After Ego Draconis, Larian goes back to the root of the Divine Divinity series and make a top down RPG with turn based combat.

The story of the game happens before the first Divine Divinity game.

The game puts heavy emphasis on cooperation between players in multiplayer, setting and interacting with the environment to your advantage.

Edit: Like Magicka, rain makes you wet, if you got hit with electricity while you are wet or standing in water, you are in for a world of pain. On the other hand, fire do a less damage to you when you are wet.

An interview with Larian Studio about 2 of their upcoming game, Divinity: Dragon Commander and Divinity: Original Sin.

Both games look interesting.

11 hours more to go before the Kickstarter ends.

The game already raised $845,383 at this point and unlocked the $800,000 achievement that allows henchman to become companion with full back story.

Also an article from Kotaku on why you should pledge.

QUOTE
Ten Reasons Why Divinity: Original Sin Deserves My Money

Within the first five minutes of my play session with the alpha version of Divinity: Original Sin, I killed Larian Studios' Swen Vincke. "So I see you are readying a fireball spell," he said, and I shot him. I'm counting that as the first of ten reasons why the Kickstarter prequel to the Divine Divinity role-playing game series deserves my cash —being able to set fire to the founder and CEO of the studio making the game. Everyone mark that down.
It's not about the action, as pleasing as it was, as much as it is the freedom to perform that action. This is a cooperative multiplayer role-playing game where the 'cooperative' bits aren't mandatory. Like the pen-and-paper RPGs that spawned the genre, I don't have to either love or hate my party — should they need a reminder of my power, I'm free to give it.

Divinity: Original Sin, which Larian is calling its "dream RPG," does not need my money. Today is the last day of the PC game's $400,000 Kickstarter campaign, successfully funded back on April 9. The project's met all stretch goals but one, and at this rate it might even hit the million dollar mark before it ends. It's going to happen.
The question here is whether or not I should attempt to scrounge up enough change to jump on the bandwagon before the time is up. I've come up with ten compelling reasons, beginning with...

1. Killing Swen Vincke with a Fireball
He's a nice guy, but a bit too trusting.

2. Divine Divinity of Divining Divinations
2002's PC role-playing game Divine Divinity brought me hours upon hours of laughter and joy. Once I stopped making fun of the name and actually played the game — well, that was pretty damn entertaining too. It was Diablo, only with branching dialogue trees and non-combat skills. So really, almost better than Diablo.

3. It's Free-Roaming. It's Also Turn-Based.
The world is your oyster in Divinity: Original Sin, unless the oyster is aggressive, in which case your world becomes a turn-based battle that you'll probably die in, because oysters are bastards. The game allows players to roam freely about the land, chatting with NPCs, stumbling upon quests, and harvesting items to use in the ridiculously extensive crafting system. When you come across a battle, however, the action goes turn-based. Portraits appear on the side of the screen depicting turn order. Position and sound tactics are incredibly important, as is knowing when to run away and leave your fellow player stuck in battle.
That's right, though multiple players are playing at once, one can be in battle while the other is just wandering about. How does this work without tearing a gaping hole in the time-space continuum? Hush now.

4. I Can Wear A Bucket On My Head
How many times have you been in a role-playing game, looted a bucket, and just had it sit there in your inventory until you sell or drop it? That's not a problem in Divinity: Original Sin. Got a bucket? Put it on your head. Fishing rod? Wield it like an incredibly bad sword. Got a pumpkin and a knife? Carve that sucker up and make yourself a creepy Jack-o-Lantern helmet. There are regular weapons as well, but why use those while you can make your own?

5. I Can Officially Argue With My Party
Original Sin features the party-based dialog promised by games like Star Wars: The Old Republic, only so much more satisfying. Here's how it works. Sir Vincke of Fireball-Face and I wandered upon a clam (I guess it was a clam) trapped in a net, who promised to give us information in exchange for its freedom. After receiving its intel, I was given the choice to leave the creature trapped or free it. I wanted to leave it. Vincke wanted to free it. I attempted to use intimidation to get my way. He used his charms. I lost, but I vowed revenge. That's how a simple conversation can blossom into a full-out friend battle.

6. A Song Of Ice And Fire. Also Lightning.
Your friend casts an ice spell on a group of enemies. You cast a fire spell, melting the ice and leaving them standing in a puddle. Your friend casts a lightning spell, electrifying the water. These intriguing elemental interactions aren't limited to the player-created, either. Pools and barrels of oil might just be lying about, waiting for an irresponsible caster to come along and set them off. Hey, I'm an irresponsible caster!
7. NPCs Do Not Take Any Shit
If I were an NPC character in a role-playing game and an adventurer wandered up and started rifling through my things, I would call a guard. These NPCs will do just that. I also respect NPCs that violently defend their own honor should you suggest they might have been a little too vigilant in guarding the cottage of a bathing woman. But mostly I respect game developers that know damn well that I am going to cause as much chaos in their game as possible until I get it out of my system.
8. Level Editor Equals Endless Adventure
When Divinity: Original Sin ships this fall, it ships with the same level editor Larian used to craft the entire game. That's exciting. It brings to mind the amazing player community that grew around Atari's Neverwinter Nights. Anyone else here hang out at the Palace of Leather & Lace? Just me then?
9. This Man Is Doing The Music

Not only is Divinity series composer (and owner of the greatest website ever) Kirill Pokrovsky doing the music for Original Sin, one of the Kickstarter stretch goals armed him with an orchestra. He's a force of nature, and now he has an army.

10. Killing Swen Vincke
It really counts as two.
You can read more about Divinity: Original Sin at the official website and the Kickstarter page. I can guarantee you it'll be worth your money, but it's worth mine. Or it would be if I weren't broke. Man, glad I went through all that.
Also a video of real in game footage with the dev.

Preview events often involve around half an hour with a game, while carefully chaperoned through its corridors. I spent sixteen hours playing Divinity: Original Sin over two days in Belgium last week and nobody told me what I should or shouldn’t do. I spent two hours looking for a potato because I wanted to make some chips and Larian’s founder actively encouraged me in that mighty quest.

If I hadn’t had a flight to catch, I would have played for another sixteen hours over the next couple of days as well. There are more technically impressive fantasy RPGs coming out next year and there’s a great deal of work still to be done, but Larian’s latest is living up the early promise and is right near the top of my most wanted list.

There’s a sign on the wall in Larian’s studio, almost lost among the concept art (some cheesecake bikini armour is in evidence, but more on that later). It reads, and I’m paraphrasing both Larian and George Mallory here, “Why can the player move a flowerpot? Because it’s there.” To a small extent, those words summarise why Original Sin might well be the most interesting upcoming RPG for somebody like me – somebody who likes to push at the boundaries of a game’s systems, bending them until they crack.

Some of the time I spent with the game was productive, in a questing sort of sense, but I filled the majority of the hours with playful diversions, and one particularly absurd and drawn-out battle that took up most of an afternoon. I’ll talk more about that latter escapade and combat in general later on, but first let’s talk about flowerpots. By which I mean, I’m going to write about flowerpots and hopefully you’re not going to fall to sleep or start looking at pictures of cats instead of reading my wise words.

Like my love of CRPGs, Original Sin’s particular systemic design goes all the way back to Ultima VII. Farther still, actually, but that’s the most significant milestone. Before we even arrived at the studio, Larian founder Swen Vincke had politely admonished me for my claim, in this article, that Thief: The Dark Project was just ahead of Ultima VII as ‘most important thing ever’ in my personal gaming history. He also referred to me as a ‘relic’ because he doesn’t meet many games writers who have played Ultima VII.

In my new role as an admonished relic, which I play very well, I sat down to play. I’ve been hands-on with Original Sin before but this is the post-Kickstarter version of the game and I was keen to see how much content and interactivity months of extra work had allowed for. A massive amount, is the answer. It’s a large game but it’s the density of each area and interaction that delighted me. In all the time I played, I didn’t venture out of the first of four large areas and, yet, I could go back and play for another sixteen hours and find entirely different ways to progress. Or to not progress, I suppose.

Unexpectedly, the game begins by placing the players in the role of investigators. There’s a murder and a mystery to go along with it, and the first major quest involves discovering the perpetrator. There’s a spot of turn-based orc bashing beforehand, as the heroic duo of Source Hunters head into town, but it’s entirely possible to spend the first four or five hours playing detective. Conversations – mostly comical and well-written – contain clues and accusations, and the flow of the investigation subtly pushes the player into the sizable town’s several districts. It’s a clever way to introduce characters and the different ways of interacting with the world.

For example, to find a way into one suspect’s house, me and my partner found that we could pick the lock, teleport inside using arcane magicks, talk somebody into giving us the key, or murder the person carrying the key. Everyone in the game can be killed and Larian have ensured that every quest can be completed using alternate means if an essential NPC dies. Many of these backup solutions are intentionally obscure and/or challenging, but that they exist at all shows Larian’s strength of commitment to this particular brand of sandbox/open world.

It’s a simulated place, with basic but functional behaviours for all of its inhabitants. Even the creatures out in the wilds have been hand-placed rather than spawning randomly and it was during a test of the ways in which monsters interact with NPCs that I created a catastrophe. I just wanted to know if orcs would attack guards if a group were lured close enough to the town walls. I ended up with blood on my hands. And on my clothes and coagulating on the soles of my shoes where I’d stepped through the rivers of the stuff that had spilled from all of the dead people. The dead people that the orcs had killed.

I instigated a massacre.

Yes, it turns out, orcs absolutely will attack guards. They’ll attack citizens as well, and let’s not forget cows and, most heinous of all, other orcs. Of all the deaths that I caused during my silly experiment, the first stung the most.

Just outside the town, along a beach, there’s a single orc crying, mourning his brother who died in a large battle against a gang of humans. He doesn’t want to fight anymore, just to grieve in peace, and when he mentions that his brother was buried close by, along with some fancy equipment, there’s a sidequest to follow up on. That could be the end of the story. He’s just a big lonely blubbering survivor of war and he doesn’t need to be dealt with in any way whatsoever. I had no desire to desecrate his brother’s grave so I carried on down the road.

It wasn’t long before I ran into an altogether nastier group of orcs. They were level 8, on average, and counted shaman and a giant crossbow-wielding ******* among their number. Me and my companion were level 2. No area of the game is off-limits and creatures don’t level up when the player does, so it’s entirely possible to wander into trouble. This area was only a few screens from the town and yet we found ourselves outnumbered and outclassed. We should have just fled, using a combination of our magical teleporting triangles and good old-fashioned sprinting, but I had other ideas.

“Why don’t we lead them back to town? Let the guards kill them. We might get loads of experience if we join in the fight.” Later, as it turns out, I realised that the players only receive experience if they strike the killing blow. I suggested letting the guards whittle the orcs down and then killing orc and guard alike, but my partner wasn’t too pleased by that plan. I suppose one of us had to make sure the other behaved.

But the initial plan? It was a great idea. We agreed to lure the orcs, using most of our action points each turn to flee far enough that we couldn’t be struck, and then using our various powers to create hazards between ourselves and the enemy. Elements play an important role in combat, far more interesting than the WATER COUNTERS FIRE kind of system you’re probably imagining. That comes into play as well, but spells also change scenery.
user posted image
Rivers can be frozen, creating new paths. Rainstorms can be summoned to soak enemies, making them more vulnerable to electric bolts and lightning strikes. A cloud of poisonous gas might explode if a fireball passes through it and even pools of blood, created as enemies and allies fall, will freeze and become slippery hazards. And it’s slippery-slidey ice that turned the first part of the battle into farce.

We intended to slow the orcs down, so we could ensure they didn’t catch us before we reached town, but we hadn’t reckoned on how clumsy they are. As soon as they reached the small pond that I’d frozen over, they slipped, fell on their backsides and remained stunned for a couple of turns. Then, when they stood, they’d take a step, slip, fall on their backsides and remain stunned for a couple of turns.

“We really need the Benny Hill music here.” My co-op partner said. I think she was prepared to abandon the plan, happy to flee while we had the chance, but I was determined.

Eventually, they crossed the ice and there, right in front of them, was their grieving fellow-orc. They slaughtered him. Maybe they were in a bad mood because of the humiliating experience they’d just endured, or maybe they didn’t tolerate tears from their own kind, but their assault was swift and sure.

Sod Benny Hill, I remember thinking, we need some sort of requiem mass. I’d really grown fond of the big eejit. With revenge and fury on my mind, I continued to lead the orcs to their doom at the town gates, using a teleport spell to drag a shaman ahead of us, farther down the road, so that we could pummel him a little for good measure as we travelled in our bizarre conga line.

Of course, as you already know, it all went horribly wrong. Turns out the guards aren’t quite ready to face a mob of orcs and we had to lead them through the town, massacring as they went, to the barracks, where the final surviving guard managed to kill the last of them. It was a bloody disaster and a member of Larian’s team, watching over our shoulders, whistled through his teeth: “Nobody has ever done that before.”

That’s the brilliance of the game though. It was a daft thing to do and it took ages, but it was memorable in a way that only that sort of deviance from the ‘correct’ path can be. Original Sin is a heavily scripted game, with thousands of lines of dialogue, hundreds of quests and characters, and carefully constructed tactical encounters – but everything is built on flexible systems, starting with those flowerpots, and that means almost anything is possible within the very broad rules of the world.

With enough strength, a character can drag items of furniture, or just about anything else. A bowl could be thrown into a room to set off a trap, or a rat could be chased in to much the same effect (a worse effect from the rat’s perspective). Both of these events rely on rules set within the game’s logic – the bowl has weight prescribing how far it can be thrown and the rat has been programmed to run away from people. If a character were trying to lift a wooden chest, they may be told they needed to upgrade their strength. Empty it of its contents and the weight will change accordingly, however, and the problem might be resolved.

Every item and character in the game has rules governing its behaviour and the player characters (solo is possible but the co-op allows drop-in play and adds a huge amount to interactions and combat alike – more on that here) can tease and twist those rules as much as they like. It’s an enormous challenge for Larian to make sure everything functions as it should and at the moment, balance is as busted as the scales of the justice system, and odd discrepancies crop up frequently.

There’s plenty of work to do and a lot of it is the mathematics that will calibrate difficulty levels, loot drops, combat frustrations and levelling. The content is all there though, as is the language by which that content is understood, and my concerns about clumsy interactions and occasional placeholder text are more than outweighed by the sheer pleasure of tinkering with such a vast and bonkers playground.

Within four hours of playing with a total stranger, we’d both named our characters and were bickering over every minor decision. And we were laughing while we bickered. As we pursued the murder mystery, I declared that the game was fantasy noir, and that we were the squabbling heads of the land’s foremost detective agency. At the time, I was wearing a pumpkin on my head and wielding a scythe, and she was wearing a bucket and carrying the biggest staff I’ve ever seen.

Both of the characters, one male one female, can wear just about any combination of items. A stylish bucket or cooking pot can be combined with a full set of armour or a natty set of underwear. Although there’s (currently) no physical customisation of the body itself, there’s a Saints Row feel to the goofiness of the dress-up, and it’s good to see the new cover art, with two sets of sensible armour, pinned up on the wall alongside the original, with its single exposed midriff.

Along with the enormous spreadsheets full of possible items to create (cooking, tailoring, smithing, fletching, herbalism, alchemy and much more) and the tactical anarchy of the combat system, Larian have also made a world that’s joyful and inclusive. It’s a silly world, more Python than Tolkien, and it caters for earnest nobles, noble warriors, arrogant villains, neurotic shopkeepers and total strangers.

On the second day, after the mishap with the town massacre, we acquired a skill that allowed us to speak to animals and, rather than trying to save the world or solve a crime, decided to help a shabby tomcat win the heart of the elegant feline he loved. He required our assistance and, adjusting our headwear, we agreed to take on the Quest of the Missing Collar.

“What are your names, kind humans?” I imagine he asked.

“Pumpkin and Bucket, private investigators,” we nodded as we darted off into the wilderness. It was the role we had chosen to play.

Also, the game comes with the editor, so expect mods and all sorts of things to come out very fast.

Nvm I bought it tongue.gif

I watched some gameplay. From what reddit says, it has stellar interaction with the environment. Reminds me of FF: Tactics and I loved that game.

Its good! Like really really good. There are so many possibilities in combat and even out of it.

I had a enchanter with telekenesis and I saw a chest I couldn't reach so I teleported it to me biggrin.gif

Then you can steal things by using one of your chars to distract a guy (and make him face away from your other char) then you grab everything laugh.gif

What you choose to do also impacts what traits you get. There was one quest where you decide if you wanna save this talking giant oyster or not. If you save him you get a diff bonus from if you decide to sell him for monis.

I got this from the kickstarter. It's not bad, but man, the walking speed/responsiveness of mouse clicks annoys me.

btw, when you guys get the pyramid, you can toss 1 next to the bed and use another one mid combat for 6ap to escape both characters immediately.

I haste my rogue and pick off difficult groups like this. Sneak in -> backstab backstab backstab kill teleport out.

Not even Divinity: Dragon Commander sold this well. I am fascinated about this game rise to fame. What's their secret to the success? How did they managed to exceed their Kickstarter's goal? Larian Studio, whilst not small is not exactly a big name studio either, and i'm sure the casual never heard of Divinity saga before. As someone who's trying to learn one or two thing about marketing, this Original Sin is an interesting subject.

They delivered their promise not to mention staying somewhat true on being a western rpg unlike coughdragonage2cough
A lot of content inside the game itself
The game doesn't hold your hand when going through a quuest ( not like wait a minute that card )

Combat is not the best but one of the many fun ones

It does everything developers are getting wrong these days.

No hand holding, back to the roots RPG. Its also difficult. None of this carebear hyper casual bullshit. I think the most important part about the game is that the developers don't assume you're stupid. Beyond the optional tutorial area (which was fantastically designed by the way), you're on your own.

If you make a truly good product, your customers will market the shit outta it for you.

Isn't that what I'm unintentionally doing right now?

I think what they did is focus on one group of gamers instead of the usual responds "we try to make the game available to everyone". I always dreaded that word when it comes to games.

They already mentioned before that their previous game like Divinity 2 got castrated to meet publishers demand to appeal to the mass and the casuals and the game got pushed out of the door before it is even ready.

Since they go self publish for this game, they can do what they always wanted for the game and not having to cater to shitty publisher demands.

By the way, the game is not actually complete. They cut out 2 companions so that the game can launch on time. Last I heard, they are going to patch them in.

Also, got question want to ask, spoiler alert.

When you kena hit by pierce and slash, you bleed..so then you leech back your own blood. Kinda roundabout way of thinking but its what it is.

I like Steam, have tons of games there but i prefer my collection to be client-less if possible. This is also because i share my Steam account with my brother. Either one of us has to log out if we are to play Steamwork titles at the same time.

Other than ruby or tormented soul are there other stuff that adds attribute/skill stats on armors/weapons?

Loving this game. Though i wish they have an undo system during combat. I sometimes accidentally click on the ground next to the target because of the enemy char idle animation.

I know I could just target the body, but some situation with barrels or elevated grounds are on the way, you could still hit using that tiny clear path to the enemy

Exactly, I'm thinking about the shipping costs. Good to support great companies once in a while. A bit lazy to register and once done so, will probably be too tempted... sweat.gif

Wonder whether we can save shipping costs if we buy 2~3... just saying... laugh.gif

I think on Steam the true profit come from sales tongue.gif.That is why i think the industry is targeting consoles.

Consoles gamer buy on Day 1 (full-priced games) and PC gamers buy when sales (dirt cheap) tongue.gif.

That is why PC will get games much later or probably none if consoles made enough money already smile.gif

It's true most console gamers buy it at day 1 but there are some who wait for sale as well.
PSN, Nintendo and Xbox also have sales, sometimes good sometimes ok la and sometimes just cheap.
Due to the game being able to resell it's not a big problem for console gamers to buy it at day 1.

Yeah that's the sole reason more and more developers are shifting towards console gaming and PC getting alot of ports. Well can't really deny that most PC gamers just are just pirates anyway even though they bought high end expensive rig but not going to spend a penny on games. Steam is only helping PC gaming to less piracy for cheaper games.

I wonder how much reselling of used PS/XB games? If you can buy a Day 1 PS games at RM160 and then resell it RM140 then should be not bad laugh.gif

Support good developers not *cough*Ubicrap*cough* that downgrade your game. It's cheap compared to AC4 that i purchased with Season Pass which around $70USD last time.

I missed it when it was up for preorder during the steam sales because i lack the funds. I got watch dogs from the indian origin store for rm7x++ and the one im selling is the code that came with my nvidia graphics card. after getting scammed by buying AC3 deluxe for $79 i am not touching any ubisoft game for full price anymore, in fact my AC4 is ahem ahem edition. Will still buy farcry 4 tho

Not to bash Ubisoft entirely, AC4 is really good which i think should be bought. Hopefully FC4 there's no downgrade again. As for Divinity, you can find some steam sellers, they can help you buy cheaper. Otherwise just wait for winter sales smile.gif

bought the game last friday and accumulated 20+ game hours as of today. my starter class is a knight and a ranger. after that, i recruited a witch and a rouge. was thinking to replace the rouge with a cleric maybe..

at first, my main problem is on how to get gold in order to buy the skill books etc. however, i just make nearly 10k from my session just now. just from stealing the paintings and gold kitchen utensils.

overall, this is a very good game and will continue playing it.

no grind. but this is game should be rather easy if you follow the right path to progress.

summon spider worth the 1 skill point in geomancer.

leadership ( currently best skill to have. boost everybody, best to have main char having it, usually main char got free leadership after build up righteousness, +1 from equipment, you can easily get 4 leadership at start. perma big buff on everybody except leader. )

heal is important ( having multiple char having water skill is easier start )

sneaking is also important ( steal all the picture on wall, you can be rich soon )

crafting if you want the best item ( enchant/enchance )

in game log is not that good, please refer to google always.

fire hit on poison ( explode and spread fire, and keep burning )

thunder hit on water surface ( chance to stun the whole surface )

Just sneak normally (press C). Make sure NPC's line of sight doesn't hit you. When you sneak, screen will turn gray and you can see NPC line of sight easily.

How to win all fights:

1. Have sneak 5
2. sneak and whack the fella. sneak before end of turn
3. repeat.

AI is so f***ing broken right now. If you sneak at the end of turn, they will have nobody in sight to aggro so they end their turns immediately, i.e: permanently your turn.

Yo dude who you are calling jerk there? I think you have some serious attitude problem there. No opinion is wrong. You can only agree or disagree with it. There's no such thing as fanboys? If you want people to take you seriously, you best reason with facts not opinions and insults.

Stop twisting and turning thing around. Read, analyse and know what is going around before you post.
Jerks are jerks. Calling one a fanboy and attacking someone for no reason when what he likes is Kotaku which is also my regular place to read some gaming articles. Know what you are talking about first before posting. I'm out. This might be a misunderstanding in the end or something but whatever. Have a good day.

Dude. Calling someone a jerk is not cool. 2nd, i think it's a misunderstanding. I thought he meant Polygon suxs because of fanboys as he mentioned it was toxic site. That is why i quoted him to not bother with fanboys if he was insulted by any of them. Even if i misread, there's no reason to insult anyone calling them jerk no?. 3rd, you mentioned no such thing as fanboys. That is not facts dude. Fanboys are everywhere. I've read alot of gaming sites like you and they were full with console fanboys that insult pc gamers or gamers that are not gaming on their platform. Also by your tone, you are clearly aggravated by GHBZDK and being offensive. You should chill as we are all gamers. You gain nothing fighting over the internet. Good day.

Thanks so much. The trailer is really good. I guess there's some kind of boycott from Diablo 3 RoS? If not, I think English should be possible, shipped throughout the world.

The game itself is damn amazing. It's really into the roots of the old rpg style of game.
You really can't go wrong getting it. Read a few pages back and you'll see most members here praising the game and enjoying it. Not quite sure about any boycott though.

You can also get the games on Gog.com which is DRM free if you prefer it. Larian Studios store physical copies sold out so can't recommend it. Digital is only the choice you have I think which is the cheapest unless you don't mind the high postage fee for physicals.

This game really deserves 9.5/10 which I agree with Polygon. I'm loving it quite a lot. Still playing myself haven't really play co-op with anyone else. Read somewhere about Larian update they really regret doing the physical boxes. I think it may cost them a great deal as they are not a publisher themselves. So future games from them expecting physical would be a bit grim though

only 2 games on gog has Russian pricing.
legally, they reserve the right to revoke the purchase tho.
but so far never seen it happen in my experience.
witcher: wild hunt is around that price too if you qualify for the additional discount by owning witcher 1 and 2. you can preorder it already biggrin.gif
if you dont use this trick, i think they have a same price policy and they will give you a coupon code. but i wasn't planning on buying anymore extra games biggrin.gif

just bought this game and played it over the weekend.

the game's turn-based wif AP as base and the ability...reminds me of fallout...i think this is what ppl would've expect fallout 3 should be. better, colourful graphic, smoother interface instead of a FPS-turn-based game...well, not that i complaining...fallout 3 still a good game coming from a person that played fallout 3 prior to fallout 1 and 2. tongue.gif

the crafting parts remind me of minecraft/terraria...guidance is there but i dun think it's what everyone expected. u wont know whether something can be mixed or not until u drop the hammer into the tomato and pop-up a window asking u how many tomato sauce u want...

btw...i'm still figuring out how to cook with the cooking pot...can someone guide me? thanks

after few hours into the game...i just managed to reach the crime scene and leveled up to lvl3. lots of talking and reading and sneaking around stealing photo frame as recommended by u all....

the sneaking animation is interestingly funny...and i regretted killing the drunken legionaires tongue.gif

To cook with the pot, you need an open camp fire, then you drag the pot over the camp fire to set it up.

Sadly you cannot remove it after cooking or I never found the way to do so.

yeah...sadly...discover this method last night thru google...

but someone did mentioned that it can be 'removed' if combine it to a campfire located somewhere outside the town...
not sure where it is though...

atm, i find the map not so user-friendly...there is no description where is where...

managed to spent abt an hour last night...was at the wizard room, saw a cooking pot and tried to take it since i saw nobody around...i took it and suddenly the cat spoke to me shocking.gif rclxub.gif

i was like wtf a bit.... doh.gif

next time, i'll sneak just to make sure i'm not being watch by anyone...

btw, is there day & night in this game? i wanna break-into someone house at night and take the pyramid lying openly on the floor..

You set your own marker using the map, that is the intention.

There is no day and night cycle in the game because Larian don't want it to be just a visual difference, they want to make the NPCs behave differently and even close their shop at night but the change is too big to be put into the game as they need to make housings available to all NPCs and make an activity schedule as well.

Through trading, pay them more money or give them freebies.

Through stats, high charisma.

Through actions, agree with them when you are having conversation, not available frequently.

protip to newbies who's struggling with the game:

- if you're broke, steal the paintings! LIKE EVERY SINGLE ONE YOU SEE. just sneak and take it when the owner is not looking at your way (they have a sight cone when you're sneaking). each paintings cost around 200-600 gold

- game only has 2 followers. get them early. Madora's (fighter) good for tanking and Jahan (air/water mage) is my master crafter.

- only leave the city once you've leveled up to at LEAST Level 4. any lower and the enemies are gonna wipe the floor with you.

- use the the pyramids extensively during combat! what i do is sneak my thief alone and and throw it behind enemy lines... then BAM i'm backstabbing your back b****!

- use the anvil & whetstone in the end of time hall to upgrade your equipment. i only discovered them when i was already level 5. d'oh! doh.gif

- click the scale (dacing) symbol during trade with merchant to top-up the gold to match the value. i also discovered this later in the game. before i kept sliding the gold amount like the dumbass doh.gif

- this is kinda cheating but u can save & reload your game before opening a chest. the loot is generated randomly. it's a pain in the ass but if you've been carrying crappy gear you might want to do this once in a while.

I leave town at lvl 3 with 3 person team and manage to make it through the hordes of zombies and skeletons.

The key is to use the environment to your advantage as to control the directions and numbers of enemies you are fighting at 1 time.

Also know the weakness of the enemy you are fighting, skeletons are generally weak against blunt weapons, zombies are usually weak against fire as they tend to leave patch of exploding poison gas when they got damaged, pay attentions to all the details, it might just save your life

I don't steal or pickpocket. I know what i'm missing out in this playthroughs. Next game probably i will go with Ranger and Thieving/Pickpocketting.

I don't really need to steal paintings at all to survive. Money is a problem early game though but that's by design smile.gif

yeah backstabs are awesome! they also only require 2 Action Point.

add that with the knockdown & the bully trait along with the rogue's initiative & mobility... rclxms.gif

the weird part about the game for me is when the two main characters are interacting with each other. like talking to my own self. the rock paper scissors thing is also kind of daft rclxub.gif

The characters interacting with each other was meant for co-op tongue.gif. There's a setting that you can choose where your NPC will follow what you like the respond to be. The rock paper scissor thing wasn't explained and there are alot of puzzles wasn't clearly hinting you what you should do too tongue.gif.

The rock paper scissor are based on the correct respond if not mistaken. For example if during a conversation, the "right" dialogue was to intimidate, you will get more points in each rock paper scissor. But if you choose wrong dialogue options which was reason you get less and the opponents get more points.

riiiight. i still think the whole thing's daft.. laugh.gif

it's fine if the dialogue just use a skill check against my charisma. i don't need a mini-game for that. biggrin.gif

gonna check that setting u mentioned next time i load it up.

*
actually the map does have description for places...u jus have to zoom in to a certain level and point to the golden diamond icon...

hmm...im not sure on the day/night complexity...as far as i can c games in NDS can do it...so... unsure.gif

if exceed weight carry limit then that character cannot run, as far as i can tell that's the only effect.

How does the journal time stamp works actually? I'm asking because my first playthrough my journal was at Day 2 and then I decided to restart the game, now my journal is log at the beginning as Day 3 instead of Day 1 on a new replay.

just finished the game and i realized i already spent more than 100 hours with the game... rclxub.gif

i wasn't too crazy about the story but voice-work & combat was FANTASTIC! thumbup.gif

Man At Arms skills are a bit OP methinks. With Bully, Battering Ram, Rage & Flurry my fighter & Madora made short work of the enemies. Jahan went full Fire+Water Mage. The other hero i went as rogue for the sneaking, lockpicking & backstabs (they're not as efficient against bosses though. plus the good daggers are hard to come by).

noticed that the random loot mechanism is open to abuse. kept reloading my game to get better loot. maybe for unique & legendary loot larian should make the drop permanent (eg only dropped by certain boss or ornate chest)

besides that larian should also make the money, keys.quest items pooled amongst party members so that i don't have to find which party member has the item.. sweat.gif

anways, Larian highly deserved the praise. an 8/10. biggrin.gif

inXile better step up their game with Wasteland 2. Obsidian's Pillars seems to be in good shape so i'm not that worried about that one smile.gif

Divinity: Original Sin "fantastic and rewarding" for Larian Studios, 'cleared debts'

QUOTE
Turn-based fantasy RPG Divinity: Original Sin has been out for a bit now, so has developer Larian Studios been driven penniless? No, says, studio founder Swen Vincke. It's flooding coffers with cash.

The studio boss has posted a blog sharing his 'what comes next' thoughts, and stating that Divinity has broken even, and they've done "sufficiently well" to look forward.

The RPG has sold "well over half a million" copies by now with most naturally occurring through Steam, with 10% from retail - that place with the bricks and mortar.

"Break even” has been reached, our debts have been paid and we are now in the profitable zone. While not all of the money is for us as we had private investors on board, the game did sufficiently well for us to envision funding our next endeavors with it, meaning we’re pretty happy about its performance," blogged Swen Vincke.

He adds: "So much for turn-based fantasy RPGs not selling, crowdfunding not working and a developer like us not being capable of bringing a game to market without the help of seasoned publishers." Oh, burn!

"Releasing D: OS has been a fantastic and rewarding experience, but it’s also been a very tough game to make. There were a surprising amount of hurdles we had to jump and negotiating them wasn’t always easy. I wish I could share my mailbox so you could appreciate some of the finer nuances of some the prose that was directed at yours truly, but alas, confidentiality obligations prevent me from doing so."

"The release of D: OS was one big crunch period with all the good and bad that come with it. If the game ultimately did well, it’s because of the outstanding performance of the team when “the going got tough and the tough got going”.

The ugly truth is also revealed by the founder, saying Divinity: Original Sin could have spent longer in the programming mines, but financial pressures meant they had to deliver or face oblivion.

"I think we would’ve continued development even longer, but when I had to dash to a far away place where lived the one last bank director who still wanted to give us sufficient credit to pay a part of what we owed to another bank, it was clear that we needed to finish," said Vincke. "I wasn’t joking when I said it was all in."

"When D:OS finally shipped, a lot of us were exhausted. Perhaps surprisingly, but typically, not all of us were happy that it was finished, as there were still a ton of things we wanted to do. Our bodies and our families had different feelings however. They were very happy that it was over and we needed to make quite some amends."

So what does lie ahead for Larian Studios?

"Our plan is to continue supporting D: OS for quite some time as this is the RPG framework on which we’ll build our next games. We’re fooling around with controller support to see if a big screen version with cooperative play would work well, something I’m silently hoping for as I think it’ll be a lot of fun, more so perhaps than playing coop in LAN with a friend sitting next to you," continued Vincke.

"We’re also improving the engine itself as well as adding a bunch of extra features that not only make D: OS more fun and more friendly to players, but that will also improve whatever our next offering will be. We’re also adding extra content, like for instance the big companion patch, voiced et al, and I imagine that won’t be the last of what we’ll add."

"The foreseeable future for Larian (i.e. the next couple of years) is going to see us making further progress in improving our RPG craft and creating dense game worlds with hopefully new and innovative gameplay systems based on old school values. These last months I’ve been very busy expanding our development force so that we can continue to compete in tomorrow’s market," he explained.

Larian Studios has released the first free content update for Original Sin, and it basically has two parts: there's the two companions DLC, which adds Bairdotr the bow-toting ranger and Wolgraff the dagger-wielding rogue to the game. Both have their own storylines, and, unfortunately, both can only be recruited in a new game.

Hmmm, it is much cheaper now since Steam change its currency to domestic currency.

In Indonesia, it is less than USD24.50 after rough conversion. Tempting to get this.
