space games since all of them are selling like hotcakes? Not to forget Civ V is on the list too. I never expect to see Sins of Solar Empire: Rebellion to be on top 10, at time of writing, after almost a month after release. Rebellion is a good game, regardless, already put 50 hours in the game since beta.

*hint* THQ, please make Homeworld 3 and Freespace 3. *hint*

Maybe i should ter-click Endless Space instead.

I just started playing it so here are just some of my thoughts. I’ve only played 2 games on NORMAL difficulty as the Amoeba and United Empire so I might be wrong about certain aspects.

Like:
UI & overall presentation – Pretty and very easy to get into. Almost everything has a tooltip and a lot of info can be obtained at a glance. Though certain aspects such as wormholes actually requiring research before you could just jump through them could have been explained better

Hero system – They’re useful for developing ur systems, increasing research or boosting ur overall fleet performance. Plus they level up and can acquire new abilities/stats

Planetary exploitations- Helps to modify the overall output of the planet, be it research, dust, food or industry

System improvements – An improvement that applies across all the planets in a system. It’s simple and frees u up from a lot of micromanagement.

Terraforming – Pretty neat if u need more lava planets for increased industrial output, arctic planets for research and terran for population. Offers quite a bit of flexibility in shaping ur systems to ur needs

Dislike
Ship design & combat– Somewhat simple. Doesn’t consider the position and placement of weapons like SotS. The card base system is pretty alright. What I don’t like is how the game fails to explain or indicate properly why I lost or won the previous battle when I’m playing it manually. Since I’ve never like space combat in 4X games this isn’t much of an issue to me. I tend to auto resolve more.

Neutral
Music – I like the overall music style, reminds me of Brian McCreary’s work on Battlestar Galactica. Though some of the tracks aren’t very memorable.

Diplomacy – I’ve heard complaints about the AI but so far in my 2 games the AI’s been pretty decent. Nothing much to complain about YET. Definitely a lot better than
the schizophrenic AI in Civ 5.

Research tree – Pretty standard fair I suppose

Overall
I find myself liking this game, though I havent had much experience with other 4X games such as MoO2 to make a fair comparison. I've played SotS before and while SotS definitely triumphs in the combat and ship design, I find the overall empire management lacking. Endless space seems to be on the opposite spectrum, with better empire management but poor combat. In the end it's up to you but I do recommend it though.
*
I never played MOO2 or any older 4X games. Just that i am interested in getting into these type of games as i am getting bored with a lot of the mainstream games.

I'll consider ES, as it does looks good, but the combat does let it down a lot. SotS and Sins does combat very well, but the empire management is fairly terrible.

oh since everyone is going about steam summer sales, is FM12 worth buying or should i wait for FM13 ?

Tempted to get it, cause this game has very good skirmish AI which is good for comp stomps.

Gameplay wise, it is also fairly competent too.

Hmm, there seem to be no mid week sale this week?

Is this the sign of Steam Summer Sale as we can rest our wallets for a couple of days?

EDIT: Mid week deal is up, its Dungeon Defender.

My wallet is safe. biggrin.gif

Cannot finish one, still got:

- Sleeping Dogs
- Wargame: Europe Escalation
- Endless SPace
- Legend of Pergasus
- Hitman Absolution
- Dishonored
- Alan Wake American Nightmare
- Far Cry 3
- Dungeon Siege 2
- Titan Quest
- Freespace 2
- Ground Control 2
- Anon 2070
- Company of Heroes 2

Fuuuuuu, my wallet. At least 2 down this week. The list will only keep adding.

Now, i am removing Alan Wake from my backlog. It is quite good, i would say. Then, i will finish both Batman Arkham games to prepare my body for Christopher Nolan's final movie of Batman trilogy. It is gonna be a Batman week or so.

excellent idea.  and that 2 games are awesome altho i do like Asylum more than City. and I am certain to get 2 platinum ticket to watch that movie, been waiting for way too long.
*
Already booked my tickets for one of the world's biggest IMAX screen. Damn expensive, though, the ticket, it cost more than a copy of Torchlight 2. brows.gif

It alright, though, as i watched The Dark Knight on IMAX, the scene in Hong Kong where Batman was standing on a tower and trying infiltrate Mr Lau's office, that scene alone made the whole IMAX experience well worth the money spent. The scene is absolutely epic.

LOL, the main thing is still the movie man. IMAX just enhance it but if the script sucks, it will still be zero.

Hopefully TDKR wont end up as shitty as ME3's "epic" conclusion. They fixed it now, but it did took them very long to implement the better ending.

QUOTE(ik3da @ Jul 11 2012, 12:18 PM)
I will hold on Endless Space first. Combat and in-game info seems a bit lacking from reviews/vids, might consider to get Rebellion instead. With the number of recent space-genre 4X, I think I have the luxury of waiting till reviews/YTube vids are out for Legend of Pegasus. Where are you getting Freespace 2 from? Didn't know Steam has it?
*
Well, i have Rebellion now where i find it a little bit disappointing for someone coming in from Diplomancy. It didnt add much on the surface, but the changes they made to Sins is massive. A lot of things works very differently now, even just comparing a Rebel and Loyalist of a race. It's just the thought of not enough "obvious" features added makes me feel a little disappointed.

The game is very good, especially you are a fan of Sins of Solar Empire or you like 4X games with a little twist. It could be quite lacking in terms of depth, in comparison to other 4X games, but the real time gameplay made up for it. AI is actually quite competent now. Sins is more to combat than empire management, while Endless Space is interesting because it is more to empire management than combat.

Both are very different games, IMO.

About Legend of Pegasus, i dont think i'll put much hope in it. Felt that the devs are taking too much than they can chew as adding a 40 hours campaign might compromised the gameplay. I have read that the devs dont want to do a beta for the game too, despite both Sins and ES had an extensive Beta. The game sounds like another SotS though.

You can buy Freespace 2 from GoG.com. For like 6USD.

Because playing pirated version will not give you a representative view on the game.

It could be old version or it could be broken due to cracks.

For the video one, you can reuse the one you use for last year. Just remove from your account and attach it to steam again.

You dont not have to upload a new one on youtube.
