look at LOTR and Harry Potter....

i read Harry Potter since my secondary school, and yet it got famous only after the movie is out.. same with LOTR books i guess (at least in malaysia)

having said that, just to add on, i do believe that books is usually better than movies...with a few exception being LOTR and the kite runner...
