The original Dremel is far more durable than the RTX and maybe also the Ultimax. For some reason, the RTX cannot be used for over 15minutes under heavy load or else it might blow(overheats very fast). The Dremel however isnt as hot as the RTX.
Both are equally good(some versions of the Dremel have limited speed control compared to the RTX)

I've not tried other brands though, but if you're into alot of modding. I suggest the original Dremel.

I have both the Black & Decker RTX and also the Dremel 395, and also used the Abletools before.

Among all i'd choose the Dremel 395 solely because of its reliability. It doesnt heat up as fast as the others and that means it would last longer.

My RTX blew up two times already coz of overheating. It just overheats too fast. But one thing with the RTX is its torque. Its the the best among the three. at low speeds, this thing hardly bogs down under load. Even the dremel lacks the massive amount of torque this thing has.

Lastly, the abletools is a good enough tool if u are really low on cash and just wanna do a little modding. torque and power wise looses out on the other two. rest it well and dont overheat it and it should serve you well.

I've used few brands including B&D RTX, Ultimax, Pro's Kit & Pegasus.

And as MetalZone mentioned, the RTX heats up too fast but the torque is superb.

For those on really tight budget could consider either ABLE TOOL or Ultimax.

But if planning to use for long term, then better get Pro's Kit or Dremel lor. smile.gif

Mebe more forumers could share their xperience.

this question has been asked countless times. check this thread for your answer: http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=172444&st=0

that extension tool is called a Flex Shaft. I have the B&D Flex Shaft. Dremel also has their own. They are all interchangeable and can be fixed on all three that i tried (B&D RTX, Dremel, Abletools).

has been a very long time since i visited the case modding thread. sweat.gif

hehe... not bad ah, quite a few people using Abletools since I first post up the picture a long time ago tongue.gif

Anyway, abletools is sufficient for normal modders who only once a while decide to cut up their case. smile.gif

btw, haven't use my abletool for a long time cause I have not that much time to mod and also its spoiled. Got a question for you guys, the tool got stuck between the metal i was cutting and mechanism got jammed. Now it can still rotate cannot go to a high rpm and its current speed can't cut anything. Any idea how to fix it? My thought is that its the carbon brush but I'm not too sure.

Problems do arise only if the tools are not handled properly, most of the time.

If already faulty, then just go change it (if got warranty). wink.gif

yes of coz jigsaw can cut hole also. but it all depends on what you wanna do. sometimes the dremel does a better job especially with precision and complicated designs.

Yups, both has own advantages. Dis applies to most tools. If not it wont me manufactured in the 1st place rite ż wink.gif

Dis rotary tools 'll be needed specially whn cutting nearby areas. Another thing is jigsaw 'll produce a lot of vibration; so if gonna cut thin arcrylic, it may break/crack.

Evry tool has it's own special use. Rotary tools' kits & accessories are nvr meant to be used w/ power drill. And in some cases u might injure urself (severely) by misusing power tools.

Besides safety issue, the cut-off wheels are quite fragile (specially the standard types). So gotta be careful when cutting process.

In conclusion, the best is u ppl get a cheapest rotary tool & xperience evrythin' urself. tongue.gif

Ok...here's my little review for you guys. lets start off with some nice pictures.

(click thumbnail for larger picture)

user posted image
the box

user posted image
the rotary tool

user posted image
accessories that came with the box

user posted image
the dremel ready to rock

here is what included in the box:

1 rotary tool with ac-dc adapter
1 cutting wheels
4 piece of grindstones
5 drill bits (inside the small tube)
5 pirce of brass collets (used to hold the different size bits)

this kit is totally above my expectations. i didnt expect that the kit will come with any accessories at all. the tool feels like cheap plastic when i hold it the first time (but hey, you cant comment on that for the price you pay icon_rolleyes.gif ). so i assamble the cutting wheels for a test run. being a first time dremel user, i was lost since there's no manual that came with this kit doh.gif (i'm a dremel noob) after a few minutes, manage to assamble everything and i try to cut some sheet metal that i have. hey presto!!!....this cheap plastic does work.... rclxms.gif so to cut it short, i list down here the pros and cons of this kit.

Pros: rclxm9.gif
~ comes with a lot of accessories for you to get started.
~ its cheap thus affordable...good for first timer to practice.
~ have a button to hold the dremel head in place when you want to attach the bits.
~ did i mention that it works!!!!

Cons: rclxub.gif
~ no manual.
~ no speed control.
~ come with only one cutting wheels
~ feels like cheap plastic.

overall... i recomend this product to those who are first time user. since it is cheap, you can buy this tool and practice before moving to RTX or the real Dremel. the accessories that came with the kit should get you started with a few case mods and maybe some side panel too.....hehehe laugh.gif

ok thanks for reading cool.gif

Hehe...1st of all nice~ 2 hear dat it arrived safely. 2nd, happy that u r njoyin' it rclxms.gif

Bout the drill bits, there should be 5 pcs total. The other 2 are vry fine, so guess I x nmpk tongue.gif (FYI, they're HSS bits...so can use drill on metals too)

1 thing I myself don like bout this Ultimax is that there's no manual. cry.gif

All items (specially power tools) should act incl a manual. However Pro's Kit do include rclxm9.gif

And yups, I too personally recommend this Ultimax brand for starters or those who'll just use once/twice thumbup.gif

Aiyaaaaaaa. For a electronics mod guy the speed controller is very simple oni. It's just a rheostat. I got so many high current mechanical speed controls in my Tamiya section of the storeroom. kekekekek.
Actually that wud b a really good "How to" mod for the benefit of the others here who wanna mod the cheap rotary tools. Shah? U wanna do us all a favor? rclxms.gif rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

actually there's an easier way to mod this dremel without voiding your warranty. the adaptor spec for this dremell is 12v @ 0.8A. so go buy a multi-voltage adapter with at least 1A and stick that to the dremel. now choose different voltage for different speed...12V, 9V, 7V etc. just dont try any higher than 12V....the motor might burn-out. smile.gif

note: becareful with those cheap adaptor because the voltage output is usually way off. recheck with a multimeter to be sure. u might be feeding 15V when you set 12V at the adaptor sweat.gif

excellent idea! thumbup.gif
with the ultimax plugged in at 12v@0.8A....how fast u think it is? 15000rpm? Well, since the B&D RTX is at 2A and max 30000rpm.

Will the the lower power do any damage to the tool?

dont have any idea how fast the ultimax is spinning. but the motors that run at lower voltage will sometimes tend to consume more current than at its rated voltage. so thats why i suggest an adaptor with at least 1A or else you might burn the adaptor.

no harm will be done. its like undervolting your case fan.

In conclusion, the best is u ppl get a cheapest rotary tool & xperience evrythin' urself.  tongue.gif

The Pro's Kit rotary tool that I bought from you last year still kicking strong and vibration free even it's already consumes more than 70Pcs of black&decker cutting wheels. A kick ass product from you thumbup.gif

Haha...so happy 2 hear dat dude. It's Pro's Kit after all, highly reliable brand for various tools. Wht I love bout it is really no vibration; which in turn make smoother cuttings. So less grinding work later biggrin.gif

If he's referring to Standard Cut-Off Discs, then I'm not shocked that he used so many since to just cut a single side panel 'll consume more than 6 pcs (depending on speed)
