It seems there's more "not keen on this specialty" than "keen on this specialty" at this stage...whether or not one can get into the preferred one is another ball game altogether. smile.gif
*
True. Looks like it's easier to get the preferred specialty at the bigger hospitals. But before that getting a MO place at a desired hospital is a priority but have to accept also if placed elsewhere.

Any idea how long the Tier 2 visa is valid for? Or rather, how long is the sponsorship from HEE? Just CT1 and CT2? Other Tier 2 visas are valid for 5 years and 14 months, subject to sponsorship.
*
Sorry, I was referring to the local scenario. As far as UK is concerned, I trust she will be able to decide what's best for her. I have not really look into the visa options but she will refer to me if she needs feedback. Whatever, I think I need to find out more.

yup, at my time.
direct entry fees were cheaper for pre clinical(even after converting!)
shows how much imu is charging for!
*
Queen's is one of them. But Glasgow fee is the same for all 5 years. At 42k pounds per year now is a bit crazy with our depreciating Ringgit.

some unis do preclinical clinical divide like queens as you said and mine.
yeah, one of my friend is studying in glasgow atm and its insane expensive.
*
My relative is there doing the final year. The locked-in fee 5 years ago was 28500 pounds per year and can cover 2 years at Queens.

What a relief to be able to write "final year"...for me anyway. LOL. Got your air tickets for July?
*
Not yet. Not sure how many days off I can take. And I am still looking at doing some traveling....not sure whether before or after. I would love to have 1 month to move around but I guess 2 weeks may be the max.

From reading The Student Room ,UK locals usually disclosed hospital attachment  and volunteering activities in their application. For Malaysians ,these are not so easy to obtain...are they important ?
*
I manage to get attachment at private hospitals for my relatives after their pre-u. Let's say over a 3 months period, you will be shadowing 3 different specialists. One of them who also worked earlier as a porter for about 2 months managed to learn quite a lot when one of the anesthetist teaches him in the surgery room and also got the chance to observe surgeries.

Its really not difficult if you submit in the request at least 6 months before the desired training dates.

procedures are not important....in any case, other than venesection, there isn't any other procedure students will be allowed to do....most places will not allow catheterisation even...

a lack of apprenticeship denotes a poor medical school....apprenticeship is the close observation of how senior doctors think, behave, interact, manage, communicate, mentor etc...and the close observation of how patients progress through the entire encounter with the health delivery team....

factual knowledge is NOT important...

because it is a given in good med schools with carefully selected students, that they WILL have acquired all the necessarily theoretical knowledge freely available in text books and online...because if that is even a problem, you have chosen the WRONG student...

hence in uk, many junior doctors will have already obtained their mrcp part 1 easily within the fy years...with some completing paces in pgy3....
*
Is it because its a UK based exam that UK graduates have a better success rates than overseas graduates?

Is it necessary to go for premium service in the application for a Tier 4 visa?

It is pretty expensive at 1,000 pounds. Relative was informed that if not premium service, passport can get lost.

Current visa should be valid till September/October, right? If I'm not mistaken, CAS will be given by HEE, after official results are issued by the unis. When will final results be available for your relative?
*
Is it necessary to have the "official results"? Apparently she has made an appointment to see them on
Friday. Relative is pretty independent and does a lot of things on her own and only ask when necessary esp $$$ laugh.gif laugh.gif

Understand that fyi is commencing end of July.

Will check with her on the need for premium service. 550 pounds can do a lot more shopping in London.

That's what I understood.
If she is already seeing them, then all good. Yes, F1 starting end of July, with a week of shadowing before "Black Wednesday" on 2 August. Is your relative sticking with the deanery at the same place? Or London?
*
Its one of the hospitals about 40 mins from where she is staying. Happy with what she got. Some got Aberdeen and Dundee which is quite a distance away.

Was told that nearly all the IMU scholars are also doing the fyi, though they will report to JPA first and and go back to UK. Will return if asked to by JPA, I doubt JPA will be interested in the current scenario. Unless JPA want to send them to East Malaysia. Was also told that rotations done in UK can be offset against period of housemanship. Not sure about this but I think at this time preference is for a longer contract period and not a shorter stint.

You are going end of June or early July?

I will be there end of June.

Good news for the JPA scholars! At least the training follows through as it should. Well they get 2 years for FY, then 3 years for CT, if they get jobs.  Mine got his first choice, so I guess he's happy. Will be there in July, graduation in mid July. Time sure flies, ringgit too! LOL
*
Time really flies. Last trip there was at the beginning of the 5 years. This time just squeezed 3 weeks in.

Good that all graduates got placement and not like couple of years ago where there was worry that there may not be enough places available.

There is still an excess this year but hopefully they can allocate them with no probs.
Awaiting the report from fpas.
*
Oh sorry, I thought no issue with placements. Didn't hear anything from relative. Podrunner relative and mine also got the preferred choice.

Yeah, just a question. Do these graduate doctors get any allowances on top of the designated salary? Like those in Malaysia, where allowances can amount to 60% of the basic salary.

Based on projections, all applicants will get a fy job this year....not sure if there was even a second round...

There will be loadings on top of base pay, for working out of hours....that used to add 50% on top....not sure how the new contract will have changed that....

P/s only 26 on the reserve list....compared to 500 in 2013....
*
500 can also be considered high but they still managed to place them in the second round.

But Oz seems to be having some issues with such placement now....never know what happen in 5 years time.

On a side note, accounting seems to be one of the best profession to be, whether in good or bad times. In just less than 2 years many esp in the auditing area are quitting due to stress related issues arising from a lot of new requirements and tight time line.

Never know what is down the road in the next 10 years....

There is 5 weeks annual leave, or more accurately, 25 working days....what I mentioned is over and above annual leaves....when your will have exceeded statutory working hours limits and need to stop work for a while...

It can stretch up to 2 weeks at times including weekends, and people have been known to go to Europe for holidays during such breaks....the problem is, rotas only get set few weeks in advance, so such trips tend to be impromptu....
*
Relative working hours will be morning till 9pm Monday to Friday and off over the weekends except that once every 3 or 4 weeks have to work over the weekend.

And after every 4 months will be given 2 weeks leave.

Each job is different, depending on the departments rotated through....those with mostly office hours will have lower banding but more civil hours....

Unlike Msia, each job in fy1 (you get to choose from a list) is fixed before hand.... although the exact rota will not be known till just before starting the rotation...

Sounds like relative starting with an easy office hr rotation...
*
She also got the rotation that she wanted for the first one and it was about 1.5 months ago. Seems happy about it. laugh.gif

the 2 weeks can be taken any time within the rotation. its just getting the approval from the rota manager.

sounds like an acute medicine/surgery admission rota. if he/she doesnt have nights, bless him/her lol.

Correct. Its acute medicine.

How did the appointment go? No need for accelerated visa application, right?
*
She went for the premium service and was approved on the same day. Now waiting for biometric resident card, which she need it as she is traveling to the US next week. Never ask her why she need the resident card to travel.

She chose the premium service as some other students and the group of IMU students also opt for the same service. Probably she thought it was safer rather than the odd one out. Not sure if it comes from their own pockets, they will do the same. hmm.gif

Yes will be back next week.
Can you ask relative if she had to produce any other documents apart from passport and CAS? What about proof that she has passed the course? Thanks.
*
Will check and let you know. A lot of things also acted on her own.

Recently told her to apply credit card but bank did not approve. Ask the advisor for reasons but said not sure why.

Maybe told bank that she has finished the course, that's why bank reluctant to give. Maybe with tier 4 visa and pay slip, then hopefully easier to get.

Was told that without credit card, cannot drive in US, even with valid international driving license. Anybody can help?
