Holla LYNers bookworms!

Referring to the topic title, am currently working on assignment regarding books made into movies like Harry Potter, The Avengers, The Three Musketeers etc.

Just would like to know from some of you here, whether books made into movies either encouraging or discouraging reading, and why?

Like they say, any publicity is good publicity. It definitely encourages reading. It lets the general public out there aware of the book the movie was based on. Even if the movie was bad, anyone with an open mind wouldn't let it affect their impression of the book. For example I liked the idea of the movie John Carter so I read the books after watching the movie everyone agreed was bad but I fell in love with the series.

PS: Three Musketeers is a FANTASTIC book but the movie is an absolutely horrible adaption

Just look at what happened to The Hunger Games.
After a movie is out in theaters, the books are selling faster.
So I would say it's encourages reading.

it encourages.

those novels which have been made into movies often hit the bestselling list before and after the movie is out smile.gif

we all know that most of the movies will not be as good as the novels. so we will definitely read the novel to get the actual story/feel/plot etc.

definitely encouraging....

look at LOTR and Harry Potter....

i read Harry Potter since my secondary school, and yet it got famous only after the movie is out.. same with LOTR books i guess (at least in malaysia)

having said that, just to add on, i do believe that books is usually better than movies...with a few exception being LOTR and the kite runner...

Books adapted into movie encourages people to be interested in the series and to pick it up.

BUT

It does not necessary means the buyer are reading it.

I have seen people buying The Game Of Thrones because of the movie and looking for a cover that have Eddard Stark on it coz it looks cool.

And yet I am pretty sure the fellow wont finish the book. Lo and behold, on a separate case I have been able to buy 2nd hand full set of A Song of Ice and Fire boxset because the previous owner bought it on impulse and have no time to read it. Upon further proding, the buyer poked at the first book, n flipped the last book around.

The rest are left alone.

That said, books into movie increases sales but it does not necessarily means increase reading.

You're right. Some people bought books for the sake of buying. Or to make themselves look "cool".

Generally movie helps promote the book. if the movie is good, sure it will encourage people to read the book (my case - Girl with the dragon tattoo, TLOTR...) usually the storyline will be a bit different and in most case, books are much better than the movie...

However, if the movie is badly made or just plain boring, people might lost interest or just tends to stay away from it when they saw it in the bookshop (my case - countless)

It definitely encourages reading. I know a lot of people who started reading books after it's movie adaptation is released.

Definitely encourages reading. Whether the movies/tv shows actually do justice to the books is another matter.

Book purists will tell you that as long as the movies are made after the book series are fully published its fine.

Ever wondered what Harry Potter would have been like if Rowling's writings didn't have to take into account an aging Daniel Radcliffe?
